keen. I'll try out the channel deal later tonight or tomorrow. The Ethernet cable going into my computer (the one I've been temporarily using on the system) is one of those 100 foot dealies. The main router for the internet is in my roommate's room, so this would be the second router the internet would be traveling through into either the 360 or the computer.
o, you can use a switch instead of a router fyi. don't see the point in having a modem -> router -> router setup. more so if the 2nd router isn't a bridge

That shouldn't be an issue, as there are plenty of recaps in the thread itself. I think the last one is on page 82, if you use 50 posts per page.

Has anybody attempted to reduce the size of an item of clothing they own... particularly an item which is 100% cotton.

I purchased a shirt a few months back, and thought the sizing was OK. But after a few wears of the item I felt the size is a tad large, I need to reduce it down one size really.

Apparently if you wash 100% cotton at a high temperature, and then tumble dry it then the size shrinks.

I'm not looking to ruin the item of clothing and make it a kids size, but attempt to move it down just one size.

Anyone had success with this?

Usually making it kids size is only possible with wool. You should be good. If it looks too small coming out of the washer, stretch it out a bit and let it dry on a hanger.

I've never seen a Bruce Campbell movie. I saw him in Spider-man and I've really been enjoying his character in Burn Notice, so I want to check out some of his older stuff. Is Evil Dead what's he's famous for? Anything else?

Well you can check this out, obviously: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0132257/

Sorry I can't be more help than that, though. Don't know the dude from Adam.

Thanks.

I guess I'll attempt it then. Was just worried because I bought the shirt for about £40-£50, and any chance of it being unwearable after shrinking is not one I want to take, as currently it dresses quite nicely with a jumper over the top...but not on its own.

Watch Evil Dead for sure. Then watch Evil Dead 2 for the laughs. Then watch Army of Darkness, my personal favorite, to be blown away! The 3 films form a loose trilogy.

Anyone handy with wireless connections here? We're having some problems with a laptop that is losing its connection at random intervals. Rebooting our router and wireless usually fix it of course but what the root problem is, is unknown :( For instance, an hour ago I had the laptop in my lap, two meters away from the access point, and it simply could not find it. But my psp could! The laptop did find two other access points though (our neighbours I assume), but couldn't connect to either.

As far as I know, my sis have not been tampering with any settings at all, and after unplugging the whole router for a bit, it worked again. For 10 minutes, then it died again. I'm at a loss here :S The lights for "wireless" and "internet" are blinking in weird patterns for no obvious reason. We're currently running without passwords but I can't remember why :lol Not sure if that could mean dropped connections at random, for random devices though.

While writing this, it seems to have fixed itself magically for the time being. Still, any ideas? Fixing another WEP is probably a good idea either way but it sure is a hassle to get running (for some reason, it's not possible to make an unsecured network secured again without changing the settings via a "hardline" connection).

I always recommend changing the channel settings from 6 to either 11 or 1. When you plug your laptop to the router does it work? it could be your router is not refreshing it self with a new IP.

I haven't tried but I'm confident that it'd work just fine. Wouldn't I have the same problem on my ps3 and psp if it has ip refreshing issues?

I have another question :D Completely unrelated. You know those sounds a tv (and electronics in general I think?) make if they've been running hot for a while and you turn them off? It sounds like hard plastic bent out of shape that sort of snaps back into its preferred form. Sort of like how hot engines in a car make weird noises while cooling down? Anyway, I hear this sound from my tv every night when I try to sleep. And almost every time I hear it, I get these weird flashes across my presumedly closed eyelids. Why is that? xD Is it just that I get so shocked due to being half asleep that I open my eyelids for a milli second or something? It looks kinda like a camera flash directly on your eyelids. I have no history with epilepsi or anything.

This may have already been asked but why is there no longer a search feature on Gaf? Also, why can't I browse people's post history anymore either. I get this message...

"Tapiozona, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?

At first I thought maybe it was a punishment for a stupid post I made but it's been a very very long time since I've been able to use these features and I figured any ban/punishment would have expired by now.

Nah, it's like that for everyone but mods. Too much stress on the gaf servers essentially. It happened the previous (?) time there was a massive flood of juniors.

The Evil Dead series is well worth your time, start with 2, then 3 and then watch 1 because it's pretty much the same film as 2 just not as good (in mon avis). once you've done that watch Bubba Ho-Tep which is seriously incredible!

Word, except ED1 is awesome too. ED2 might be my favorite movie ever

You can. If you have it installed on your computer, add the image you want to your Public folder, right click on it and click copy public link. Works perfect, it's how I store mine :)

How come there are some people with 1k+ posts who are still junior members? I thought you lost that shit at 300.

anyone else hate "vacationing"? for me travelling isn't worth the monetary cost or effort. i'd rather stay home. sometimes i even wonder if i'd rather "work". everyone asks me if i'm excited about my upcoming trip and then looks at me like i'm a freak when i tell them i'm stressed out about it. of course none of them have the gall to go beyond that and actually discuss the issue. wtf?

Thanks guys, I'll definitely get into Evil Dead, and I think I'll just watch them in order. I'd heard about Bubba-ho-tep, but the title and the whole idea seemed really weird...but now it seems cool-weird...I'll check it out.

Yeah, that's me, for my vacation I can just chill out at home for a week or two and I'm fine. I only go on a trip when somebody else puts it together. :lol

edit: of course it helps that my house is on an acre of ground surrounded by trees, distant neighbors, and a nice semi-rural neighborhood to walk around.

