When I was young, I was told never to charge a battery until it was completely dead. Charging a half-strength battery would degrade it's charge life in the future.

Is there any truth to that? I've always waited until the last minute to charge my cell phones but I just picked up my first smartphone. Under normal usage I get about 24 hours per charge so I'm afraid to kill any more battery life. I don't want to have to charge this thing multiple times a day.

Yeah, I've always wondered what made most BBC shows look different than American TV. They just have a different look I can't put my finger on.

It depends on the battery. Most newer ones let you charge at any point with no loss in performance.

WHy don't broadcast channels use their subchannels properly?

Example: HD radio. The rock station offers all 80s music in their substation.
HD television. ABC offers the weather. All the time.

Why not use the substation for something useful? My local NBC runs a sports channel (US Sports) 24-7 in their substation. But no other network does.

Don't think this question is stupid, but it doesn't deseve its own thread (not that I can make one anyway).

Does the cache on a hard drive have any real importance? I'm asking since I'm planning on buying one and wondering if it is worth spending a little more money on one with 64 mb cahce vs one with 32 mb cache?

AFAIK, those channels are only available OTA, not on cable or other similar services. It probably isn't worth the effort to put much thought into the programming.

My lovely friend just dropped out of going to a concert with me. Unfortunately, she was also my ride. I figured I could always try to sell them, but 1. it's not in this state and 2. I don't have a credit card to sort it online.

What should I do with my tickets? They're digital, so can just be printed off I guess. I'm thinking of just putting them up for someone on GAF to go, but it feels like such a waste of $73, doubly so considering my lack of job :(

Can't you go into properties and set when the tray icons appear? I remember a window that says "only when active" and "never", etc.

Stupid question to which I have no clue of the answer:

Can I work for two employers (part-time) at once if they both sell the same (or even similar/overlapping) products or services? Obviously, if I could secure a ton more hours at one, I'd dump the other, but that's just not how most retail jobs are now. So many retailers are slashing hours that you can't even begin to approach full-time hours with them unless you're management.

I'm in Toronto, Canada, if it makes a difference. Is there a labour law of conflicting interests or something that prevents me from doing this, assuming I'm otherwise smart about things (avoiding shift schedule conflicts and not expressly informing either store's management where exactly my other job is, or that I even have another job -- or are they required by law to know this information, and am I required by law to divulge it?)

I just can't imagine the law nailing this down perfectly, since there must be many instances where the two stores' wares aren't identical, but there's some overlap, and tons of people keep two or three jobs to make it by.

Let's use, as an example, Canadian Tire and Wal-Mart as the two stores (those aren't the two stores in my case). Could I pull 15 hours a week or whatever at each of those, and be right by the law?

(this is assuming no confidentiality agreements are signed at the start of one's employment with either company)

(and I'm aware that even with nothing written down, if a manager discovered my second job and didn't like it, but couldn't fire me on those grounds alone, he or she could find or manufacture another reason to fire me)

Generally in retail (in my experience), if your employer finds out you're working for the competition, it's a choice of quitting the other job, or being fired from the first one. Sometimes it's a stretch, though... like for example, at the other anime store location, there was a guy who worked there, but he also worked at Gamestop. Gamestop said we were competition because we sold games and they sold anime. Never mind that we sold import games and they sold used anime, I guess.

I'd imagine you could probably fly under the radar so long as you weren't favoring either business, but I'm sure it's not illegal. Where you work is your own choice, isn't it?

Not sure about Canada, but it's only illegal in the US if you sign a non-compete clause. Of course most states are at-will anyway, so companies can fire you for almost any reason.

Hi guys, so the dictatorial goverment is establishing arbitrary electricity caps, and if you go over the cap you get double the $ in your next bill. Or some kind of monetary punishment, etc. Whatever.

I google the shit out of this and still don't get it, say my refrigerator consumes "170w" that's what the label says. Or the PC supposedly consumes "190w", what the hell does this mean? 190w an hour? 190w a month?, we're not supposed to go over 500kw/month, so please can someone help me with this?

The way it works for me (maybe the whole US as far as I know)

You're power company charges you per KWH which means per Kilowatt-Hour. So you use the simple formula

((Watts x Hours Used) / 1000) x Cost per kilowatt-hour = Total

So if a light bulb uses 100W, and your cost is 50 cent a KWH then it would cost you 5 cents to run that light bulb for a straight hour.

Basically, you should have a meter outside your place. The meter has a dial that spins around as you use electricity. The more you use the faster it spins, the faster it spins then the faster it fills up. In your case when you reach 500Kw you'll start getting charged extra for every KW you consume per hour.

I have all of the boxes unticked but it won't go away. Tried a restart too.

Watt is the amount of energy used by the device per second. (more exact, the rate of energy conversion) This means that when your fridge uses 190 W, it consumes energy equal to 190 Joule/second.
You probably aren't supposed to go over 500 kWh (kilowatt hour) per month, which is the amount of energy that a device with 500 kW uses in one hour. I'm no physicist though, so this might not be 100% correct.

e/ Beaten. :o

Yoho, can anyone help me out, i'm looking for a music video.

I just know the clip, nothing about the song except for that it was a poppy rock song.

