Theme Parks & Roller Coasters |OT| The Happiest Place on GAF

It's been 6 years since I've been to Disney (WDW), and I'm starting to go insane.

I need my fix.

I'd love to visit Anaheim next, but it's a bit too far and expensive. Paris is possible, but I've heard it's a bit of a mess nowadays.

WDW would be great to visit again, but considering I've been 8/9 times (I forget how many) and that Avatar is a way off, I don't see the point just yet.

If you go to Orlando, you can make a stop at Universal!

Expedition Everest should be a must-ride if you happen to go. I think it's quite a bit better than the Matterhorn Bobsleds in Anaheim. More detail on the backstory/design/Yeti.

It's shame that the Yeti will forever be stuck in 'B' Mode, since it would require Disney to remove 3/4 of the Everest mountain to fix him.

At least I got to see him in 'A' mode... once... just once. :(

It's amazing that they didn't think ahead to what would happen if the 'A' mode broke.

You got to saw him back when he still moved? That must've been awesome. I guess that's one good thing about Matterhorn though. Harold has very few moving parts so he doesn't need that much maintenance.

Just slap a strobe light on dat shit.

Off topic of yeti's, I heard a rumor that they might consider turning the Aladdin musical into a Frozen one. Any thoughts and/or confirmation on that?

And people thought Universal should have had an Optimus Prime or Megatron AA in Transformers. Crazy AAs like that just aren't feasible in most cases. Fans can hate on screens all they want but the Yeti or any number of the Radiator Springs Racers AAs that have constant trouble are proof that insane AAs like that simply can't run every 30 seconds for 10+ hours a day consistently.

Yeah, I'm still surprised that they decided to build it that way, either they didn't think that far ahead or disco yeti was always his fate. I saw him in A mode a couple times and it was indeed a great effect.

Well, Uni does have a big AA in Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, but I bet if that goes into B mode, they wont have to take down half the castle to fix it.

Disney has said that they would love to fix it, but it would mean bringing down Everest for a crazy long refurb, and the only time I can see that happening is when Avatar-land opens in a few years, and everyone is in that section of the park... but I do think that they owe to the park paying guests to fix it.

I mean its your one big E-Ticket attraction in the park, and you just let it sit in B mode... Come on Disney!!!

I've been on EE many times. ;)

Great ride, but shame about the Disco yeti.

Looks awesome.

Those twist and turns seem really fun. Also love when they enter the firework building, pretty good effects there.

If you go after august Paris will be as better as ever, as they would already had built Ratatouille (studios is shittier than before California Adventure was refurbished, probably the worse Disney theme park, but it has a Crush Coaster that is pretty amazing, and ratatouille when it's built. For shows Cinemagique and Animagique are really good although somewhat dated and Moteurs, Action is also good). I was there 2 years ago just a week before the 25th anniversary. It was pretty great.

Disneyland has the best Pirates of the caribbean, old Star Tours and Disney Dreams, and their own original Haunted Mansion (Phantom manor) and Big Thunder Mountain. Space Mountain would still be amazing if not for the shitty restraints (they are going to change them). Apart of that it has great scenery you will not find in other parks.

But I will say, after having gone to Anaheim and Paris, I prefer Anaheim, not that paris is bad though.

I actually kind of like Disneyland Paris' Phantom Manor/Big Thunder Mountain. It's got extra scenes that aren't in the Disneyland Anaheim one.

I like more Haunted Mansion for the sense of story, while the good story of Phantom Manor is only in the land's background, you need to find of it, and the scenes don't have a particular story, some are just there, because.
And of course Grim Grinning Ghosts at full in Haunted Mansion. Although the background eerie music for Phantom Manor is superb.
Don't get me wrong, I also love Phantom Manor, but I like a little more HM, I love they are different aswell.

Big Thunder Mountain, the placement in Paris is unbeatable (an island!), but the background history of Anaheim is awesome, that's why I love to see scenes like Rainbow Caverns from Rainbow Caverns Mine Train and the Rainbow Ridge buildings from Mine Train through Nature’s Wonderland staying in the different version's of the ride.
I wen't at night and it felt awesome.
Big Thunder Mountain in Paris is also really fun, and the last part when you go below the lake in total darkness and at max speed is awesome.

So yeah, I love both parks, even if I like Anaheim a little more.

According to Spirit of '74 they wouldn't have to tear down the mountain, hence why the Yeti AA wasn't in the mountain until after the rockwork was completed. It is a CM fairy tale like the foundation cracked one. According to Spirit there were 3 to 4 proposals to fix the Yeti and other non working effects but they didn't want to close the attraction for extended periods and deal with the issues that would create.

You could infer from MyMagic+ seen as they have a hourly ride deficit currently the Mountain won't get fixed.

