As folks around here know I am one of the biggest fans of the movie The Warriors in this forum, it is definitely one of my favorite movies of all time, and with that in mind I was asked to comment on the game as it relates to the movie.
The short answer on this is:
If you're a fan of the movie? without a doubt.... you should play this game. If you know nothing about the movie? less so, but still interesting.
First off, The Warriors is not GTA... it's not open-ended and though it attempts to look at that way at certain points it's mission are definitely straight forward objectives... with bonus objectives that usually relate somehow.
Each mission is played in it's own distinct area which varies in size. While the core of the game is a beat em up there are a shitload of mini games within... pretty much everything is a mini game... picking locks, stealing radios out of cars, freeing handcuff'd gang members, tagging(painting gangs logo), it's all accomplished by various mini games, and it definitely helps to breakup things.
As I first mentioned at the core of the game it's a beat em up and you'll spend time beating up folks on the street, cops, other gangs, etc... the battle engine works well and allows you to deal with multiple attackers... the biggest problem I have with it though is that the running attack... it's not done very well and has this weird lag.. i.e. when you're running it's hard to time your attacks to hit folks. There's a rage mode that you can build up too that gives you the increased ability to bring the pain.
Mission variety is decent... sure most will have you end up fighting but you get a decent variety in the situations that end up having you fight that work well...
As a Warriors fan I'm really digging the fact that the game starts 3 months before the movie... so you're getting alot of storyline that leads UP to what goes on at the meeting and afterwards... in addition you can unlock and do bonus missions that are flashbacks to how the Warriors first started, how original members joined, etc... and other optional missions that take place just outside the hangout... (I cannot do that damn get $100 optional mission... I need to get away from the cops and mug a few folks I think...
Many of the original voice actors who are still alived returned to do their voices.. the BIGGEST omission in my opnion is a huge one... from what I briefly heard it doesn't seem like David Patrick Kelly who plays Luther.. the Rogue who causes all the problems for the Warriors is doing his characters voice... that's crazy... and whomever they got to do his voice for the character? Not even close. As most fans of the movie probably know the Radio DJ played by Lynne Thigpen passed away in 2003. Her voice alike however does a good job though. BTW the person doing Cyrus? Hmmmm ok, but could be better.. wonder why Roger Hill didn't return....
In between missions when you return to the Warriors hangout there's a radio that's playing various songs(and actually has multiple stations you can change), in addition Lynne Thigpen voice'alike will come on and give you various updates on gang activities... nice touch... often a piece of the update will relate to a mission you just completed or are about to go in to.
All the various gangs that you saw in the movie get representation... Riffs, Baseball Furies, oh yeah can't forget about the Orphans and Deborah Van Valkenburgh as Mercy... omg others...
My biggest beef right now is the fact that sometimes the camera is too close to the characters... those of us who suffer from virtual sickness know that a camera really close can cause problems... and last night... man it was kickin my ass.. but for some reason today I'm doing better... I think turning up the brightness within the game helped....
Oh yeah this is a M rated game... blood, lots of swearing, etc....
The gang orders piece works well.. depending on what you're doing you'll want your gang to follow you, scatter, wait... mayhem(tear up everything), etc.... at first I thought it was going to be gimmicky... but it works well.
Music is as to be expected very fitting for the game, much of it pulled from the movie and/or at the very least seemingly scored to sound like the movie.
This is not an attempt to be a review, I don't do those anymore... and I'm sure I've missed something but really fans of the movie have GOT to check this game out...
I'll edit this if I remember something I wanted to point out but forgot.... maybe...
