How did Bethesda manage to cram all of that recorded dialogue on a single DVD for

Fallout 3? You say, “simple silly, they just compress it.” And that’s where I get lost. If I

listen to a CD and then a 256 AAC of the same album I can immediately distinguish

between the two. Now obviously this is because I have a frame of reference in the original

CD that I don’t have with the audio in Fallout. If however I drop the conversion to 128

kbps, even without hearing the original CD I can tell right away it’s a low bitrate file. So if

Bethesda were to take all that recorded dialogue and reduce it all the way down to 128kps

files, even then I doubt they’d be able to cram all of that onto a DVD, especially with

everything else that needs to be on that disc and I’d be able to tell it was heavily

compressed, just as I can with the dialogue in Fable 2. So what I’m saying is, how did

they manage to get all that audio on a DVD without it sounding horribly compressed?

Do you notice how incredibly wank the audio quality is on movies on DVDs?

It's just compressed to fuck.

Oh shit, that reminds me I have another question. I was thinking about how much better multiplatform games sound on the PS3 vs. their 360 counterparts. So then I thought, “I can’t wait for the next gen of consoles, then everything will sound great across the board”. Then I thought, oh wait, maybe they won’t. A large part of what makes that possible is the storage capacity of bluray. But what are the odds any of the next batch of machines will use it? Slim to none I’d say. So that then leaves us with DVD’s or digital distribution. So if everything goes dd in the next gen, will developers go ahead and use that extra hdd space or will they feel it’s in the consumer’s best interest to keep the game’s audio in fidelity check for the sake of HDD space and bandwidth?

So here are my questions again.

1. How did Bethesda manage to get all that recorded dialogue on a DVD without it sounding horribly compressed as seen in Fable 2?
2. If the next gen of consoles all have HDMI and go digital distribution only, will the audio quality be like what we’re experiencing now with PS3 games on bluray or will the developers opt to conserve hdd space at the expense of the audio?

The throttle linkage is sticking in my 1990 Jeep Cherokee. Where's a good place to start lubing? The All the under-the-hood linkage was kinda cruddy so I sprayed it with some pb blaster, but I'm still getting some stickiness in the idle.

I disagree, the br parts have already come down a ton and we're still several years away from the next batch, maybe Microsoft will opt for DVD or DD or something else, but I really can't see Sony not trying again, if they were insane enough the first time to include when br parts were sky high, why not do it again when the parts are so cheap by the time PS4 launches

1, it's very compressed, that's it, there is no secret, your hearing is probably pretty bad.
2, RAM is still the number one issue without question, disc capacity doesn't even come into it yet really.

If size isn't an issue, check out M-Audio

For something a little smaller (but still very good for comp speakers) the Creative T40 and T20 sets.

Wrench-Gaf is all over in different threads. You might have better luck joining a forum for your particular vehicle.

I would hit the cruddy outside shit with the car wash and bring it down to metal as best you can. Then I would use the PB to get it moving well and finish it all off with some Tri-flow. It is like WD-40 but I have had better results with it.

Why do women scream, cry and sometimes faint when they see a celebrity? For example, celebs like Elvis or the Beatles. The screaming I can almost understand since they're excited or want to be heard (however stupid that is... they're in a crowd of 10,000 other women!) but why the crying and the fainting?

There's a setting under piano sounds in garage band called "metropolis". Is there any freeware vst that replicates this? Long shot of a question.

Also I think we have a thread for this, but not sure. There is a song with the lyrics "what a feelin" or "what I'm feelin" in the chorus. It's a fairly recent song. It's not the one from flash dance or anything like that. Any ideas?

hi, need some medi-gaf advice.

I had a root canal a couple days ago, and today it was hurting like crazy when all of a sudden the part of the gum that was operated on went completely numb. Fast forward a few hours, now my mouth looks absolutely ridicoulously swollen on my upper lip to the point that I can't really breathe through my nose. Did I mention I look ridiculous?

My dentist doesn't open till the day after tomorrow, and my question is if I go to the emergency room tonight or in the morning, can they do anything about my swelling? I've tried warm salt water, cold/warm compresses, the whole nine yards. Halp?

I assume the crying and or fainting is just a reaction to over-excitement. The crying isn't much different from someone who is hysterical or very happy. If you're wondering why it doesn't usually happen with men, I would guess that is due to difference in brain chemistry between the two sexes.

I don't specifically know anything about the Fallout 3 solution, but a few things to keep in mind:
* Most rips from a CD would be stereo. But dealing in speech tends to be mono, so you can get away with a lower bitrate since it's literally half the number of tracks.
* There are various audio compression types, some of which are optimized for speech.

How do you iron your clothes? Do you press firmly or let it glide softly?!

Let the steam and the natural weight of the iron do the work; pressing down on it can, more often than not, lead to accidentally creasing the clothing. If you're trying to iron something that's really wrinkled, put a damp towel underneath it and then iron it like normal.

How do people with no legs that work are able to drive?

There's a special car modified for them. I believe people that are paralyzed from the waist down make use of them, too.

If I recall correctly, the accelerator and brake are buttons on the steering wheel.

Is there a website somewhere that is focused on analysing fiction books? I just finished reading The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, but I'm left confused on certain aspects. There's just a lot of loose ends I'd love to see some explanations or opinions of. I've googled, but can only find some very superficial summaries of it.

Has anyone ever seen the adult film Caligula?

The recent wanking thread made me wonder if there was actually any really high quality porn, Caligula is the biggest budget adult film ever made and has a number of A list hollywood stars in it. I assume it's not actually a porn film.

