A Chris Carter penned episode. So as per usual for him. It will get better, and there were some good bits here and there. Once Mulder gets back in the suit, all will be well.
Damn straight you shouldn't have bothered if you are gonna resort to pathetic retorts like that.
lol @ you claiming "dick waving contest" when you reply with the cliche "yep you're always right you're the king of the world" response. Especially amusing is how you say "Emilia Clarke is ahmazing" as if that somehow discredits Game of Thrones when in fact most GoT fans cite her as one of their major gripes with the show. Yeah, GASP.. GOT fans admit their show isn't perfect and criticize her acting as one of the flaws.
Face it. This episode sucked. X-Files, even if it may be in your opinion the greatest show ever, has never recieved the critical acclaim that many shows of the past decade have recieved.
And the show hasn't aged as gracefully as you wish to believe. Even the great season 3 still seems pretty cheesy.campy by today's standards.
I don't think you can classify three shows on one pay to view network as a golden age of television, no matter the quality. They were great, but they were more the progenitor to the current golden age which is across networks and delivery mediums.
The episode is at least true to the vibe of the original show. The music is there, the lonely feeling, often filming at night.
However it did come across as tacky in a few places, some of the visual effects and overall shots seemed corny. I know that was fine in 1993, but compared to shows today it looks dated. For example watching those soldiers walk around with their guns just looked so bad, it was overly choreographed, they all walk towards the camera with a look on their faces as if the are in Power Rangers TV Show, rather than something to be taken seriously.
As far as the actual story, i mean fuck the mythology. I said "fuck the mythology" in 1994. And i pat myself on the back every single day since then. I really never liked that part of the show. MOTW was where it was at for me.
I was somewhat disappointed, but left intrigued and wanting more.
I didn't feel like it dealt with the mythology the show took 9 seasons to build up very well, and it feels like there is a lot of incidental points out that may not be fleshed out but feel like they need to be (Mulder and Scully's relationship for the past 14 years).
I'm still going to watch, but my expectations have been lowered.
I rewatched it all of it like 2 months ago, so no nostalgia here. X-Files in its prime is driven, focused and engaging in both narrative and visual design.
As a whole it is up there as one of the most influential shows of all time and definitive for 90s television.
GoT has bombast and cultural influence, yet the sprawling plot with dozens of characters just isn't really suitable for TV. The cracks are already there and are only going to become more pronounced the more they are forced to rely on the two chuckleheads Benioff and Weiss.
And in 10 years nobody will remember anything about House of Cards except it being the first Netflix original.
Game of Thrones and House Cards are not even close to the best shows on currently. X files at its best (Home, Jose Chung's From Outer Space etc) was absolutely as good those shows.
I thought it was alright, but the "everything we thought we knew was wrong because this is a deeper conspiracy" angle just didn't work. It all comes suddenly but without any real weight. Overall the episode probably won't scare away longtime fans but also doesn't do much to woo new viewers.
Also, in the limo at the beginning Duchovny looked like he was falling asleep.
I don't agree. Mulder was largely monotone and very dry with his humor. Duchovney was exactly that. From the opening narration it felt like Mulder to me.
They might as well have had alex jones in the episode, he is more entertaining than that episode was. Imagine him delivering the conspiracy stuff would have been hilarious.
I'm JUST watching Season 1 on Netflix right now, so I'm now actually reading this thread, but is there any word on if this is a 6 episodes and they're done? Or are there plans for more episodes going forward?
The character is pure dog shit and McHale's delivery was horrendous. Mulder pulling up that fake YouTube site and watching his corny af videos, made me cringe hard.