The video started out with a band playing on the ground on a grassfield in a place between apartments. During the song all kinds of people were watching the band from the windows/balconies. After a while the band started lifting up and turning round and at the end they we're flying in the sky.

Wondering if there's a program the lets me monitor my internet usage between different processes, and display some sort of per-minute history. Want to check for sudden usage spikes.

In this video; http://vimeo.com/8569187

After they put the kettle on, they pull down a recipe browser and it plays a little sound clip. Like bwiiiiiiiing.

It's from some popular game, maybe on iPhone or a casual flash game or something, and I recognise it but can't put my finger on it. Any idea?

I'm going to NYC on 26th July to 5th of August. What sporting events can I see when I'm there? What seasons will be underway? NFL,NBA,MLB,MLS........

QUICK!

I sent my teacher an email with an attachment. it's MS Office Word, but the teacher said he couldn't open it. He said I need to send it in word format.

I only have MS Office and that's it. Any other way of sending the file to him?

I'm guessing you have Office 2007 and sent him a *.docx file. Open the file and use File > Save As to save as a *.doc file (Word 2003 compatibility mode). Then e-mail the *.doc file.

You should then configure Word to use *.doc by default so you don't have to do it again in the future.

If you're using an older version of Office, then either something weird is going on with your file in-transit (i.e. Word macro virus, or something stupid like you left off the file extension when you created the file), or your teacher fails at the internet.

Maybe you have a newer version of word? You can either try re-saving it as 2003 or something or maybe try PDF?

Posted this in the fitness thread but i may aswell double up;

Is it normal for someone to just not be very hungry? I don't eat alot, by simple virtue of not being that hungry, its kind of the last thing on my mind so often ill forget to have meals or eat once a day. The reason this is relevant to this thread is more along the lines of i want to get into some serious gym routines but the notion of eating 3-4k calories a day is...well its kind of a mountain for someone who doesn't eat the "recommended" intake. Ive tried at various intervals to regulate but i cant really force myself to eat. Think this needs seeing to by a doctor?

For stats im 6ft, 24, male if any of that helps, also i walk an hour each day to and from work and have been for a good while so i get excercise.

MLB/MLS.

Yankees are home against Toronto on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of August. Mets are home against St Louis on the 27th, 28th, 29th of July, and against Arizona on the 30th, 31st of July, and the 1st of August

New York Red Bulls are away during your visit, but to see them would require a trip into New Jersey anyway.

Need some help, I think I might have messed with some font settings on accident or something, because I can no longer see 'special' characters in my browser for example.

Here are some weird looking things;

34fxztd.png

Title on Gizmodo (font never looked like that, notice odd O).

2nvz6lz.png

New Facebook format, can't see the symbol in between the view styles.

Any help fixing this? Thanks in advanced.

Are Mazda-style rotary engines more of a marketing gimmick more than anything else. I've always liked the modern RX-7s and the RX-8's looks are growing on me, so I was idly wondering why no other car company seems to put any effort into a pistol-less Mazda-style rotary. According to wikipedia the RX-8's engine won an award for international best engine in 2003 (I have no idea how prestigious this award is) and in '04/'05 it made an appearance on Ward's 10 Best Engines list of engines available in the U.S. (again no idea if this means anything).

Why does Mazda continue to use this design? Why do other companies ignore it?

Just ctrl+click quote on whoever you want to reply to, then copy paste them to a single tab/post. That's what I do anyway..

They should add a 'quote' button next to all the users below when posting.

Dear GAF: Are you able to sleep when you get an email saying your father has been admitted to the hospital with a thing that is blocking his windpipe and isn't responding to drugs?

If so, how? Could use some tips.

Since it's creation, the popcorn setting on microwaves continues to burn the shit out of said product by cooking it longer than intended leaving a smoldering bag of blackened inedible fluff and a lingering stench in it's wake. Question: Why the hell hasn't this feature been fixed yet?

Is the full schedule even out yet?

Funny, I asked pretty much the same question last week. :lol It's confusing shit, because we get charged in KW-hours but everything just says x watts with no indication of time-frame!

I'm in the mood for some good third person shooting, and am deciding between Resident Evil 5 and Dead Space. Which one would you recommend, I have not played either.

Dead Space if you're in the mood for a good horror game. Turn off the lights and Turn up the sound and it's a great time.

RE5 if you've got a partner to play with and you're down for a little cheesy fun story.

Both of them are pretty equal to me, Dead Space a great horror game, but has a little too much backtracking for my liking. RE5, not even a horror game to me, but it's a great big budget title. Really works better with a partner.

I never thought of it, but I'm coming to the realization that I'm a pretty vain person. There are times if I say something clever or witty in front of a group of people, I'll replay the event later on in my mind. Sometimes dozens of times, and then I'll toot my horn and say in mind "That was pretty damn smart/funny/clever..."

and then a few moments later after I realize I'm doing this, I'll chide myself with a comment like 'You're such a self absorbed idiot.....ahhhh"

Does this happen to anyone else?

That's not being vain, that's just being sure of yourself. There's nothing wrong with being happy about your accomplishments.

An example of being vain would be saying something smart/funny/clever and then thinking to yourself "hah, they'll probably never say something that smart" or "there's no way these idiots will understand my high-class jokes."
