The Woodsman appreciation thread

I just came back from this movie, and well, it's great. One of the top 10 films I saw this year, and Kevin Bacon really deserves an oscar nomination (which he didn't get). I can see why he didn't get it (the subject matter is not oscar material), but still, it's one of the best performances this year. If you think American movies are too much filled with saccharine or aren't serious enough, see this movie. It's a very well made character study, and it's tightly written, without any unexplored thread or useless meandering. Every actor in the movie does a great job.

Comments, agree, disagree?

I saw a preview for this when I went to see The Machinist (crazy psychological flick w/ Christian Bale).

And yeah, the Woodsman looked pretty creepy, and I usually love fucked up movies, but pedophiles?

It's not as fucked up as it looks, but it is a pretty hard movie. Yeah, it is the movie where Bacon plays a child molestor, although I'd have loved not knowing it going into the movie (you officially learn in about half an hour into the movie, even though there are LOTS of hints that you'll see differently now that you know Bacon is playing a pedophile). Really, the movie is not a "THIS IS FUCKED UP SHIT, NAKED CHILDS GETTING RAPED" movie, it's really subtle and personal.

And it is NOT a suspense, although there are some 'suspenseful' moments. It's a character study, a drama, nothing more, nothing less.

It opened here Friday and I'm planning on seeing it sometime this week. It's good to hear positive feedback for it.

It wasn't that good. Ended too soon, and didn't really explain much. A letdown for me.

Wow. If you needed more explanation, I don't know what they could have told you. What do you want to know, what kind of a man his father was, or what? This movie isn't typical Hollywood stuff where you're fed everything by the spoon. You gotta reflect on it. I've been thinking about it all day, and found some flaws to the movie, but really, it's an incredible character study, to me.

Oh, and Bacon does NOT show his penis. I expected him to, in a particular scene, but he DOESN'T! Shows you how serious he was about this part. Oh, by the way, it's his best performance ever.

Thank fucking god. After the last couple of Bacon movies I've watched where he flipped out his sausage, I was starting to get wary.
