What does it mean to "jump" somebody?

Ex: "I don't want to go to school today because I think I am going to get "jumped" by my enemy."

Gang of people attacking a person out of nowhere.

How do you calculate the driving distances between two ZIP codes using Google Maps/Earth?
Specifically, how would you go searching distances using a pair of two-digit ZIP codes Germany wider areas? (e.g. driving distance between 57 and 04).

Google search results yield scripts and other fancy stuff I don't need.

I got robbed while running a few hours ago. I've already had verizon suspend service to the phone, but assuming its still powered on, would they be able to locate it?

they could probably triangulate it a few hundred meters exact or so.

Oh my god PLEASE HELP, MIDTERM TOMORROW

How do I get sin, cos and tan to work on a SHARP EL-520W calculator? All the other buttons work except those, and all documentation on the internet simply states "just press sin, then the number." When I do press one of those buttons, nothing at all comes out.

I don't have this calculator, but did you try to press the buttons in reverse order?
like 2, sin gives you sin(2).

alternatively, if you can program it, you could re-program the cos and sin function :)

That's the Texas Instrument way of doing things, this calculator does things the opposite way. The problem is literally NOTHING happens for those buttons.

Who's the girl on the right? I recognize her from something and it's been bothering me for a while.

Also, there's a blooper involving Kate Winslet where she randomly runs around set to everyone's astonishment. I can't remember what it's from though. I thought it was extra's but haven't been able to find it.

Hey GAF, is there a website where I can say for example enter the name of two films, and it will tell me what cast they have in common?

Say I enter Mean Streets and Taxi Driver, it would tell me Harvey Keitel and Robert De Niro for example? Hopefully TV shows, maybe even episode specific?

If not I'd like someone on GAF to build me this.

Just so the model number doesn't scare people away, I'm pretty sure this applies to all SHARP scientific calculators.

A quick search says you need to hit the m1 or mode button and then 0-6 to chose the proper mode (0 1 2 3 4 5 6 (SD) (LINE) (QUAD) (EXP) (LOG) (PWR) (INV)). No clue if that works or helps.

My girlfriend uses her cell phone a lot and I want to get her a headset to avoid the harmful radiation, but her cellphone doesn't have a headset jack. Is a bluetooth headset safer?

What would happen if a planet was cut in half? Say there was a small planet (e.g. the same size as America for reference) and a trench was cut all the way around like an apple core:

This is more exaggerated than I mean but this is the idea:
applecore11.jpg

The closer to the core the trench got, the weaker the plant would be...what would happen eventually?

Random question, I know. I was falling asleep last night and it popped into my head.

At some point during excavating that trench, the gravitational pull between the sides would pull them together and in a couple of million years you'd have a perfectly round planet again for the same reason that all decently sized planets and moons are round.

EDIT: And if we're talking smaller than decently sized, the parts would probably be fucked up by some other planet's gravitational field and everything'd go to hell.

Just started a lttp to the wire, whats the opening song name ? or is it original to the wire?
It's by Tom Waits, every season has a different singer of it. Waits does the second season I believe.

EDIT: Forgot to post the title sorry, it's 'way down in the hole'.

Audio-question:

I have the Sennheiser HD 555 headphones and Logitech Speakers. The speakers are connected to my TV and when I connect my headphones to the speakers, the volume is pretty low. When I now crank up the volume on my TV my headphones get louder, but the sound also gets shittier. Is there any way to "fix" this problem? Can't really describe what happens, because I don't know much about audio-stuff. :/

how exactly does a car battery recharge itself if you never plug it in? Something to do with gas?

As the car engine runs, it spins the alternator and in turn, the alternator charges the battery - much like a wind-up light, but on a larger and more powerful scale.

Why am i browsing GAF at school? This is awful. I keep having to fake-cough to cover up laughter.

I am so dumb.
Seriously, you'd think you'd eventually learn better, but that never happens... I am also so dumb...

At what age should a person finally accept that all their hopes and dreams are unobtainable and settle for whatever they can get and try to be happy?

who is 'Costanza' and why do some people seem to love him and some people hate him?

He's a rather infamous poster in both the OT and gaming side for many... interesting threads. A scan through his post history should give you an idea of why.

Does anyone know how to turn off the god awful text filtering in Minefield? It's like it's trying to anti-alias the whole browser and I can't look at it for more than 5 minutes without developing a headache from the blur =(

Oh man I can't stand that blur crap in IE. I hope that doesn't come to the next version of Firefox.

There's this fake commercial of Darth Vader going into his son's room (just a normal kid in this, not Luke) and finding a lightsaber, then they argue and the boy says something along the lines of "I learned it from you!!" and it ends with a message like "Jedi uses lightsabers, son of Jedis use lightsabers". I'm failing to find it on youtube, anyone has a link?

Probably a stupid question, but why is public transportation called that if people who uses it has to pay fare, as opposed to free access and supported by taxes from everyone? Would Greyhound buses then be considered public transportation in the way that city buses and trolleys are? :?

I think it depends on who owns the transport. Ie it's public transport because the government "owns" it.

Greyhound as far as I know is privately owned.

Good point though.

Yeah... about that "post history" feature thing...
GAF really isn't the same without it. So much lulz and understanding a couple of clicks could bring.

It's public in the sense that anyone can get on at any time, money being the only provision. And even then, with municipally owned services, the fee is usually very reasonable because it is supported by taxes. Greyhound is not considered public in terms of its ownership but it is considered public transportation.
