There's currently no way of getting your Switch save data from one console to another

Even if it's possible, you shouldn't make things up as fact.

Uhh, Nintendo has literally made multiple references to cloud saves, both publicly and in their dev docs. What is being made up exactly?

So don't break your Switch before then, folks! Or your 40+ hour Zelda save file is toast.

I'd say you have much bigger issues if you're deathly afraid of breaking electronic equipment months after buying it. Not saying I would't have liked this at launch, but your "fear" is kind of laughable

Cloud savea when online dies what then?
I am sure when the homebrew is out you can but still that will take years.

This was my main problem with the Wii U, and I'm not pleased to see it return. I recall some chatter about cloud saves, however, so maybe that will come with the online service.

On the 3DS, even though data was device/account-tied, you could still back up the contents of your SD card to your hard drive in case of an emergency. It seems like a big step back that this isn't also supported via the Switch micro-SD slot, from what the article says.

That's a big issue if you have a console that doesn't work anymore and you need to switch consoles with a new one.

They are going to do something about it though, it's not an issue for day one.

Wouldn't be surprised to see cloud saves coming with their paid online service. In fact, it would be more surprising if it didn't.

Yes, it's 2017, but it's also Nintendo...

We can chat about this more through our Switches after you send me your friend code.

I wouldn't be surprised if keeping the saves off of external storage was a stability and security measure. We wouldn't want saves to corrupt if someone removes the microSD at the wrong time, and let's be honest, many homebrew exploits have originated from save data hacks.

I'm guessing there's no option to back up saves to SD like the 3DS got in one of its updates?

Understandable.

With no real web browser and no SD card saves (at least at launch, for both), it's going to be tricky to find a way to get homebrew running.

About what?

He didn't want to play too much on the review switch because he didn't know if you were going to be able to transfer the save. Apparently they had not been given an answer before. That's part of the reason his Zelda thoughts weren't final at all.

Blah just realized poor Dan is going to have to replay the whole thing on his own Switch unless he is just going to use the review unit for everything.

Cloud saves haven't even been mentioned by Nintendo. Stop making up stuff. Not today, not months ago, not years ago.

In the developer documentation it says this:
Data Store
This is a network storage feature. Any data can be optionally saved to the game server. This saved data can be tagged, searched, and appended with ratings and the like.

That could simply refer to the creation of user generated levels which are then stored on a server to be shared with other users.

You don't need to both exchange codes. It's shit, but it's not applicable to your hot take zinger.

This level of stupidity here just makes my head hurt. So they finally figured out that tying games to specific hardware is a bad idea, but now saves are effectively locked to hardware. Correct me if I'm wrong but this was never a problem on the Wii U, right?

If this was a standard console, I'd agree with you. But this is a home/portable hybrid. Giant Bomb already dropped the Switch on concrete and ruined the Joy-Con attachment rails. I guarantee you a small number of people will break their Switches in the coming months before cloud saves are implemented.

My mom says I can't share it with people I don't know.

Saves being on the Switch only is probably an anti-piracy measure. Thats my guess at least. Same reason why they dont have a browser. Same reason why Sony bundled the game and save together on Vita, so that people couldnt mess around with save game exploits. You could backup saves (with the game included) on Vita to a PC, and cloud (save game only) is also available.

Will be addressed in one way or the other soon. I'm expecting cloud saves as well as a back up option like we have on 3DS.

how can you be concerned about when the online is shutoff for a unannounced cloud saves system on a console that's not even out til tomorrow. that's so many years out.

Actually the Joycons broke not the console. Seems like in a dropping situation Nintendo made it so the joycons are the first point of failure which is good since they are cheaper.
