Top seems more important, so the people who made globes/world maps put their countries on the top. Then it became the norm.

Nope. Direction of magnetic field has nothing to do with it.

That makes me wonder: how did the directional NWSE and magnetic NS conventions come about and are they related?

Also, I had a suspicion that people wanted themselves on top lol.

So if we were to go out to a point in space where we could observe the Earth revolving around the sun in a CCW manner (us being on the normal to the plane that the orbit makes), would the north or south pole be on top (forget about the slight tilt)?

The page I linked said it's because European navigators started using the North Star and previously European maps were oriented towards Asia. Couldn't find any sources though.

If I delete telephone numbers on my iPhone, will data connected to those contacts (text messages, adresses, etc) still remain in the backup OSX keeps in /Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup?

1. What's the best way to get the closest shave without going against the hairs?

2. If someone found out Superman's identity and was planning on telling the world, what would Superman do? Usually in comics/TV shows etc. I suspect Deus ex machina would be invoked, or some brain washing thing would happen, but what would really happen if none of that came to play? Would Superman keep him kidnapped or he'd just go along with it and be like 'oh well'.

I just bought a car MP3 player FM transmitter and it kind of sucks. Is there a good alternate to these if you don't have an RF port in your car radio? Or, if not, is there a superior make/model so it's not all static?

What's a good laptop cooling pad?

My Asus g72 likes to overheat. I tried cleaning out the dust, but it still runs hot. I figure it'd help to have a cooling pad.

It has bad controls?

Okay, I've got (more than likley) a stupid question needing answered.

I'm currently in Vietnam and I'm finding that street addresses are not that easy to find and/or decipher (but perhaps this is because I've never ventured much out of Cali). I'm looking to find a place at this address: 1/34 Nguyen Tri Phuong. Google maps only shows the street. Now, I THINK when the numbers have a divider in it that it probably means it's in a alley?? And if that's the case...then how do I find the alley? What does the number before and after the divider mean? Will it be labled "alley 34" or "alley 1"? Very confused. Please help the ignorant!!:(

Hey gaf my plasma tv has an odd buzzing noise when displaying white images such as the neogaf forums. However it does not buzz on dark backgrounds such as giantbomb.com. Why is this and how do I fix it?

My mom went to the mechanic to have the tires changed to winter tires. She thinks that the treads on the winter tires are in the wrong direction. Is this possible? I tried searching google, but not getting much help. Just talks about bicycles.

But yeah, how can I tell if they are in the wrong direction if it is true? Also, does it make a difference?

Speaking of bicycles I never made it passed training wheels when I was a kid. I don't why that happened. Anyways, I have been seeing people riding bikes and bikes being sold at Kmart and its got me wanting to actually try and learn. Where should I start? Should I try to teach myself? Should I get someone to try to teach me? What do I need to know?

It might be in another file format. Like a word document, odt, or something else. Try using other text readers/text editors.

It's just a .txt file

I don't have word installed on this computer but I did download notepad++ and received the same result.

I'm sure it's some kind of encoding issue but i'm unsure of what that issue may be, or how I can fix it, and my searching hasn't really turned up any kind of result except for that this file could have any number of different kinds of encoding.

It's mainly about finding your balance, and it's not easily taught, so I would say try on your own. You just have to find a good place to practice.

Buy a bike. Practice just balancing on two wheels without the bike moving (sit on it, lift your feet up, balance, put your feet down when you lose your balance).

Do this for a little bit, then try getting some speed by walking/running while sitting on the bike without your feet on the pedals, and then lifting your feet up so you can feel what balancing feels like while moving, but without pedaling.

After you get that step down and are very comfortable with it, then try to put your feet on the pedals while it's moving(but without actually pedaling, just getting the feel for how to balance the bike with your feet on the pedals), instead of having them hoving over the ground.

After you're ultra comfortable with that, try getting the bike up to speed, putting your feet on the pedals, and then actually pedaling very slowly.

Just take baby steps.

Yes some tires have directional tread. They will always have an arrow on the outside pointing forwards the front, like in the picture below. Look carefully, it's not always as obvious as in the picture. If you don't find an arrow by still aren't convinced then look up the tire model number at tirerack.com. And it makes a very big difference if they're on backwards.

I honestly just learned this myself last year. I learned after just a few days when I saw a nice bike a guy was selling and wanted to start riding. Really, all the trouble is getting yourself comfortable on the bike and figuring out your balance. You might crash into stuff, so I recommend trying it in a place with a lot of flat space, but it's really simple to teach yourself.

Whenever I sleep I always have multiple dreams all of which I usually remember. Anyway whenever I take little naps- even 10-15 minutes. I usually end up dreaming. My friends say that's not possible. But I know it happens. So what actually happens?

I dont know about naps but I know in the morning when my first alarm goes off and I go back to bed and hit snooze and sleep for 10 minutes (lather, rinse, repeat three or four times till I'm out of be d for good) I always dream during those 10 minute sessions.

I'm sure it's possible to have a dream in only 10 minutes, but most of the time you're probably thinking about something as you drift off to sleep and when you wake up you mistake that for a dream, when it wasn't really a true dream.

yeah, those 10 min snoozes give me crazy dreams as well

There may be a thread for this already, but I'm going to leave this here for (maybe) some help.

My fiance wants a new camera for Christmas, and since it benefits both of us, we're going to buy a nice DSLR. She wants to get one of the thin/compact ones, as opposed to the larger, bulkier variants.

Does anyone have any good recommendations? Price wise, I'm thinking in the $300-500 range, but if going a little higher means a HUGE increase in quality, I'm all for it. Thanks for the protips!

As you suspected, there is a thread for such things: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=144603

how does shampoo and conditioner work? If the hair cells are already dead then what exactly is going on up there?

Shampoo is a detergent, it has one end that is hydrophobic that sticks to oils and the other end is hydrophilic and sticks to water, this allows the oil to wash away with water.

Conditioner actually have oils in them that coat your hair follicles preventing them from coming in direct contact with each other. This non-polar oil prevents your hair from forming very polarized hydrogen bonds, hence conditioners prevent your hair from sticking together.

/my o-chem teacher got bored a lot.

how much harder is o-chem than inorganic?

Does anyone have a link to a good bootable version of Linux? I have very little expertise in this area, and I pretty much just need to test out a headset that I just bought to see if the defect is hardware or software based. I have a core i5-750 with 4GB RAM, if that matters at all. If it can run off of a portable HDD that still has other non-OS files on it, all the better!

Ever since the 10.5 iTunes update, my task bar doesn't come up when I have iTunes maximized. It's pretty elementary to be able to move the cursor to the bottom of the screen, and have the task bar pop up, well not according to iTunes. Drives me absolutely nuts every time I have to minimize the damn thing in order to access the other shit I have open. Any fix for this annoyance?
