Sometimes I see electrical outlets with the little switches inbetween the sockets, usually in bathrooms.

I think they say "Reset" or something and they can be pushed in or out.

What do they do?

In case us pesky girls drop one of our electrical hair machines in the sink or bathtub.

You are supposed to push "test" every so often to see if it is actually working. If you push "test" and then the outlet doesn't work it means the safety is working. And then you have to push "reset" to turn the outlet back on.

Not sure where to post this. But, Did anyone's favicons on your tab for Gaf disappear?( in Firefox)
Is there a way to get them back? It's just on Gaf though other sites have them!

I've had that happen to me before a few times, and it fixed itself.

Since it was a nice day out I went out on a walk with a friend. we found a bunch of bones where some animal got killed. couldnt tell what it was though. I did take a picture of the vertebra. anyone know what the animal could be?

Hey Photo-GAF, how to I take cool pictures?

What I mean are pictures like these:
*enters pick-ups thread, grabs a couple of random pictures*

and pretty much everything in this post
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=21133309&postcount=230

I like how the camera focuses on a certain spot and everything else is blurred out.
The closest I've ever gotten to taking a picture like this is this:

Linked for huge.

Is there a trick to getting a good shot?
How do I do this?

I was watching the Samsung jet presentation on youtube, with something that looked like SF holograms (like the fancy transparent 3D views in Iron Man 2 or Bones). I don't care about the phone, but the presentation was really impressive.

How does that work exactly ? I didn't even know it was so advanced...

YOU DISCOVERED AN ALIEN LIFE FORM!

[Spoiler]I have no idea. It's too blurry. :([/Spoiler]

[QUOTE=DualShadow]Why does it keep showing the entire forum as read? :([/QUOTE]
It's a bug in the forum. I don't think it's been fixed yet.

So I've heard about people in prison being released like 20 years later because new dna evidence comes out or something which proves them innocent. My question is, how the heck does this happen? 20 years later? how?

Simple. The legal system often cares as much about expediency as justice.

Disregard my previous question, I have a real one.

Will it hurt my DS to "overcharge" it by leaving it on the charger all night or will it shut off once it's fully charged?

I leave my DS on charging for months at a time. It's still working fine and I haven't noticed any difference in battery time.

Cool, thanks. I was just worried that it might explode if I let it charge overnight.

What does ITT and LTTP mean in the long version?

In This Topic and Late To The Party.

Well, fist off, this depends on the kind of camera you're using. With a DSLR it's much easier to get this effect. With a compact camera you can get this using a large aperture (= small aperture value such as 2.8 or 3.5) and zooming in. BTW, the blurring effect is called bokeh.

That effect is called shallow depth-of-field. If your camera has an Av (aperture priority) setting, use that and set it for the lowest number possible. That way your camera will use a wide opening (f-stop) inside the lens and automatically set the shutter speed accordingly. Only the area that you focus on will be sharp and anything in front or behind will blur out.

Do you know the answer to my buddy mak's question below too? :)

Hi dallow :D

In a similar vein to this I was doing some bathroom pondering myself ... I wonder why they have those red lights (heat lamps?) in bathrooms at beach hotels?
Hiyo!

So I just kinda read a big spoiler. If I get drunk tonight, will the spoiler be forgotten the next morning?

Serious question.

No, not unless you drink enough to give yourself severe brain damage.

Hopefully some Linux people out there can help me out.

Can you have a desktop environment that usually packs its own window manager, and use it with a different window manager? Would there be a point to that? For example, GNOME is packing with Compiz currently, right? What if I wanted to use GNOME with Fluxbox, or something? Does any of what I just asked make sense? I'm not even new to Linux or anything, but never seriously and heavily customized a Linux distro before, and none of my friends know more than I do about this (so GAF, you are my only hope!).

Edit: Actually, some googling came up with information/answers to the above. Old information, but I think I know where to go from here with that stuff. Still, according to the Gaf search, the last distro discussion happened several years ago, so some updated opinions would be cool.

While I'm at it, if I did want to heavily customize the look of my distro (honestly, by and large most of the distros I play around with seem the same internally, as I tend to like debian-type distros like Ubuntu, Linux Mint, etc), which would be a good distro to go with? I've used Ubuntu, Linux Mint, CrunchBang...was thinking of trying Fedora, ArchLinux sounds cool but I had trouble getting it bootable off of my USB (since I'm doing this to my netbook) so put that on hold...just wondering what the general consensus is for distros (given my questions above).

i just installed WP-DBManager yesterday and it puts a note at the top of wordpress saying "Your backup folder MIGHT be visible to the public. To correct this issue, move the .htaccess file to a different directory. the only htaccess file i saw was htaccess.txt and so i moved to where it said i should but the message is still up there. is it going to be up there forever or is it waiting for me to do something else? when i click on the backup db it says everything is excellent and good to go

How do i lower my GPU fan speed through Ubuntu. I installed the latest version and the GPU fan is annoyingly loud. IN windows i use smartdoctor to lower the speed but can't find anything like that for Ubuntu. I'm on the latest release of Ubuntu (10.4 i think) and have an ASUS EAH4850.

What kind of equipment is necessary for a podcast? Would I need a studio or just mics plugged into a computer in a regular room?

Hiyo!

I have never been to a beach hotel, but I have seen heat-lamps in hotels that were older. I just thought they were a feature that was discontinued. So...I have no idea.

Pretty much just mics on a computer, and a litle common sense when it comes to background noise.

And for god sakes edit the podcast down to what you feel is just right, then see if you can trim off an additional 10-15% of your podcast. You know you've edited the podcast correctly when you're convinced that you're leaving some pretty good material on the cutting room floor, so to speak.

Remember, all of the production equipment in the world won't make a turd any less turdy. Generally editing is more important than equipment.

What's a good way to get into character animation?

I know there's schools and things, but any cheap or free resources someone could recommend to get me started/see if I like it?

i'm trying to find a quote, not sure who said, not sure exactly how it goes, but the gist is this:

in america, they tear down their landmarks and history, in other countries they preserve them

I'm not really a camera guy so I'm not sure whether my camera is a DSLR or a compact or whatever, but it's called a Sony DSC-H2.

I switched it to Aperture Priority mode, and changed the number from 3.5 (the lowest) to 8.0 (the highest) and took the same picture using both modes, but I can't really see a difference. Is there some sort of trick to getting the correct angle or something? Does using flash affect the outcome?

That is ATI Card right? Radeon 4850?

Try (in terminal)

Code:
aticonfig --list-powerstates

aticonfig --set-powerstate=x
Where x is a number off that list.

How can I cure my internet addiction so I don't fuck this whole semester up? :(
Maybe like as soon as you get home from school try to stay away from the roon your computers in, and just get started on homework/studying (if you don't have a job). I'm also trying to cut down on internet time next semester.

Here is my question: My sister broke the flap part off an old VHS tape that has alot of families memories on it. Anyone know if it would be possible to somehow fix this?
