THQ @ Leipzig 2008 - Official Thread - Tyranids in Dawn of War II Confirmed!

I personally look forward to SC2 and DOW2 and I'm happy that the genre can deliver 2 so different gameplay experiences.

I came twice.

I can't believe how absurdly good-looking it is, especially for an RTS, and even by the standards of the guys who made Company of Heroes. This is like ten steps ahead of even that. Those Relic fellas are playing with some dark magic.

And now it has Tyranids.... yeah, Starcraft 2 has got some serious competition. Perhaps not in terms of popularity, but definitely overall quality.

.

And to think, it looks this good in stills... unit animation was in its own league in DoW at the time, DoW 2 should not disappoint there either.

In the past, when asked about system requirements, the Relic guys have said the SR would be "similar to Company Of Heroes", and "if you can run CoH, you'll run DoW2". Looking at these screenshots and videos, is it safe to throw that out of the window? Unless they're only talking to those who are running CoH DX10 maxed out at 60 frames per second.

First off, holy shit did that gameplay vid look awesome. As for system requirements, well, CoH maxed out looks pretty damn nice too, its probably the way bigger color pallete that makes this really stand out, and seeing how as many of the people in CoH who have played hundreds of games have terrible peformance ratings I'm sure Relic has realized that many of their fans don't have insane PC's so there's no way they'll be ramping up the needed specs too much.
Edit: New 1UP Preview, its got some good info: http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?pager.offset=1&cId=3169455&p=

Whatever it takes to run this with every last option on maximum is what my new machine will be, I can't wait to ditch AGP and finally upgrade.

I have little doubt running CoH as a benchmark to run DoW 2 was not meant for the high-end, maxed 60fps settings; merely if you can run CoH on medium/low with 20-30 fps at a medium resolution, you can do the same on DoW 2. I think it is a safe guess to say DoW 2 will be more demanding at the highest settings based on the screens alone.

I know this is a DoW thread, so I expect a certain amount of DoW favoritism, and I'm partial to it myself, but you'd be lying if you say you didn't think SC2 was going to deliver on the campaign and then some.

I'd say SC2 is a safer bet for the better campaign, but DoW2 has the potential to deliver much more brutality and better one-liners.

Don't count on it. From what I've seen of SCII it's more of the same 'ol build base, collect resources, build up army and attack paradigm. I could be wrong on this, but from the information that's currently available I don't think so.

From what I've read about DoW II, the single player game is going in a different direction than the standard RTS. We shall see....

SC2 is doing some interesting stuff with the campaign in terms of the actions and story in-between missions. The missions themselves are being made by Blizzard-a company that is generally without peer on making a kickass RTS single player mission-so I don't think there is a lot to worry about there either.

That being said everything else about SC2 is being made with the following rule-"first and foremost, don't scare the koreans", and only the worst of apologists would deny it. Dawn of War 2 is really looking to change the dynamics of the campaign (and hopefully multiplayer, relic please spill the beans already) by changing the focus to loot, levels, and co-op play.

2009 will be such a good time for RTS gamers, I can't wait. I don't know if you missed it, but SC2 will feature 3 entirely separate, distinct campaigns, which play and function different from one another.

So far, we only have heard details about the Terrain campaign, but you get a whole ship to explore between levels, and I'm drooling over how much story and details they're throwing in here. You have special people on the ship you can do side-missions for, you can earn money, purchase and upgrade units and equipment which carry over between missions, so each play through the campaign can be different. Do you want to focus on upgrading your ground units or air units? Offense or defense? Stronger long range or close range? It just looks and sounds amazing. And that's just one of the three campaigns, all of which will be entirely different than the others. The Zerg and Protoss don't have the money/upgrading aspects, but something else entirely, so I've heard.

So yea, I'm pretty excited for SC2, especially how nice it all looks, take a look at the recent thread of screens. No doubt DoW 2 will be amazing too, they have lots of neat features and gameplay changes, which SC2 lacks.
