the only thing that bugs about the kinda lame first episode is that there's only six episodes in total and one of them had to be filled with an underwhelming start.

Really wish it was a 10-13 season.

I'm hoping if the ratings are good we'll get a 10-13 episode season next year.

yea wish it was 13.
I find more and more i like shows that only have 12-13 episodes per season. Not nearly as much filler and the writers can really hammer down a good story.

Its not gonna happen but id like to see two more 13 episode seasons where they really wrap on the storylines and put the show to bed the right way.

I loved seeing all of the pencils in the old office. Of course, that scene was in promo material so I saw it early.

I watched Milagro last night. I didn't remember that episode, but it's a pretty good one. I was never one of those people who had a crush on Scully, but she looked fantastic in that episode/era.

There's a difference between playing someone with depression (however flimsy its introduction is) and popping a handful of valium before stepping on set.

I dunno, his delivery as Mulder has always had a wooden quality to me. Even Scully was like that quite a bit.

Unpopular(?) opinion alert:
Makes the Simpsons episode one of the most painful guest episodes to listen to.

Mulder up to season 6/7 was a charming motherfucker with dry humor. After that it was apparent Duchovny was checking out (first mentally, later physically).

In this episode it just seemed he wanted to go home the entire time. Like I said, the later seasons of Californication had the exact same problem.

Decent first episode, a bit stiff and at times even awkward. The porch scene and the Mulder - Skinner scene at the FBI office was awkward as hell, but I guess they all need to "warm up".

That 5-minute tag-team bombardment of conspiracy theories was fucking insane, I felt like I had to pause and take a break to process all that stuff.

I'm a bit confused. So was Mulder proposing that EVERY single alien encounter they ever had with black oil, bounty hunters, etc, etc. was all just humans with alien tech enacting some widespread conspiracy?

And Mulder and Scully boned and had a baby?.....how do I not remember that?

Yeah, it was a pretty impressive logic leap to make with such conviction on very little new evidence.

Can't help you there. Dunno how you don't remember it.

Just watched the episode and that was truly awful. I grew up watching the X-files and while the writing was never amazing it was light years ahead of this trash. I mean they jumped from Roswell to free energy and to worldwide event manipulation and new world order shit. Duchovney displayed the worst acting I've ever seen from him and thats saying something. The pacing was clunky and it really seemed like bad fan fiction.

Quick question, so it's supposed to be a 2 hour premiere right. So does tonight's episode count as episode 2 or episode 1 as part of the 2 hour premiere?

Just saw it, pretty meh reaction overall, huge x-files fan. Budget seemed to hurt it, a lot of dialogue felt stilted and pacing was off, probably a sign of Carter not being in the saddle so long. Winger was alright but still seemed out of place, the girl's acting was mostly terrible and not believable. Duchovny and Anderson carried it as best they could but it felt rushed overall. For a second I thought they'd spin it towards a disinfo angle, much like Jacques Vallee has talked about, basically using mentally ill people as fodder for the whole conspiracy theory entertainment machine. Still super hopeful for the motw eps, especially the Morgan ones.

Also...

Totally wronger about Nintendo's business decisions.

Yep, basically a super conspiracy. It's almost an exact retread of season 4/5 where Mulder was conviced (by good evidence) that the UFO conspiracy itself was all a ruse to get people like him who distrust the government to chase down dead ends. The difference is that in this super conspiracy there were actually no aliens at all. Now the super theory is that it started with a real alien at Roswell, but everything after that was done by humans. Except the ancient alien craft in the movie I guess?

If the plot actually goes this way I wouldn't mind too much. But the execution so far is just crap.

It was decent, thankfully critics have said the next few episodes are even better.

And I don't like Joel all that much, though he didn't seem like an asshole in this, was really calm. Unlike his appearance on the VGX awards.

Just watched episode 1 and I loved it. I'm a big fan and loved the original run, was glued every week.

Really got my juices flowing again for it and I'm going to buy the blu Ray box set to watch it all over again.

Review from GAF favorite Devin Faraci:

THE X-FILES Premiere Was Worse Than I Feared
He pretty much sums up my exact feelings towards the premiere as well. It was a bad script from Carter in the same way that I Want to Believe was bad.

But in all honesty, I didn't get that excited about the revival until Glen Morgan, James Wong and Darin Morgan were on-board. Along with Vince Gilligan, those were three of the show's best four writers. I was fully prepared to be underwhelmed by whatever Carter produced. All you can hope for is that "My Struggle II" won't be as bad.

Oh my god yes, they kept the original opening with a couple tweaks added.
But BOOOOO they had to shorten it to fit within modern day standards.

3 scenes really stuck out as terrible to me:
- the scene with Mulder and Scully on the porch, just terrible dialogue and forced catch phrases
- the scene with Mulder and the old bearded guy, constant cuts back and forth, terrible dialogue
- the scene in the house of Mulder and Jeff Winger describing the conspiracy, more crazy fast cuts back and forth and horrible dialogue.

Yeah, those are the three that stuck out for me as well.

The porch scene had a lot of "the truth is out there" and "i want to believe" lines dropped in for no good reason.

Incredibly bad.

Needs more sunflower seeds and Mulder watching porn.

You know what, it needs more character. You're absolutely right.

One of the reasons The X-Files Pilot is so well regarded is how it does such a great job of defining these characters and their relationship in a single episode. You know a lot about them only based on a couple of scenes. It's actually one of my favourite Pilot episodes ever.

It's hard to believe the same Chris Carter that wrote that, wrote last night's episode.

Well said. There's a very going through the motions vibe to their characterizations in this episode. Carter really could have used some levity in the script, it felt way too stuffy and "let's move this along to the next scene" with little room for the characters to breathe. MOTW should cover that, but shame we couldn't have seen it out of the gate.

Okay what the hell was that. I know the season gets better after this, but man it was pretty bad.

Especially the last five minutes of the episode was a reel of events. Come on. At first you're building towards a new conspiracy (with Joel McHale in a role which really didn't suit him. Can't take him seriously as some conspiracy O'Reilly) and you could really build upon it in the next few episodes, but nope; oh hey Mulder, what the hell man, you're going live with this garbage? Yup Scully I am. I know what I'm doing. *Rambles some weird 4chan theories around with Jeff Winger* Scully shakes her head, doesn't believe, watches laptop; you know what writing staff: LETS MAKE STUFF HAPPEN.

There's another new episode tonight right? I just figured last night was the intro episode that had to somehow bridge the gap in time. Can't say I loved how they went about that, but it makes more sense given the context of another new episode, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the episodes.

I want to believe
that the rest of the episodes are going to be better than this one.

I didn't have high hopes for the Carter episodes anyway, hopefully the rest of the season picks up momentum and gets into its sweet spot.

Enjoyed the 1st episode, not perfect but a decent enough start, really looking forward the next 2, with them getting pretty high praise. Hopefully the rest of the series will be great too.

Why did they make this? Never has the term "going through the motions" been so apt. It felt more like an SNL parody of the X-Files than anything else, without the humor.

Why did the smoke/cancer man look so weird, is it a different actor, have I forgotten he got set on fire ?

He was hit with multiple air-to-air missiles in the S9 finale. So he apparently has weird reconstruction surgery or something, like he's half plastic or something.
It's the same actor.

While they have boned, I believe the child was artificial insemination pre boning

Great to see the cast together but if this is it, then I hope they don't bother trying again.

I'm hoping the MotW episodes redeem this.

Same actor.

Apparently so. Kinda went "kaboom"

Thanks all.

Yeah, I've totally forgotten the later seasons on the X-Files except the invasion date.
