There has been another attempt to steal a cash machine using a digger.

A Bank of Ireland branch in Main Street, Keady, County Armagh, was rammed with the digger shortly after 0300 GMT on Wednesday.

However, the ATM was buried in the rubble and the thieves were unable to remove it.
A suspected getaway car, a silver Peugeot 406, was later found burnt out about 10 miles away over the border in Castleblaney, County Monaghan.

Local Sinn Fein MLA Cathal Boylan said the attempted robbery was an "attack on the community".

"Coming up to Christmas people need these services," he said.

"People in the town are shocked."

Since March, there have been 10 thefts of ATMs across Northern Ireland where the machines have been physically removed.

A number of the thefts - although not all - have involved the use of diggers or other heavy machinery.

There have also been a number of attempted thefts which have caused major damage to shops and banks.

No one has been charged in connection with any of the thefts.

A reward of up to £25,000 is being offered for anyone who can help catch the criminals targeting cash machines in Northern Ireland.

The money has been offered by Link, the operator of the UK's cash machine network.

You don't see that every day.

This happened at my local bank a few years ago - they really destroyed the building then, just rammed it with a JCB

It's actually MORE shocking that this doesn't happen more often.
It does over here (uk) I think this time last year thieves drove one up the highstreet, smashed it into bank and pulled out the machine and drove off with it :lol

Problem is - i think that the impact sets off ink that will cover all of the bank notes, making them useless at least that's what i remember being told when it happened near me

It's getting very common to see this in the US now. Most ATM's hold over 100k in cash, so they are easy picking if you the heavy machinery and the galls to try it. Not only that, it doesn't count as armed robbery, so if you do get caught, it's a lighter sentence.