Your criticisms of GoT only apply to the later seasons.
Any please, elaborate on this "wooden Hollywood" acting you speak of in today;s tv shows?
This latest X-Files episode had some pretty fkn wooden acting. Don't even think about comparing it to the likes of Peter Dinklage in GoT.
GoT is the victim of commercial backlash. If I wrote these posts 3 years ago, no one would respond with "GoT?!??! LOL terrible wooden acting, pointless sideplots, blahblahblah"
20 minutes in... I seriously wonder what Chris Carter thinks about himself. He clearly hasn't taken any of his criticisms of the last 20 years to heart.
Select fans have been seeing this episode since October. What's the gradual roll-in of reactions been like?
I could feel the love from Cannes to Comic-Con and the months that followed. It was very nice. Now, we've taken a couple critical hits, but I knew not everyone was going to like it. It was always going to land with some people and not with others. I'm very proud of the episode. I think it's got huge scope, huge paranoia and drives the mythology in a whole other direction.
Wow, some of you guys are brutally. As an X-Files fan since the original run on TV, I thought the new episode barely missed a beat. For better or worse, it was the X-Files I remembered and loved so much except a little more world-weary.
Now the real ratings test will be tonight's episode as last night had the huge lead-in of football. That said it was the highest rated post game show since 2012's episode of American Idol.
Also those numbers may change when the actuals come out as of the weird start time, etc. for it.
I like it but there is something not quite right about the episode. I didn't enjoy GA performance and McHale's long monologue was cringeworthy. I have the feeling I'm going to like the monster of the week episodes more than the mythology ones.

Not digging back through all of the responses in this thread, but if you're shocked at the quality of this episode, I'd suggest you probably weren't a huge fan of the original. Chris Carter doing vintage Chris Carter in 2016.
This is precisely what I was expecting, and in that regard, it did not disappoint. I'm excited to see where this goes. Also, I don't think people would be bitching as much about Joel McHale's character if it wasn't Joel McHale and just some other crappy actor.
Yep, that's the X-files. I enjoyed it in that sense. If anything, I'm surprised how little change to the style and tone.
I think people forget how weird the narrative of the original show was. There was some strange episodes, mostly penned by Carter, that were all over the map in pacing, dialogue and did things that I don't think you could get away with on a show today (lots of voice over...lots and lots of voice over).
But the characters held it up, and this was pretty much the same. I do hope for some lighter episodes, though. Those tended to be my favorites of the original series. At least two out of the six with some flare and sense of fun that standalones can do.

Yeah, I have to agree. It's a lot to ask for an opening episode to come back after so many years and try (albeit half-heartedly at best) to catch people up who have no idea what they're watching in 60 minutes. I thought it was completely serviceable and has me looking forward to the next 5 episodes.

I read through your responses here, so it's possible I missed your position to the contrary. Aside from the obvious issues with script, pace, and acting...what made you think this was going to be as good as the best episodes in the series? Your expectations should have been more along the lines of the 2nd theatrical release.
It's been two decades, to expect that this show is going to kick off screaming is just silly.
That is good. I managed to get it for $100 in Canada. It's definitely worth it. Season 8 discs have some issues though. The episodes are watchable but the colour and contrast seems off. You should google it.
Watched this and the preview show Re-Opening the X-Files last night.
Really happy with My Struggle. Chris Carter shoved a ton of stuff into the episode, but he didn't really have a choice. The six episode format, and the way they're structuring the season, kind of forced his hand. He had to re-contextualize the X-Files so it all makes sense in today's world. He also had to set-up a new conspiracy, establish the current status quo for Mulder and Scully and create the impetus to re-open the X-Files. It really should have been a 2 hour show just to let it all breath, but I'm fine with what we got.
I do like the direction they're taking things. Retconning "the truth" Mulder chased into another layer of conspiracy works for me. How much of it was real? How much of it was set dressing? There's a ton of stuff the viewer saw that Mulder never experienced. Will that stuff be explained or will it be left unexplained? We're now on equal footing with in these new episodes. We just don't know what to believe.
It was nice seeing Mulder and Scully back. There was some rough spots, but overall I thought David and Gillian did a great job getting back into the roles. They definitely captured a bit of the old chemistry, and I'm sure it'll get better as they settle back into their roles.
The preview was really cool. It didn't spoil anything, but did show a ton of crazy stuff they're doing this season. They focused on the premiere and one of the MOtW episodes. The little they showed of the MOtW episode made it seem like a fun episode with a