Yet Disneyland does make thier rides better by taking old rides down for extended periods, and people love it when they return.

I'm very tempted to go to Disneyland in Anaheim, but it's just finding someone to go with. :(

For 10 days in California it would cost around £1,000 for flights/hotel, but only a few days of that would be spent in Disney.

I have no idea where to go or plan such a trip.

I went from Spain 6 days and I had a great time. 2 days at Disneyland/DCA, 1 at Universal and the rest we saw Los Angeles/Hollywood.
We spent the nights at a hotel in Anaheim 5 minutes walking from Disneyland. We rent a car for the week to go to Los Angeles and Universal.

All the trip costed us around 1200 euros (park tickets, renting car, even souvenir and food included), the most expensive was the plane. The hotel was cheap and amazingly good and clean (I recommend it, look for Clarion Hotel Anaheim Resort in google. I think it was 140 euros 5 nights without breakfast, not that you need those).

On a 10 day trip I would add another day to Disneyland, and also go to Six Flag Magic Mountain and Knott's Berry Farm (somethign I really wanted to do when I wnet there and couldn't becuase of time). If you don't want to visit more parks, maybe do a trip with the rent car to Las Vegas or San Francisco, but that means being on the road for lots of hours.

We went in the middle of June, had great weather (Mornings were always cloudy though), and decided to go to the parks during weekdays so we didn't do many queues.

Hope this helps.

Disneyland is a 2 day park at best... maybe 3 if you really want to search out every nook and crannie of the place.

The other 8 days you are in LA, you could always hit up the following spots:

- Universal Hollywood
- Six Flags Magic Mountain
- Hollywood
- Venice Beach & Santa Monica Pier
- Griffiths Observatory

I am not sure what you are into, but I would suggest you check places like Trip Advisor or other vacation review sites and try to get an idea of what you might want to see. Also, if you are going during a part of the year when TV shows are taping, you could also try to get tickets to sit in the audience for a TV show...

Knott's would be a decent place to visit as well if you have any extra money to spend while you're there. If you go to Six Flags, keep in mind that it'll likely be your only destination that day because of how far away it is from everything else.

Also, when you do California Adventure, remember to get a fastpass for either Radiator Springs Racers or reserve a spot for World of Color as soon as you get to the park because those tend to go away quickly. 8 days is more than enough to get all of that done.

Disney maxed out the tickets to 5 days at Disneyland without an annual pass. I personally do 3-3.5 days every time but I get Mon-Thurs off from work every week. I think 4 days is the sweet spot if you want to eat at a few table services and see some shows (Aladdin is great). Knotts is a great choice since it's just blocks away from Disneyland and tickets can get crazy cheap. The Potter stuff I think is scheduled to open at Universal sometime in 2016. The next D23 expo is August 2015. If I went then I would definitely take a day to check that out.

I actually did all this when I went there. +Little Tokyo and the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
1 day for Universal
1 day for Hollywood, Griffiths Observatory and Venice Beach+Santa Monica Pier
1 day in downtown Los Angeles (little Tokyo and Walt Disney Concert Hall).
2 days at Disney and DCA.

APrt for 1 or two rides in Disneyland and DCA, I had time to see all of that in a 6 days trip.

A cool guy told us exactly this (there was no Radiator Springs at the time) when we went to Hard Rock Cafe at Universal, he was working at the shop and told us what where we going to do next day, so we said DCA. He told us whatever we did, run as the park opened to get the "fast pass" reservation of World of Color. It worked wonders.

Something I have to said I loved from all that area (Anaheim, los angeles, etc...) is the people being so open and treating us so well (outside and inside the parks). I can't say the same thing when I went to New York. Don't know if its luck or what, but we encountered nothing but great people on our Los Angeles trip.

It really does. Even I still have to get up early and go if I want a spot for World of Color, which feels like a hassle at times because if I'm going by myself I won't leave until like 3pm.

World of Color fastpass is disconnected from the rest of the system, as is Radiator Springs Racers. Screamin' is often disconnected as well. You can 4 fastpasses within the first hour if you wanted.

I find it odd that Disney spent the time and money to put in those new background lights for the World of Color winter special just to revert back to the old projections after it went back to the original show.

That is pretty handy, I knew about the World of color one, but not screamin. I love Screamin, is one of my favourite coasters.

So, what are the crowds like at DL and CA in early June, on a Saturday? I am planning to take a trip down while I am in town for E3 and really do not feel like standing in crazy lines for a lot of the rides...

Does Radiator Springs Racer have a single rider line?