I ordered an Xbox 360 VGA cable so I can play on my PC monitor and am wondering what I need to feed the Red/Black audio cords into headphones. I've searched for 'Female cord to Headphone Jack' and found a product that looks to do the job, but I don't see anyway to control volume. What's the term for what I'm looking for? Amplifier?

I like seeing the world. Staying in one place is a depressing thought.

Planning something months in advance, packing days in advance, spending a half a day traveling isn't stressful If you can afford everything.

Would it be possible to remove my desktops' hard drives and then use an adapter to basically use them as external hard drives? I also have a broken laptop sitting around and I'd like to use its hard drive as well. Does such an adapter exist?

Yes. They're available at any Best Buy/online electronic store. They're like cases that have a little USB cord attached. You mount the drive in and it looks just like any other external hard drive. Simple to use.

I have 3 of 'em.

Anybody want to explain audio quality to me? All I know is that 320 kbs is considered the best? I think...

I just want to make my music sound awesome... How do I go about doing that?
:lol

Well the most popular are flac, wma lossless, or whatever apple uses that is also lossless.
Or you can just rip them as WAVs and they would be 1:1 in quality but not worth it if lossless is the same.(wav might be more compatible))

but if you don't have an awesome sound system 320kbs is enough.

lossless might be good if you still want to convert them to audio CDs later.

edit: buy used CDs on amazon and rip them at whatever quality you want.

Audio Quality boils down to the idea that there are 2 types of audio files in the world:

Compressed (lossy)-usually has a LOW bitrate. (ie MP3's with 320, 256, 192, 128, etc.)

Uncompressed (lossless)-usually has a HIGH bitrate. For accommodating the entire spectrum of sound from a song, so you get the closest reproduction to being in the studio listening to said song being recorded, or hearing the master track for that song live or in studio.

And remember that the better quality a song is, the bigger the file for that song is going to be. So it's a Portability vs Quality issue for most people. So an MP3 for a song may be 5 MB while an uncompressed .flac version of that song can be 30MB+.

Then you also have to accommodate the idea of Sample Rates: 44.1 Khz, 48Kz, 96Kz , etc. And the idea of bits (which is different from bitrate).

And let's not forget about Multi-channel Music which can sometimes complicate things, (ie 5.1 renditions of songs).

Just read this.

-Regarding making your music sound better, you cant add quality to an already degraded file (ie: making a 320MP3 into a Lossless .Flac or .WMA). The only way to get better quality music is to rip the songs at a better quality whrn you rip them from thier source onto your PC.

You can rip the tracks from a CD in a good format or buy/get it digitally in a good format. In general, if you're an end user, MP3 @ 320kbps is great.

Lossless and lossy are methods of compression. Three minutes of original, uncompressed audio (i.e. CD files) might be 30MB. Compressing it using lossless compression (i.e. FLAC) might get it down to 15-20MB. Lossy (i.e. MP3) might get it down to 3-6MB. Lossy actually cuts out parts of the file (like sounds outside of the human auditory range) to make the file small. Lossless compresses it without cutting anything out, meaning a program that plays a lossless file temporarily decompresses it to the full, original audio. So lossless is bigger, widely unsupported (iPod won't play them) and you may not notice a difference.

Lossless and uncompressed are two different things. FLAC is not uncompressed.

Uncompressed formats such as 'uncompressed wav' fit under the general "lossless" category of audio file formats, not the other way around. My mistake, I reversed the two words mistakenly. :lol

I found something to better explain what I mean, as well as better explain lossless audio formats and it's benefits in general over lossy formats.

About "Lossless" Audio

"Lossless" (FLAC, Apple Lossless, or uncompressed WAV) is true CD-quality, and sounds better than MP3 if played over high quality sound equipment. I recommend Lossless if you have a good Hi-Fi sound system, or high quality headphones, connected to your computer/music player - or if you intend to burn the music on a CD. For "casual" listening or if your sound system/headphones are not high quality you will probably not be able to tell the difference between MP3 and lossless, and thus I recommend sticking with MP3 for convenience (192-320 kbps, lower bitrates are not recommended).

FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec), Apple Lossless (ALAC), and uncompressed WAV are called "lossless" formats because, unlike the psychoacoustically compressed "lossy" MP3 format, they retain all the digital sound, unaltered. Therefore there is NO difference between the audio quality of the lossless file and that from a standard 44.1KHz, 16 bit audio CD.

The three lossless formats produce the exact same sound quality, so the choice is up to personal preferences which one to choose. I'll describe the main differences between formats here:

FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) is a free "open source" audio format and is compatible with Windows Media Player (with a plugin) and Linux, but cannot be played on iPods unless converted into MP3 or AAC. If you mostly use Windows Media Player, and don't need to play the music on an iPod, I recommend FLAC.

Apple Lossless (also known as Apple Lossless Audio Codec or ALAC) is - as the name implies - developed by Apple and is compatible with iTunes, QuickTime, iPods, iPhones, and iPads. If you mostly use iTunes I recommend Apple Lossless.

Uncompressed WAV (or WAVE) is a "raw" format with no file-size compression. It has the widest compatibility of the three but the file size is approximately twice that of either FLAC or Apple Lossless, and there are no "ID Tags" (listing full title, artists, etc.) included with the files.

Quick question for anyone that knows this. My dad will be traveling to Australia for business next week. I remember hearing that customs will search your laptop for porn. Are they still doing that shit? If so, anything else that's not allowed?

Lossless comes from lossless compression, so to refer to uncompressed .wav files as lossless seems silly to me ... but maybe you're right. Either way, moot point; .wav files don't have tags and FLAC sounds the same.
