Why does the expression "wake up and smell the coffee" mean to face an unpleasant truth, when the smell of ground coffee is one of the most pleasurable scents in existence?

I think it refers vaguely or generally to the act of facing the day (of which breakfast, including coffee, is the introductory part), as distinct from the act of staying in bed, rolling over, sleeping in. I don't think the truth is necessarily unpleasant: it's just reality, whereas bed and sleep are the spaces of dreams.

Does anyone know of an app for os x or a website that will contantly use small amounts of data and track whether my internet connection cuts out? Been having issues without my connectivity lately and need to leave my mac connected overnight to test some solutions and see if it drops out at all. Any suggestions?

Hi,

I want to make a gif from a youtube video without the ad/copyright. As you can see in my avatar I have a watermark on the bottom right because of a youtube to gif website I used. How can I make gifs from a youtube site without the copyright. I have photoshop CS5 if that will do it.

Thanks

Or if someone can help me:

That video from 02 to 06 seconds as an avatar! Reverse would be cool too!

I've heard lots of people recommend ImageReady, which comes with PS these days.

Here's a question that I thought of recently:

What is the history behind red and green? To give a few examples, red means stop on traffic lights, or do not cross for pedestrians, and green means go/cross. Red means a toilet is occupied and green means it's free. Green is used to symbolise an increase (in stocks for example) while red means a decline.

Why is this a universal thing and how did it come about?

Why does that lottery commercial on TV have a song from The World Ends With You? Every time its on I think of it.

What defines a 'cerebral' film? It doesn't have a wiki entry but I hear it all the time.

Cerebral just mean 'intellectual'. A cerebral film is just a movie that's intellectually engaging.

Edit: I guess some people define it as a movie that is complex and begging careful attention and analysis.

I assume red has negative connotations because it's the color of blood, and green has positive connotations because it's generally the color of life (green leaves, plants, grass etc.)

I'm not sure but green is the most abrasive color to humans and red is the most... relaxing. Ie. red light in darkness will allow your eyes to readjust quicker than green light in darkness.

It's going to be different for everyone but generally a cerebral film will require some thought in order to understand, or promote philosophical discussion afterward. It's easier to describe a non-cerebral film. Is it something you'll likely remember in a week, then it's non-cerebral. Is it something that might inspire a thought a month or more after watching it, cerebral.

Thanks for both responses. Any recommendations that fit in the criteria? I found a list of 'top 15' earlier and I'd seen almost all of them, many of which were my favorites, which caused me to ask the question originally.

I just caught the locked thread about seemingly unattractive celebs you would sex, and I have no idea who this is, other than looking like a bad 90's Madonna impersonator:

I'll be buggered if I'm making at thread for it, and tineye is no help.

Looks a bit like Amy Winehouse?
That's what I thought, but she is way too muscular, and healthy looking, right?

Lady Gaga.

I would, for the record, with Asgardian vigour.
Really? She actually looks really pretty there, and her manly stomach makes mine tingle! :D Too bad about the outfit!
Thanks!

It looks like you're wanting to set up a table of contents. I have no idea how to do it, but I had to follow a template to turn in a thesis recently.

Your best bet is finding a table of contents tutorial for your version of word--that or finding a template you can use. There's lots of stuff going on with styles that I had no clue about.

Thanks man!

Another question: Whats the best free CD to MP3 application?

So I got a new keyboard but I can't control winamp with it. I press the play stop keys and everything and winamp neither starts up nor if already started responds to it. I couldn't find anything that helped me when I looked at the cd that came along with the keyboard for installation so I guess winamp is the problem. Anybody know how to fix it? And if winamp can't be fixed with it, what is another program that I could use for music instead of winamp?

Again with MS Word questions:

1) How do i do something like this without having to type each '.' :

OPTIONS............................................Page 1

2) How do i set the background color of the selected text?

Thank you guys.

For Question #1 - The easiest way is to set a tab. When you go to format tabs, you can tell it to fill the tab with periods.

Is it snowing anywhere else in the world? It was a light snow, but we got our first today here in northwestern Michigan.

I have an account limitation on paypal, and I've uploaded what they wanted to see, but my status never changes and it seems that my info is not making it to paypal. I tried sending them an email but I just got a form letter back, because apparently you can't reach a real person through email.

Anyway, I guess what I'm asking is, how the fuck do I get my account limitation removed since the stupid thing seems to be broken? Is there a Paypal email address that will get me a real person to respond?

I have a question on psychology and sexual abuse. If someone was sexually abused as an infant, can it still have an effect on them even if they can't possibly remember?

I have a friend who is grossed out about sex, over 30 and still a virgin. A family member of hers was rumored to have been a molester. She says she has no idea whether it happened but she wonders whether or not he may have molested her as an infant and if thats why she is weird about sex.

Yes, repressed memories can certainly affect the current psychology of a person. If that's why she is 'weird about sex' is a completely other incredibly complex question.

1) Answered above by Machine.
2) Go to Format : Borders and Shading

Firstly, we had an entire decade of people ruined by false memories of repression. Please read up on the litereature, because it fucked up people's lives unnesseraily, where people were absolutely convinced, 100% that they had been molested by a family member, when regaining a false repressed memory, only realising much too late, that it was false.

Secondly, yes, perhaps sexual abuse at a infantile age could have long term consequences. Infant molestation is however, incredibly rare, and people don't seem to want to pay due dilligence to the word rare.

And going on rumour, doesn't stregthen the case, it hinders it. If there is a paedophile in the family, it comes out explosively enough in most cases not to be passed under the carpet. How can a family member be 'rumoured' to be a paedophile?

If she is wierd about sex and doesn't want to be, she should see a therapist. We can play the guessing game ourselves if you want; though I don't see how that helps her. Are her parents divorced? Has she ever been raped? (I only bring this one up, because 1, rape is far more likely then infant molestation, 2, there are some things she might not find easy to talk about, 3, or she may know the reasons and not want to tell) is she incredibly obese? depressed? had she had a puritanical religious upbringing? is privately very religious? tons of other social/mental issues...

ps. she might be uncomfortable about sex... because she is a virgin at 30...?

Thanks. That link took me down the right path but they're a bit out of my price range. I don't know why I assumed this kind of bike would be cheap:lol Time to start saving.

Yeah, mine was a present to myself with some scholarship money.

I wish I'd had a tricycle as pimp as The Pickle as a youngster.

Those are beautiful. How much did the shipping cost, if you don't mind me asking?

I had it shipped through an Australian company, and I think they subsidised it a bit. I paid $1350 for the bike itself, and the other charges (including sending it from Sydney up to the Gold Coast) brought it to about $1750. Assembly and stuff was part of that.

I wholly agree. Many people are uncomfortable about sex for a lot of reasons, and that's not really the type of rumour that survives within a family. So it's possible... but unlikely.

Thanks. As bean breath said, time to start saving. I feel I need a Guv'nor.

Yes. The Guv'nor is a goddamn stunner.

Warning a) The Brooks saddles are works of art, but they are a bit Spartan. Prepare your nuts.
Warning b) These bikes can be heavy. If I didn't live on a peculiarly flat bit of coast, I'd be fucked.

Ah, I see. Thanks for the advice. Maybe after a more practical bike then since I live in Adelaide foothills. Still on the list. Very nice stuff.
