Second gold for Poland today, great day. Bravo Stoch! Congrats to Kasai, his 7th Olympics and silver medal. Wow.

I am honestly fine with them doing it by either gold medals or total medals. Both of have some logic behind them.

Never understood the hissy fits some members of gaf have over the issue (thinking back to 2012 thread).

A points system would be most accurate, but I don't think the public would understand it.

Is there a reason why women's ice hockey is so underrepresented in Russia of all places? I was reading some article and it mentioned that there are 80,000 female ice hockey players in Canada, 50,000 in the US, and 300 in Russia. Wat.

It's kind insane that Kasai made his debut in world cup back in 1989... I was not even born back then.

And only medal he won so far has been team silver from Lillehammer. And until this year's ski flying in Kulm, his last victory goes to 2003/2004 season - which means almost 10 year drought. But major kudos for his determination and strong will to keep competing and setting new records. Living legend.

Can someone explain to me the purpose of the "B final" in short track?

In the 1500 m, it's pretty much useless because there are 6 skaters in the "A final". But in the 500 m and the 1000 m, there are only four skaters. If two of them are disqualified, the winner of the "B final" wins the bronze medal. It happened a few Olympics ago (Nagano I think).

Watching the replay of the CAN/GBR curling game... holy shit two picks for us in the 10th end. That's the shittiest luck. And I didn't see it but apparently Brad's last rock in the 9th which should've been an easy deuce picked too.

I guess Murdoch's fuck-up at the end of the 10th was a bit of karmic justice.

Let's not be so hard on ourselves, Canada. We are doing pretty well for a loosely populated country, I think. XD

Not a real reason at all. Everyone blames our population to excuse poor performances and it is sickening. I also hate the whole "We are a winter country" garbage that gets used to excuse our horrible summer olympic performances.

Better than the garbage I've heard IRL blaming immigration from certain countries. Fucking racists.

We'll never be a Summer Olympics powerhouse, and location and population have a huge impact on it. Our population is clustered around a few cities separated by hundreds to thousands of kilometers. Additionally, we are one of one of the coldest countries in the world.

Our population is impacted because we're not all 34 million close by, we don't have the corporate sponsorship or governmental support of other nations. It wasn't until a few years ago that medal winner even got any financial support or money. Our closest comparison will be to Australia. They are a Summer powerhouse, yet struggle in the Winter.

Things will change, the increasing population and support in BC, the facilities in Whistler, increasing population in Calgary and Edmonton etc. It's why Quebec and Ontario have always really dominated. Huge population, financial support and facilities nearby make it easier to train year round.

Those countries have specific sports that are a significant part of their lifestyles. Swiss-alpine, Netherlands-speed skating, Norway-cross country. They are very good at their specialities.

Canadians don't really have specific sports as a lifestyle unless you want to include hockey and curling. Hockey and Curling don't have a lot of olympic events like those other countries benefit from.

Clearly we need to invent new hockey and curling events, like long-track hockey or pairs hockey or moguls curling or something :p

Mixed curling was considered for the Vancouver and Sochi Games, and will likely be included in the future.

But Canadians have a mixed record when it comes to Curling golds at the Olympics...

Funny, I was just thinking about how it makes no sense for Curling to be divided into men's and women's categories. It's not exactly a sport that's affected by male-female physical differences.

Sweeping strength is definitely a factor. Team Canada doesn't have those huge biceps just for show.

But I do think mixed team curling should be added to the next winter Olympics.

Canadian men are not winning curling gold. I just don't see it.

Yah wtf just happened with that US rock that got removed? The CBC commentators didn't even see it they're watching the other match lol smh.