Bad. Any time during holidays or just Saturdays in general is pretty crowded. And Radiator Springs Racers does in fact have a single rider line, but even that's pretty crowded on crowded days. right now the single riders line is 50 minutes because it's a Tuesday on spring break. Hopefully you'll be there before most schools go on summer vacation so you'll only have to fight the Annual Pass crowds. The rides with the shortest lines tend to be California Screamin', Haunted Mansion, and Pirates of the Caribbean, but pirates might be long if it's hot that day. Abandon all hope of riding Big Thunder Mountain without a fastpass.

Useful edit: I don't know how accurate this is, but it may be of use to you.

Does it absolutely have to be Saturday? If you can only go that weekend, you should try for Sunday instead. It won't be AS bad.

Well you're going to be dependent on your fastpasses so try to plan that out.

I wish that they opened E3 to the public again. It looks like it would be awesome in there.

It's not... trust me. Its way over crowded and most demo stations have like a 2hr wait.

Thanks guys!

I was originally planning on 2 (maybe 3) days in Disney, potentially a day in Knott's, and then venture elsewhere after that. I'm not too interested in going to Universal Hollywood if I'm honest, especially since I'd much rather go back to Universal the next time I'm in Florida.

I'll potentially be going with my friend, but unfortunately neither of us can drive yet. Because of this I'm going to start investigating ways we can see as much of California as possible, but perhaps that's far too ambitious? If we were just going to stay around Anaheim it wouldn't be a problem, but we're not solely going for Disney.

Chances are it won't happen this year, but if it did we'd probably go around September.

Well at least go see the studio tour in universal if you haven't in a while. They've altered a lot.

Studio tour is indeed great, and Universal Hollywood is worth it just to experience the insane landscape/layout. It has such a different vibe than any other park.

Yeah, it's because Universal Hollywood is a fully functioning movie studio while Universal Orlando is completely a theme park now that they don't film the live Nickelodeon shows there anymore. In some ways that's a downside because Universal Hollywood is only half the size that it could be if there was no studio, but that's also what makes it unique and accounts for most of its revenue.

I had a great time in the studio tour, but we did the one from the park, theres a better one that is more expensive, no?

It's tough to get around in California without a car, honestly. You can take the metro from hotel to hotel.

Yeah, you really need a car to move around sadly. Maybe ask someone to come that can drive?

Would there be any foreseeable price drop in annual passes in the future? I know they just keep upping the price so it's probably really unlikely.

This thread has not been updated in a couple of weeks, and I do not like that!

So what does everyone think about this new "Epcot After Hours Wind Down" Program?

The Orlando Sentinel reports that a new program will start at Epcot on Thursday called the Epcot After-Hours Wind Down… which will allow guests to stay and linger (and drink) in the park after the nightly fireworks show is over, but for a price. You have to make reservations at one of four possibly locations to extend your park visit from 9:20pm (the end of Illuminations) until 11pm at the Rose & Crown Pub (UK Pavilion), La Cava del Tequila (Mexico Pavilion), Tutto Gusto (Italy Pavilion) or the new Spice Road Table (Morocco Pavilion) and it will cost you $35 per person. The cost will also include ‘small bites with a beverage flight’ and the program will run through to Sept. 19th, ending just in time for the Food & Wine Festival to start up.

Also, Disney released a teaser video of what the AA Dwarves will look like on the Mine train ride...

First Look: Feast Your Eyes On Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Characters

I like the way they are going, but I always feel that when the face is just a computer image projected onto a blank canvas, you are taking the easy way out. This seems like an updated version of what they are doing with Buzz Lightyear over at his ride in Tomorrow Land.

Seems to be less costly than sculpting the face and animating it with robotics, in the video it doesn't look too good, but evry time I se that effect when I go to the parks it loos much better in person.

Just leave all of WS open later. All those restaurants, carts, shops should not close at 9/10 everyday.

Just leave all of WS open later. All those restaurants, carts, shops should not close at 9/10 everyday.

That is the exact argument I made to a friend who is also a Disneyphile.

Right now Disney is the only Orlando destination with no nightlife places to go to for food and drink.

If I go to Universal, I have Citywalk. If I go to downtown Orlando, I have Church St. Hell, I can even go to Old Town or International Drive for bars and restaurants...

Disney needs to keep WS open to like 1am... Let people walk around, enjoy WS, sit outside under the stars, drink Wine in Paris, or Saki in Japan... Give people something.

If they kept this program going, and had it so that WS was open until 11pm S-T and 1/2am on F-S, I would gladly pay $35 for that experience.

Downtown Disney/ Pleasure Island? I know it's being redone, but it seems to fit the bill.

Pleasure Island as it used to be has been closed since 2008, and most of it is demolished.

Other than shopping and casual dining, there is nothing "night life" about the current state of DTD, maybe the bowling place and the movie theater excluded.

However, a friend recommended Jellyrolls at the Boardwalk, a dueling piano bar. 21 and up.
