I wonder how Chris Carter feels having his episode being completely massacred by the other ones this season.

He has always seemed like one of the most selfless showrunners so I'm sure he's fine with it. He likes to get out of the way and let the writers do their thing.

And for all the flack he's taking he has brought this show back the right way, with some of the best earlier writers and a mix of all the elements fans loved. He can't be accused of not getting what people liked about the show originally, although I'm sure some hack journalist has written a piece saying exactly that.

So this is going to come back permanently right? Right!!??? This season is so damn good.

Depends, ratings were very good, but now its all on the actors. They are both busy with other things. Though if they just keep doing smaller seasons, I don't see the issue with that. Either that or offer them more money to make them full time.

Honestly I don't hold that first episode against him. You had to refresh the audience on the last 9 season + 2 movies, and set up the new status quo all in one episode. It really should have a been a 2 hour episode to let things breath.

Now if the next mythology Chris Carter episode blows, especially with how good these MOTW eps are? then he blew it

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
How are the ratings for the show? People were saying its doing huge numbers but a lot of the sites I've seen are vague or have different values.

X-Files and everything else took a hit this week.

Monday was not a great night for the broadcast networks, with a number of shows taking sizable hits.

FOX still led the night, but “The X-Files” (2.6, -0.6 vs. last week) and “Lucifer” (1.9, -0.5) each dropped by at least half a point. “Supergirl” (1.5) fell three tenths for CBS. “The Bachelor” (2.2) and “Telenovela” (0.8) each dipped one tenth, while “Superstore” (1.4) was flat vs. last week’s fast nationals (the show adjusted up a bit in the finals).

The exception was The CW’s “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” which is currently showing a season-high 0.4, up a tenth from last week.

Not sure how the US election would effect things but I imagine it may have had an impact.

The ratings are bleeding out fast. Show started strong at over 16 million and already down to 8.36mil. Very good chance it will keep dropping and we will never see X-Files again.

I dont really watch much network TV anymore, basically got a month free of PS Vue and have been using it to check out what's available. 8 million still sounds like a pretty solid number but then again I don't know what Fox considers a success for a show like this for current TV viewer standards.

It started that huge because of being after the NFL game, you can't really look at those ratings.

You need to compare last Monday to this Monday, while there was still a drop we'll see if it continues to drop next week or become stable. Either way a 2.6 rating is what people mainly look at not # of viewers, while that is important the rating itself is what really matters and a 2.6 is still huge for Fox. Last year on Monday the highest show was a 1.4/1.5 and has been that way for years for them.

This week they had the Iowa elections going on which hurt viewership for EVERY network, let's wait and see how it does next week.

edit: Also let's wait and see what the Live+3 ratings are (which count unlike Live+7) and see how many people watch last night's on DVR due to the Iowa stuff.

Too bad so many missed out on this fantastic episode

I am honestly not too concerned about a 2.6. It's a drop but it was always expected to drop, especially with all that caucus stuff going on.

Put me in the camp of brilliant episode. No doubt in my mind we are getting a second season.

The mythology at this point is way too convoluted for its own good, just stick to monster of the week type episodes.

he should be used to it lol...KappaFace I'm a fan of Carters Mythos episodes too, but there has always been better writers on the show from the start...

I mean, ratings don't even make sense. I watch X-Files on over-the-air TV, so I'm effectively invisible :\

And do they still use Nielsen boxes? What makes these people so great? They watch cable TV. That should be a strike against them anyway.

I think at this point they realize that there are more people watching than the rating suggests but it's still not a bad indicator of the mind share they have.

Only one more episode until it's Carter for the rest of the season. Hopefully, he's still got it. His MOTW episodes have always been hit or miss for me. Post-Modern Prometheus is probably his best, imo.

Guy Mann's human wardrobe is the same as Darren McGavin's character from the 1970s TV series Kolchak: The Night Stalker, which Chris Carter cites as a primary influence on The X-Files.

Fuuuuuck me, too good!

If anyone hasn't, check out Kolchak: The Night Stalker, it's legit good. I watched the first 4 or 5 eps but they removed it from Canadian Netflix pretty quick :\

So this ep I thought was great, but it reeeeaaaally pushed the fan-service. It's a little too on-the-nose, but it broke the right way for me, but I can see how it would turn a lot of people off. I think Scully was the best here, as the last two eps she came off as way too serious and morose, it was kinda putting me off as I have been watching old eps on Netflix, and she was always lighter in tone. Gillian Anderson said that she had to find Scully not where she was a dozen years ago, but where she would be today, and in that first ep especially it felt like she swing too far into being robotic. The only thing that pulled me out was when Mulder and Scully had the "I missed this" scene over the autopsy. I get the sentiment, but five people died. Kumail's aborted speech at the end was a nice touch.

As long as X-Files remains the most watched show in its time slot, I am confident we'll get more. So far, so good.

Are you being serious?

16mil was right after the NFC title game on a Sunday night. There's no way they were going to retain those numbers on a Monday night. Last night was 2.7/8.6mil viewers, that's damn good for a Monday and still the highest rated show for last night. I'm sure FOX wants to renew for more episodes....its just a matter if Duchovny and Gillian want to do more.

Let's hope he has another Irresistible in him.

I enjoy these episodes but whats bugging me is in this episode his office was like a mess but in the second episode it was all clean and with a lot more files... continuity seems like a mess.

That's because last week's episode was supposed to be episode 5.

Second episode was supposed to air fourth originally.

This in't 2000.

8 million is still very solid.

I thought it was terrible. I'm surprised to see so many people loving it.

Like, I like the idea behind it, and I loved a few lines (mulder predicting scully, and the "the internet isn't good for you, mulder").

But it was so amateurish, the sets, the photography, the actual writing...

I don't know, it felt too obvious instead of subtle. Felt like a cheap version of X-files :/ .

I'm not sure what felt amateurish about all those things mentioned. Care to elaborate? As someone said it seems like the Truck Stop is a real place, the motel looked like any seedy motel I've been to and so on.

I will straight out disagree on the writing, I really enjoyed it even when it was a bit on the nose.

Okay, I loved the camp here.

... ... Was I the only one expecting the muderer to say "And I would have gotten away with it too if it weren't for those medling agents!" Felt like a Scooby-Doo episode. X-Files tune playing from Mulder's phone slayed me.

I looked online and I was really shocked that Darin Morgan hasn't really done all that much other than The X-Files and Millennium.. The guy is a fucking genius.