Not really a question, more of a request, nonetheless it doesn't deserve its own thread.

I am at work, and I want to burn an image of ubuntu 9.10, its a iso format, and I wanted to download imgburn, but it wont let me since I am not logged in as an administrator. Can one of you guys or gals who already have imgburn, zip (not rar, since we dont have winrar here) the already extracted imgburn from your "My Programs" and upload it. thanks

Are you sure the computer will let you install it, if you don't have admin rights?

The porn scenes were filmed apart from the main movie with other actors and the producer included them. Most of them at the orgy in the end. Tinto Brass did never wanted to include them but he had no choice over it.

So it was a normal movie, maybe a little extreme, but not porn. Until the producer got his hands on it.

And for the quality porn question:

Pirates and Pirates 2, both on Blue Ray :D

I want some 360 games but have no idea what to get. I have no problem with used games and have about $25. What should I get?

*and are there any official 360 recommendation threads?

Question for someone good with iTunes: Is there a Windows program that will let me add podcasts I downloaded outside of iTunes so they show up in "Podcasts" instead of Music?

Basically, I'm looking for a Windows equivalent to Typecast for the Mac. I found a real kludge of a solution in this old blog post but suck at writing functioning RSS feeds.

Why do my slacks have:

Code:
Button metal fastener button hole
Button hole metal fastener button
?

Obviously I can attach both buttons and the metal fastener (and the zipper), but I usually just go with the main (center) button and the metal fastener. Is the design just to spread the tension across multiple points (and thus, keep your buttons attached longer)? If so, why not just include the extra button? Why the need for the extra flap + button hole? Even the metal fastener seems to be a bit much. The pair I'm currently wearing is just button + zipper.

What's the best program to use for re-sizing images?
photoshop, but it's not exactly affordable :(

here's a solution from the FAQ forum, I haven't tried it, but it could work well:

Hey freeloaders and internet smegheads, if you haven't noticed by now, in the TOS (you know the document we ask you to read when you register) it clearly states the max avatar size is 90x120x150kb.

The forum automatically resizes all avatars to be 90 pixels in width. This may be something that hasn't been made clear to everyone, but this causes alot of avatars to be resized over the limit.

Avatars over the limit may lead to a ban, or permanently gimped avatar privileges.

Since I'm a nice guy and I realize not everyone has photoshop heres a nice little free program you can use to resize your avatar!

The Gimp:
http://www.gimp.org/

This is a semi-powerful tool that you can use to do all sorts of fun things with images, including joining in on those HILARIOUS photoshop competitions. Oh and hey! look at that! You can download and use this program on linux, unix, windows, AND MACOSX! Huzzah!

If youre new to photo editing, and since my patience is totally worn out, I'm going to give you guys a brief tutorial on how to use The gimp as it isnt a very user friendly program to people who arent used to image editing.

First, download the GTk2.8.18 installer, then the actual gimp installer. This will take care of all the stuff you need to get Gimp up and running.

This is the place you wanna get it from
http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html

Note that it even has an animation package! Yes you too can make animated gifs! If you want to resize your humungloid animated gif avatar most likely you'll need to download that.

BY THE WAY THIS TUTORIAL IS FOR PC, BUT I SUSPECT ALL VERSIONS OF THE PROGRAM ARE THE SAME AND USE THE SAME ENGLISH WORDS

The left window will be your TOOOOLSSSS, stuff you can use to edit the image you want.

On the right you have info such as history, brushes, and layer options.

What you want to do is resize your image, so on the left window click File/open then click the file you want to open. VOILA! you have your image!

guiul9.png

Now next thing you want to do is decide wether or not you just want to cut one part out of the pic or just resize it whole.

For examples sake we will do the CROP then RESIZE so I can show you guys how to do both.

So to make a crop first you are going to want to tell the program what you want to crop. Do this by selecting either of the first three (rectangle, elipse or lasso) tools and enclosing the portion of the image you want to keep.

After doing this, click on the window that contains your image and go to the menu image/crop. Huzzah! you have successfully cropped an image!

Now youve cropped your image and the shit is still too big. Well solving this problem is rather easy. Go to your image window and click on the image menu then go to "scale image." This will bring up a dialog with some image size info n stuff.

Whatever you do, make sure the WIDTH is 90 PIXELS. Enter 90 pixel width and then single click the height to automatically adjust according to the aspect ratio. Now if you get to this step and you see that your height is OVER 120 you can do 2 things to fix it. 1. Crop it tighter. or 2. turn off aspect ratio by clicking the little chain so that it looks broken, and simply resize 90x120.

Then save your image using SAVE AS!

Image saving tips: Be smart, If you have a black and white image, using a low bit\color png or gif is perfect. Gifs are also great for images of classic games that dont have alot of color. JPGs are best for photos and stuff like that. Around 75% compression is recommended for jpegs.

To save as another file type just click on the "select file type" option in the save as window and go through the steps.

I wont go too much into detail, but experiment and find the best combination of image quality and size for yourself. Please be considerate and make your images as small in size as possible. Note: the image in this thread is only 40k!

IMAGE HOSTING WAOOOOO

Okay so where the **** should you put your image?
Well there are plenty of image hosting places, one of which is actually gaf friendly!

http://www.strangereaction.com/imagehost/ <--gaf friendly, good for hosting your crappy anigifs

or

photobucket: www.photobucket.com

Now there is no excuse. Resize your god damned avatars!
