This is way intelligence in hiphop needs to return

Kanye is probably smarter than your favorite rapper. He's rich, he's the most influential man in the game in a decade, and he's married to the hottest woman on the planet. Your faves could NOT.

psshhhhh even Kanye know his flow aint nothin but a finger roll . Great producer though he knows what sound to go for on his tracks.

Huh? What did I say? Did I screw up again? :(
all these hip hop threads lately tho

Lets have more threads about what zany high jinx Justin Beiber pulled off this week or or whether beating off into a cake is a culinary act of terror or a biological warfare. It's certainly better than relevant discussions of a living sub-culture.

The real problem I have with rap is not the sound, but rather the lyrics and overall message. I'm not a prude, religious, or "save the kids" nut, but I'd say 98% of the shit that is produced these days is awful to listen to if you use your brain.
It's often hateful, racist, misogynist, elevates "thug life" and crime, the list goes on. The days of classic groups like Run-DMC and the Beastie Boys have passed, and in it's stead we have Kanye and Dre who are proclaimed "artists" because they use the medium for so called "social commentary" wrapped up in abhorrent lyrics (that nearly always fall into the aforementioned tropes).
[I should make a caveat for a guy like Macklemore who actually is trying to preach something worthwhile.]

Who the fuck is Macklemoore?

The guy that made the song about buying shitty clothes in thrift shops.

The real problem with Macklemoore is that, even though he has made good songs with good messages, the only ones that get bumped on the radio is the one where he raps about buying skeet blankets for 99 cents. No one cares about the message, they just want that banger.

Same Love gets played on the radio all the time.

You gotta link me to some shit because from what I googled dude sounds like an Atmosphere ripoff and frankly Atmosphere does it better.

Intelligent hiphop is saved all thanks to one very special white man! *sheds single tear*

Well Eminem's hardly in his prime anymore. We need a new great white hope.

No I kid, it's not as simple as that. It's hard to market lyrics that require people to think. Jessica Black had a song in the top 40's about Friday that literally made no sense, but people ate it up. It's the same thing here.

But intelligent hip hop hasn't gone away. It's just become slightly harder to find.

Switch Back 9

a lot of my threads involve me fucking up somehow. Perhaps I'm a moron?

I got nothing against Macklemore but Slug is on a whole other level. Plus he's been doing it for much, much longer.

Edit: people know Atmosphere is two dudes right?

Immortal Technique talks about some weird stuff sometimes. He might be a conspiracy theorist.
I do agree, though. Rap nowadays really blows.

I was reading a book on my porch literally just yesterday and some car was parked nearby.
The chorus of the song he was blaring was "My dick. My dick. My big and mighty dick." Or something to that effect. It made me think of the Mighty Ducks, though, so I wasn't too upset by it.

It's really weird to see twelve-year-olds singing about getting fucked up and fucking hoes, though.

I can't stand lazy shit like this, to be honest. I'm so tired of people listening to the radio and deciding to proselytize on the state of music - not just hip hop. There is so much artistic, conscious, introspection hip hop out there today. Yet you wouldn't know that because you just listened to the radio or some recommended video on Youtube. Let's be real: you wouldn't even know who Macklemore was if his song wasn't played a billion times this year.

How about you go listen to some hip hop beyond the radio. Hell, even mainstream rappers are more conscious than they were 5-6 years ago. You have no excuse.

Is it annoying to no one else that a traditionally black genre of music gets hit with all these complaints, and then Macklemore gets singled out as the great savior of the genre?

C'mon.

*sigh*

I see the strains of anti-intellectualism and jadedness are more prevalent than ever 'round these parts. Nothing to see here.

The Great White Hope

It's common. It works best when they get people who know what they're talking about and stand for something people can get behind but...yeah.

All you need to know about Immortal Technique:

He likes Alex Jones.

alex_jones_lizardmanagsgx_zps206cac09.gif

WTF are you talking about? You're dismissing Technique outright because he's willing to have discussions with Alex Jones? Are you that daft?

I have never heard anyone refer to his music as catchy. He is a technically shitty rapper…

That may have been true in his early career but today his technical aptitude is on par with current standards at the very least.

I'm convinced these OT hip-hop threads are made to troll GAF-Hop. Linking to Immortal Tech, more "95%+ of hip-hop is _______" posts....this has to be done purposely.

There's plenty of perfectly "intelligent" (as if making not specifically politically charged music doesn't also require intelligence) socially conscious hip hop out there right now, as there has always been.

Nah, he is still ass. Just not as ass as before.

This thread made me search recent hip hop albums for 2013.

How the fuck did I miss a new Ghostface album? I must correct this immediately.

Well it happens with anything traditionally black. I mean the number of people I've had tell me that Adele saved soul music just makes me hate people. Or how Amy Winehouse was one the greatest neosoul artists ever...bitch ain't even NeoSoul. Or how Justin Timberlake is the best R&B artist of all time. Great white hope every.single.fucking.time.

I really want to start trolling country-gaf and tell them that Darius Rucker is the best country singer of all time. Finally...a country singer with something to actually say.
