time to worry about FFXII

The first indication that something was wrong has been the year or so of media silence. Then new screens appeared a few weeks ago ...of CG. At Square Enix on Monday, they showed a new trailer ....which was entirely CG. And now the game is nowhere to be found on the E3 showfloor.

Keep in mind, last year they had a fully translated playable demo of several scenarios and a few hours of gameplay.

As for why, the answer I received was "they're too busy working on the game to make a new demo."

You would think they would then have new in game footage (unless it's moved to the XB360!)

Bummer. Sounds like they got cold feet with whassisname(Matsuno?). I bet you'll end up with the same old same old FF gameplay and stereotypical plot to boot.

*sigh* You and me both, man; you and me both.

I thought I was just missing something. I thought surely since it was playable last year that they had it somewhere on the floor this year and I just hadn't seen the kiosks yet.

Probably indicates a total overhaul.

This is a good theory.

Matsuno is the sole reason (Well, lack of Nomura is nice too) I was looking forward to a Final Fanatsy for the first time in awhile. I really, really hope they don't intend on reverting it back...

That said, Matsuno is too good for Final Fantasy. Ogre games Square! Quit sitting on the license.

What hinted it to me (and, mind you, I'm not at E3) was the "trailer" they showed at the PC...

The outline of their plot: In a time where Magic was Commonplace and Airships roamed the sky.

...

......

..........

LIKE EVERY OTHER FUCKING FINAL FANTASY?!

The only solace I can take with all of this is that they are trying desperately hard to make this amazing. I really hope that is the case... I will forgive them if FFXII is amazing... even if it wasn't worth the wait (because, it seriously hasn't been)... if it's good I'll be cool with it.

But not companies? i.e. PS3 rather than PS2?

It was kind of weird that he showed the trailer of a PS2 game in a conference completely focused on PS3....

Oh well, we'll find out in July(June?).

Hey look it's a thread just like mine! It's okay though, BuddyC is COOL! With the search button gone we'll have to get used to this! I think Matsuno will RISE FROM HIS GWAVE on July 30th!!!! :D :D

You're right... but then again... something had to be said about THIS Gen, no?

...which, BTW, is my major gripe about this E3... "Let's forget about the next 12 months and show you what you could be playing in a year from now!"

I think you can see FFXII's showing at the PC from either way... Sony's showcase of what's to come this gen... or Sony hinting that they are, and have, indeed, moved production over to the PS3.

The CG didn't look like anything different from what the PS2 could do, however.

*shrug*

Edit: And by Sony moving it I mean Squeenix

There is no way this is next gen.
It's way too late in development to move to a new platform now.
I think we're just seeing the results of a massive, over-ambitious project.

The worrying thing is not the delays though, it's the shutting off of the information tap. If it were merely overambitious we would have hyped up constant information flow and new information about places, people, gameplay, etc every few months while the game got delayed bit by bit. That would be similar to how DQ7 and Xenogears both went through their release cycle. With FFXII it's a case of showing that the game is playable and VERY complete on several levels and then completely shutting everyone off and not explaining why even now. That's disturbing. :D

yeah, isn't this the first block-buster RPG Matsuno worked on? I read somewhere he's got 130, probably more, people under his lead on this one. Jumping from the likes of FFT, FFTA, vagrant story even, to the multi-million dollar FFXII must be quite a big leap. Whats more, reading his comments on Vagrant Story, he sounds like a perfectionist. Oh well, July 30 can't come fast enough.

Where's JackFrost to give us the low-down about it?

Personally I hope they keep with the same team. Matsuno rocks.

Well, if you assume that Square jumped ship when they got PS3 dev kits, probably 5 or 6 months ago, and had up to that point already finished the design aspects of the game, as well as starting the U.S. localization team on the script, it would seem very possible as long as Sony was willing to give them a hand turning out a quality graphics engine quickly.

I don't believe it though, and I also don't think the game has taken a major directional shift or changed leads to someone other than Matsuno. Matsuno is a perfectionist, and he's also doing what should have been done with every FF up to this one. The games get so much attention that if you don't impose a media blackout everyone has seen half the game by the time it gets out. I think come July we'll be hearing about how the game is wrapping up, ready to ship for both the U.S. and Japan by this holiday season, in an attempt by Sony to minimize 360 sales and stall the market for the spring '06 release of the PS3.

This game has been in development for what 4 years now? And the release date is FYI or whatever 2006? Fuck Square Enix, this is no longer my most wanted game, I am sick of waiting.

Come on guys. You whine about sequelitis, yet all you talk about from SE is FF12. Let it go for awhile. We have DQ8, KH2, G3,Radiata, RS, etc to discuss and play first.

All Final Fantasy games are different, I wouldn’t put them in the 'sequelitis' category ;)

All I know is last year they had stated that due to time constraints they had to lose certain aspects of gameplay such as airship battles. I hope with all this extra time they have put into development, airship battles are back. That would so rock even if it would be similar to Skies of Arcadia (an RPG I loved). Can't wait for them to spill the beans on the game. :D

I don't think it's going to be PS3, because right after showing the trailer at the Sony press conference, the Square guy was like, "This will be coming out in 2006...we are very excited that PS3 will include backwards capability." or something along those lines. Basically what he was saying is that you can buy a PS3 right away and still play FFXII on it.

Maybe they realized they already had a game similar to FFXII called FFXI and decided to rework it? Seriously, looking at FFXII, I caught some SERIOUS FFXI vibe from most everything going on sans the storyline. From running around to the combat system. Yeesh.

And that would be a bad thing? FFXI's big open enviroments are great, the combats fun. One of the most exciting things about FFXII was that it looked to be bridging the gap between FFXI and it's non-online brethren.

I don't know, was just a thought. I mean, a lot of the reactions when shots and videos were released of the battles were pretty negative on the board (like that means much, but still). Maybe they got a pretty bad backlash with people or something. Who knows? Was just my thought.

Why is it that the Square arm of SquarEnix can't stay pertinent anymore? It's as if the Square side got demoted to the "Vaporware division" while Enix side is coming out with big hitter like DW8 and Grandia 3 just to name a few. How the mighty are fallen.

Aye cuz talking DQ8 even here is equal to all FF attention?

Sigh, I can safely save your my opposite is nearly everyway but that good thing. Makes me realize spending day hanging out on forums is not such smart thing.
Let me rephrase that as best as my MS will let me. There is more then just Final Fantasy out there guys. After all this is forum that rips on japanese for never trying other franchises when only select few sell.

Because Square and Enix are not equal in the company?
