These are the good old days....

I think the Carly Simon song rings true for this generation of games....

I think many of us have been through some really great gaming times, but I don't think even the NES generation can touch the current gen...

I
DO
NOT
HAVE
ENOUGH
TIME
TO
PLAY
ALL
THESE
GREAT
GAMES

Think of all the great XBOX/PS2/GCN titles you would like to play, but don't have enough time and/or cash for...

And when was the last time you said "oh my aching wallet" in MARCH (not November)....for me, this is the first time EVER!!!

I am not even gonna try to make a list of worthwhile games for this generation because I would be writing a book...

RPGs, and Drivers, Niche games and Blockbusters, Sleepers and Word-of-Mouthers...there are probably over 100 games I define worthwhile titles this gen, and at LEAST 25 of them are must-play classics......THAT IS A LOT....

IMO, this gen(Dreamcast, PS2, GC, XBOX) is unmatched compared to any other gen for *volume* of great games (I love Zelda 3 and Super Metroid as much as anybody....but, comparatively, there are more games of that quality now)...

These are the good old days.....

I'm going to have to make my definition of "classic" way, way more stringent than it was in the past... mainly because I haven't touched any video games in the past month save the ones I was reviewing/previewing for my job.

At this point the definition will have to be "something so good, it'll even make my mother cry".

My backlog is at it's pinnacle right now. Gaming have never been that good i agree!
I've bought the likes of 20 games (PS2/GC) since last August. I had time to play to somewhat 6-8 of them only yet. lol

I agree. This generation is probably one AAA game away from being the best ever. PM2, MGS3 and RE4 within months of each other was sheer bliss in itself.

Thought this was a thread about how the PSP launch kicked up the intensity of debate and how you couldn't wait to see it expand at E3. But, yeah, this generation has been the best IMO. But if all the Japanese companies can embrace online next, I think it's still got a little room for improvement.

I said it in another thread, I prefer this generation the most. I'm a Coleco Vision child and yet still - this gen wins. It wins in sheer volume of quality and, most importantly, variety. Because let's face it, we have about 30 new genres now that we didn't have back in the NES days ;P

Anyway, when I read the title I said to myself...

"These are the good old days... the all or nothing days... they're back."

If you know what it's from you win two points.

I agree. This generation only just took off though. It was like pretty much any other before now. Sure, there were some I absolutely adored, like Metroid Prime, but this constant stream of top quality games recently has really pushed this gen over the top,

Yep. I get very frustrated when crybabies (often Nintendrones) start in with the whole "video games aren't good anymore" bullshit. I got the Atari 2600 in 1979 and I've been playing steadily since, and no generation has had as many quality games and ABSOLUTELY no generation has had such good prices on games. Between the Xbox, PS2, GC and DC there are at least 2,000 games (counting multi-platform titles) and you could probably buy 75% of them for under $30 right now. Best time ever to be a gamer.

Those type of people should just give up gaming. It's clear that they don't enjoy videogames anymore (considering the amount of quality games this gen), all they have is nostalgia for old games.

This gen rox. Lots of good stuff...I bought the most games ever from this gen (due to having all 3 consoles). Plus GBA and PSP. Too many games!

*looks at this gen games owned: 14 (21 if GBA counts)*
*looks at past gen games owned: ~200*

I'd have to say no. :lol

It's not nostalgia when that's what you mainly play. :)

This gen beats all others for sheer quantity of quality titles.

The average game is also of a much higher quality than those of previous generations.

Finally, a lot of the gaming experiences that I've always dreamt about (GTA) were finally made possible this generation.

This gen truly is awesome. the only reason I'd want the next one to come is so the prices would drop for the games that I haven't gotten to play this gen. Here's a list of all of the games with an average over 90% at gamerankings this gen:

90 games over 90%. You could take away from the list a bit because of the multiplatform titles, but still, those are just the games over 90%. There's so many more that are of much better quality than any other generation. There's more to come that aren't even on that list yet (SC:CT, new Legend of Zelda, etc.). It's great to be a gamer.

In my opinion, one of the main reasons we are in the golden age of gaming is because the Western Developers, at last, have picked up the slack and delivered a CONSISTANT stream of good games this gen....

Oh yeah, there have always been classic games from the west here and there, but shit, even Electronic Arts will ship a good game from time to time, and they used to be a joke publisher....

Capcom, Namco, Konami, Square, Nintendo....these Japanese developers have been making great games from day one, so the fact they are still creating great games is nice, but not surprising....

Its the DMA designs, the EA Canadas and the Pandemic's out there that are picking up the pace and releasing solid titles which wasn't always the case....

Of coure, this is just IMO....

It's a greeeeeeat time to be a gamer in the West.

What's got me miffed this generation iz that i missed out on a TON of quality titles for the GBA... and the fact i haven't had the time to complete my games 100%. Oh well.

Now the only thing that bothers me iz Japan's falling enthusiasm in videogames:(
