So without spoiling me, has this been a worthy revival (so far) and a good reason to watch all 9 seasons of the xfiles or is this likely going to be a failed attempt at reviving the franchise and not truly finish the story?

Just a minor spoiler because of something you said:
the finale ends on a cliffhanger

Despite what some might call "bad" episodes they are still X-Files and there for awesome. David and Gillian have such amazing chemistry.

The more episodes we get the better.

The old stuff is worth watching period.

This episode is terrible so far. Carter was never good at one off eps. These junior agents better not be sticking around. Though given how this has gone I'm not sure anyone should :/ ep 3 was great but everything else has only shown flashes of the greatness of the og series.

I thought the episode was great! I dunno if anything can top the lizard man episode though.
Opinions and all i hope we get more episodes in the future

I hope we get more from Wong and both Morgans. Even though Glen and James' episodes were both far from their best I prefer them to both of Carter's so far. The X Files and I parted ways after those guys left the show. I'm glad for season 10 even just on the strength of Darin's episode. I'd happily tune in for another short season if the writing room stays the same.

WHAT ABOUT MAH MEN????

This post is better than tonight's episode. T_T

Seriously, wtf were they thinking introducing these CW thift shop Mulder/Scully duo in the second to last episode? They weren't even likable.

Lamest bit, imo, was Lone Gunmen cameo. They could've been used as tie into this season's "theme" and prep for the crazyness that episode 6 seems it will be.

I really enjoyed it.

Having Mulder and Scully go with their opposite counterparts was neat, even though I was expecting Miller and Mulder and Eisenstein and Scully, this worked out well, too. Yeah, Muslim stereotypes out the wazoo and the episode is pretty blatant with its themes and message, however, getting shroomed Mulder was worth it. Liked the ending with each pair of agents reconciling with each other.

Thank you. I know it ends on a cliffhanger, which is why I don't want to get invested In a series that has no end (if season 10 were to suck and get axed or just end up not progressing the plot at all)

What I don't understand is Carter had a 2nd movie to cap off the series and instead choose not to. Did he always think he'd get a season 10? Has their been any core/non-monster of the week episodes yet in season 10? Do we get the feeling we may get a real series end now?

You say that as if it was his actually his choice. The only reason they got to do the last movie was because they promised Fox they could fast track it into production without rewrites to give them something to film during the writer's strike.

The first episode was mytharc but it completely retconned the mythology by repeating the fake out from season 5(6?) finale. The finale is mytharc too but as they already said it ends on a cliffhanger who knows if it'll have any closure esp as the stuff we were waiting to be resolved from the og series isn't cannon anymore. Unless it's yet another fake out.

That episode was kind of a mess. The dialogue at the end... ugh. I had enjoyed the last three quite a bit, but this one didn't really work for me.

Batshit insane episode. It didn't totally work for me, but I have to hand it to the X-Files for trying to "solve" international terrorism through drugs, music, and open-heartedness. There was something quietly moving about the madness.

EDIT: Reading through the thread and wondering why most of the people here watch the show if they hate it and its creator so much.

I enjoyed the episode, they didn't play it safe and seemed experimental, I cracked up on Mulder's trip to say the least. The ending was another great Mulder and Scully moment aswell.

It's sad the next episode is the season finale, but it's looking very likely we will be getting a new season and possibly a third film.

Mulder's trip at the bar was a little too long, like they were trying to make a music video.

Overall, I don't know. I thought it was about the same as that garbage episode.

Lizard
First ep
Garbage = this
Second ep

And, personally, I wasn't even a huge fan of that lizard episode. :p

That was a weird one. Mostly the Mulder hallucination, obviously.

I'm still not sure of what I thought of it overall, but I did enjoy it and the trip was funny. I never thought I'd see bad country music and The X-Files mix, or see Mulder dancing like a country fool.

Cliffhanger? It's about a couple of civil servants working at their government job closing case after case as it crosses their desks.

The series finale is them getting a gold watch, slicing a supermarket cake at 1:30pm on payday, handing in their badge, and going back to their apartments.

edit: okay, that reads overly harsh. It's nothing against you, I just feel personally, that certain shows are plotted in such a way to lend themselves to conclusion, something like The Fall, or Breaking Bad, whereas other shows are more open-ended, like Foyle's War, or Star Trek: TNG.

X-Files isn't particularly plotted in such a way that I feel it needs a satisfying "conclusion." They moved the goal posts with the alien/government conspiracy so many times that any "resolution" is going to feel half-baked anyway.

In light of me enjoying the last three episodes to varying degrees, this episode certified one thing: Chris Carter really has nothing left to say to me regarding the X-Files.

Seriously. He's done for me. I approach the finale with no hope at all. As a writer and director, his fire has long gone out. Duchovny and Anderson, coupled with the guest writers and directors, made this a worthwhile endeavour but Carter has gone bye-bye.

His Season 9 output and the attrocious Finale? Gave benefit of the doubt due to burnout. Second movie? Gave benefit of doubt due to maybe being a bit rusty / Studio politics / misfire. First episode of this season? Again may have taken a while to warm up. This one? Too far.

I liked last nights ep. Too bad after the first 10 seconds I thought: well, this is obviously going to be a terrorist type thing.

Disappointed that that happened.

Not enough screen time for Skinner

Just watched Ep 5, really enjoyed it.
Finally it felt like there was life in Mulder again. He actually seemed engaged in the case in contrast to the other serious episodes this season.
Yeah the terrorist plot was a bit on the noose, but this felt the most like a regular old x-files episode of all these news ones to me.
It was about one specific case and all parties were engaged in it.
Shame the Lone Gunmen only had such small cameos though.

Yeah, I wasn't big on that either. It could have been just about any such, but they went with the lazy, 'controversial' way out.

Still, liked the episode over all.

I liked it and Mulder and scully talking at the end really brought me back. When would we hear if this gets greenlit for a full real season?

For me the season is two for five right now (Founder's Mutation and Were-Monster being the only episodes I found to be genuinely good).

But I seem to enjoy even the bad episodes so I'll gladly take another season.

Yeah, when it comes to The X-files, even the misses entertain me enough to keep coming back.

For me, this revival has been a success but the overall quality needs to go up if there is going to be more.

I liked the counterparts, maybe I'm biased because I love every actor from Six Feet Under so seeing Lauren Ambrose was great. The trip was ok but felt kind of off, hard to explain. It was fun to an extend but compared to a real trip it was more like drunk... maybe I'm comparing too much to my personal experiences. My biggest gripe with this episode was that there was no mystery or tension at all. Also the music used at the end sucked and did not feel like X-Files at all.

I've been watching the blurays the last few weeks (end of s5, movie, s6, halfway through s7) and was really amazed how many great episodes there were in those later season.

What really stuck out to me with these new episodes

- everything is much too vibrant and well lit, even the night shots.
- except for episode 2 there was never any mystery
- Anderson looks way too 'botoxed', she does not look that bad in interviews but in these episoded she looks like half her face is frozen.

It's still nice to have the show back as it really sparked my interest in the old season again but something is not as it should be. To me it feels a bit like Sherlock S1&2 compared to 3 or Indy 1-3 compared to 4.

The appeal of X-files for me has always been Fox and Scully not the overall story which I never really nerded out on. That is why I like the one-off episodes the best. The chemistry between the lead actors is why X-files is great and nothing has been able to replace it.
