"They are so poor, and so Black."

I dunno.

What I got from that (truncated) clip was the point that the poverty and race of the victims is directly linked to the suffering they're dealing with. I could be wrong, but I'm not gonna lynch the guy.

Not YET.

I agree... I think black as in the color of their mood... not as in the color or their skin...

I think he was trying to say that it can't help but look like race/poverty has to do with the slow response since the majority of those affected are "so poor and so black"...

I dont know about the rest of you guys, but I hate when someone calls me "Black", theres no such thing. African American maybe?

i hear "so black" as "overwhelmingly black" as in the affected population. However, people hear what they want to hear depending on who said it.

hey konex, is this a political correctness spin? :lol

African American? :lol What about those of us who aren't American? What about white South Africans who gain American citizenship? :lol

He was trying to say that the victims are primarily poor and primarily black. It came out a bit garbled, but it's hardly racist. It came out a bit wrong, but such are the perils of live television. Next imaginary crisis, please!

Living in Canada that makes you a African-Canadian.

and to answer you next question, i'd say South African American.

Take this test and tell me which is more natural

some guy: you know Tim? he is a cool guy.

Some other guy: who is Tim?

Some Guy A: Tim is the African-Candian guy who worked on Warhammer 40k. B: Tim is the Black guy who worked on Warhammer 40k

I hate being called African American. I've never been to no fucking Africa. My parents haven't, my grandparents haven't, my great grandparents;etc.

And I have no urge or reason to GO to Africa. So I call myself either Afro-American or black.

I understand what your saying but I think that African-American has History behind the word, "black" to me doesnt. Guess its how you look at it.

I have to agree with this post...

"I think he was going with the whole "so" theme and threw the word "so" in front of Black. If he said "they are SO poor and the majority of them are Black" ...would he still raise ire?
I don't think this is a racist comment...just a dumb one to say "so Black". But face facts, the majority of those who lost everything ARE Black.
And don't come down hard on me...I'm Black too!

C: Time is the Afro-Canadian guy who worked on Warhammer 40K.

at least, that's what my district manager refers to me as (well...afro-american in my case)

Oh come on - he just left out a few words from his point while in the middle of his thought. He clearly meant to say something along the lines of "These people are so poor, and so many of them are black."

Instead - with the camera rolling - he said "These people are so poor...and so black..."

He obviously isn't trying to say anything beyond this....

this is like a week old. I've heard so much funny stuff about it and radio host using it as funny sound bite that I don't care about it.

this'll get old real fast, though no doubt that was the intention.

I just really do not understand why black people who have been here for years and years and years in their families still wish to be called african-americans. Some are black, some are white. What's the harm in going by skin tone? nobody is denegrating anybody because of it. NOBODY here is really 'american' insofar as their actual bloodlines, as we're all immigrants in one form or another. Some of us are black, and were forced, some of us white, and willing. That's like the one common bond among people here... we're all American. Somewhere along the line our ancestors were either brought here or came here willingly, and when doing so, were forced to accept the loss of culture. This counterculture, so to speak, is wholly American, whether it's by residents in Canada (outside of Quebec), US, Mexico, or even South America to a lesser extent.

I guess I don't have a problem with the "african american" stuff, but if it gets to like "Angolan-Sudanese-American" for anyone who was already born here... then, uh... well I'll be beefin' some more. Sorry if I offended any of you.

It's an African American thing... you wouldn't understand.
