Do you notice how incredibly wank the audio quality is on movies on DVDs?Gouty said:How did Bethesda manage to cram all of that recorded dialogue on a single DVD for
Fallout 3? You say, simple silly, they just compress it. And thats where I get lost. If I
listen to a CD and then a 256 AAC of the same album I can immediately distinguish
between the two. Now obviously this is because I have a frame of reference in the original
CD that I dont have with the audio in Fallout. If however I drop the conversion to 128
kbps, even without hearing the original CD I can tell right away its a low bitrate file. So if
Bethesda were to take all that recorded dialogue and reduce it all the way down to 128kps
files, even then I doubt theyd be able to cram all of that onto a DVD, especially with
everything else that needs to be on that disc and Id be able to tell it was heavily
compressed, just as I can with the dialogue in Fable 2. So what Im saying is, how did
they manage to get all that audio on a DVD without it sounding horribly compressed?

Gouty said:Oh shit, that reminds me I have another question. I was thinking about how much better multiplatform games sound on the PS3 vs. their 360 counterparts. So then I thought, I cant wait for the next gen of consoles, then everything will sound great across the board. Then I thought, oh wait, maybe they wont. A large part of what makes that possible is the storage capacity of bluray. But what are the odds any of the next batch of machines will use it? Slim to none Id say. So that then leaves us with DVDs or digital distribution. So if everything goes dd in the next gen, will developers go ahead and use that extra hdd space or will they feel its in the consumers best interest to keep the games audio in fidelity check for the sake of HDD space and bandwidth?
So here are my questions again.
1. How did Bethesda manage to get all that recorded dialogue on a DVD without it sounding horribly compressed as seen in Fable 2?
2. If the next gen of consoles all have HDMI and go digital distribution only, will the audio quality be like what were experiencing now with PS3 games on bluray or will the developers opt to conserve hdd space at the expense of the audio?
1, it's very compressed, that's it, there is no secret, your hearing is probably pretty bad.Gouty said:1. How did Bethesda manage to get all that recorded dialogue on a DVD without it sounding horribly compressed as seen in Fable 2?

The screaming I can almost understand since they're excited or want to be heard (however stupid that is... they're in a crowd of 10,000 other women!) but why the crying and the fainting?
I don't specifically know anything about the Fallout 3 solution, but a few things to keep in mind:Gouty said:How did Bethesda manage to cram all of that recorded dialogue on a single DVD for Fallout 3?

sprsk said:Hey freeloaders and internet smegheads, if you haven't noticed by now, in the TOS (you know the document we ask you to read when you register) it clearly states the max avatar size is 90x120x150kb.
The forum automatically resizes all avatars to be 90 pixels in width. This may be something that hasn't been made clear to everyone, but this causes alot of avatars to be resized over the limit.
Avatars over the limit may lead to a ban, or permanently gimped avatar privileges.
Since I'm a nice guy and I realize not everyone has photoshop heres a nice little free program you can use to resize your avatar!
The Gimp:
http://www.gimp.org/
This is a semi-powerful tool that you can use to do all sorts of fun things with images, including joining in on those HILARIOUS photoshop competitions. Oh and hey! look at that! You can download and use this program on linux, unix, windows, AND MACOSX! Huzzah!
If youre new to photo editing, and since my patience is totally worn out, I'm going to give you guys a brief tutorial on how to use The gimp as it isnt a very user friendly program to people who arent used to image editing.
First, download the GTk2.8.18 installer, then the actual gimp installer. This will take care of all the stuff you need to get Gimp up and running.
This is the place you wanna get it from
http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html
Note that it even has an animation package! Yes you too can make animated gifs! If you want to resize your humungloid animated gif avatar most likely you'll need to download that.
BY THE WAY THIS TUTORIAL IS FOR PC, BUT I SUSPECT ALL VERSIONS OF THE PROGRAM ARE THE SAME AND USE THE SAME ENGLISH WORDS
The left window will be your TOOOOLSSSS, stuff you can use to edit the image you want.
On the right you have info such as history, brushes, and layer options.
What you want to do is resize your image, so on the left window click File/open then click the file you want to open. VOILA! you have your image!
![]()
Now next thing you want to do is decide wether or not you just want to cut one part out of the pic or just resize it whole.
For examples sake we will do the CROP then RESIZE so I can show you guys how to do both.
So to make a crop first you are going to want to tell the program what you want to crop. Do this by selecting either of the first three (rectangle, elipse or lasso) tools and enclosing the portion of the image you want to keep.
After doing this, click on the window that contains your image and go to the menu image/crop. Huzzah! you have successfully cropped an image!
Now youve cropped your image and the shit is still too big. Well solving this problem is rather easy. Go to your image window and click on the image menu then go to "scale image." This will bring up a dialog with some image size info n stuff.
Whatever you do, make sure the WIDTH is 90 PIXELS. Enter 90 pixel width and then single click the height to automatically adjust according to the aspect ratio. Now if you get to this step and you see that your height is OVER 120 you can do 2 things to fix it. 1. Crop it tighter. or 2. turn off aspect ratio by clicking the little chain so that it looks broken, and simply resize 90x120.
Then save your image using SAVE AS!
Image saving tips: Be smart, If you have a black and white image, using a low bit\color png or gif is perfect. Gifs are also great for images of classic games that dont have alot of color. JPGs are best for photos and stuff like that. Around 75% compression is recommended for jpegs.
To save as another file type just click on the "select file type" option in the save as window and go through the steps.
I wont go too much into detail, but experiment and find the best combination of image quality and size for yourself. Please be considerate and make your images as small in size as possible. Note: the image in this thread is only 40k!
IMAGE HOSTING WAOOOOO

I use IrfanView. Photoshop and the GIMP are overkill if all you're doing is resizing. They take a long time to load up.mario ate my burger said:What's the best program to use for re-sizing images?
