Titanfall 2 Multiplayer Technical Test Impressions (XB1/PS4)

Gave it a go. Feels heavier then I expected.
Never played the first one, mind you. Guns are rewarding vs. Pilots, but battling titans on the ground and from another titan just doesnt feel good to me.

Find the UI a bit confusing, especially within a Titan.

Grappling hook is fun, easily the best implementation of a hook in any game I can think of.

The maps are indeed terrible. No flow, nothing interesting about them. After watching lots of videos of Titanfall 1, these look quite different.

The sci-fi setting looks interesting, will be curious how the campaign turns out.
Just having a hard time coming from Overwatch where everything controls so well, the UI is intuitive, and things have a better pacing and flow.

Not sold, but still somewhat intrigued. Feels like a solid 8

Missed last weekend; If what I played tonight was improved over what was going on last week... holy shit.

This went from one of my most anticipated games to a pass in just a few matches.

This went from one of my most anticipated games to a pass in just a few matches.

Not sure how you can get a feel for a game like this with just a few matches? if i went by this method of judging something i would have never bought Titanfall 1.

Anyways, the third person animation wasn't bothering me before, but now it seems so out of place. It's such a weird design decision.

I do love those creepy crawler things. I don't use it because amped weapon is so much more powerful but it's neat to see them on the ground. i chuckle every time when they come after me

Why is it so hard to play together with friends on this beta? me and 3 friends tried an hour to play together but when someone invited the party, someone would not receive the confirmation window, and if it somehow everyone confirmed, the game started but some people did not join the game, but instead stayed at the menu screen.

Very frustrating i never saw a online fps, even if its a beta, to be this hard to play online with friends

Gameplay in T2 feels fine to me and I enjoy it for what it is. My biggest issue now is being able to play with friends. Last weekend trying to get all 5 of my friends was difficult as the invite friend button didn't work very well. This weekend it seems the invite friend button has been disabled as none of us can use it. We setup our own private network so we could invite through that but even that has been extremely hit or miss and after every game we have to return to the network lobby and spend 10-15 minutes resetting T2 until we are able to get all 5 of us into a game.

Now I know this is mainly a test of the core gameplay mechanics but it is a bit worrying that they don't have things like the ability to consistently play with friends without jumping through all these hoops up and running yet with only a month to go before launch.

Hopefully before launch they will do another beta with these functions up and running to put our minds at ease.

Played some more of this today, I'm sold. Sure the maps aren't as good as the first game, and the movement still somehow feels less free flowing, but I'm still having a blast with it. And I can't say no to that awesome pilot helmet replica

I think I'm getting a handle on the grappling hook, at first I felt it was "reeling in" super weak. But now I'm getting a better grasp on saving the second jump for a something of a "super-grapple", the flow is presenting itself.

Regarding amped happy hour. Did I miss it already?

I got mail saying it starts today @4pm utc but the in-game network says in 17hrs time.

You missed it. The ingame network is different.

I think they should give it to everyone that played the test and/or buys the game on day 1 on consoles aswell though. While restricting it to a two hour window served their purposes it's a bit shitty. Someone could have played like 30 hours but because they didn't play during 2 specific hours they won't get it which just feels wrong imo.

I think I can't justify buying this. No matter what, it's not Titanfall. Playing as a pilot is horrible, and Titans aren't as interesting. The skill gap isn't there anymore.

I still have a fair few complaints and grievances with the game: maps, movement and game modes. But there's just no other game where you can call in a fucking Mech from the sky to fight with. These moments never get old. I hope that this time around they can keep the game and it's community alive for more than a few weeks

Okay, that rural map is definitely garbage. Doesn't work at all with the movement, the titans, the insanely fast time to kill. It's a
n even
worse version of Call of Duty, basically.

Currently debating whether I'll even launch the game again to try to see the other map. Probably not after everything I've read.

I get what you mean though.

Will wait for a price drop, i think that releasing this, with most everyone complaining about it, in the midle of BF and COD was bad...now i think its suicide and the game is gonna tank.

Decided to try the CAR without ADS after reading up on it last night. It's insane.

Even though I'm having fun with this, it just feels wrong as a Titanfall game. Once they add Attrition, and work out the quirks after lauch I might give it a shot.

I'm interested in how they'll handle the sidearm sitation, because playing with the CAR, and the current TTK I really did not need it, but man do I miss having them on me.

In the clip I only had the quick reload with gun runner, but the latter is pretty much useless as I slide as soon as I see an enemy, so there really is no reason for anyone not to go extended mag + fast reload.

The core game itself is fun for me with nice gunplay and movement(new to Titanfall) and does futuristic combat better than the Call of Duty games, but the maps are so bad that I now will wait for a price drop. I just don't believe the other maps that are launching with this game will be THAT much better than these three.

I wish someone from Respawn would drop us a bone and let us know if AI and First Person animations are something that can make it in by launch.

I still think the healthiest thing for this franchise would be to delay it until early next year.

Battlefield 1 and Infinite Warfare will own the holiday. Let them duke it out.

Take the extra time to address fan feedback from the tech test, balance Titan timer, add back in AI and hopefully hacking of spectres as well, bring back some NPC chatter in game to liven up the matches, first person animations for Pilot Titan interaction, maybe tweak the rodeo mechanic a bit, and living up those barren as fuck skyboxes.

It's no small thing, but do this, and you will win back your audience, and you will be in a better position to sell copies.

As it is now, as a huge TF1 fan, my time will be spent elsewhere until this game is fixed. There's a fun game under there, but it's still missing most of what made TF magical.

I agree, the first impression I had of titanfall 1 was a lot of chaos and a lot of things going on at all times. It was kind of overwhelming actually.

I could see casual players having a kind of sensory overload with the verticality of the maps, the speed of play, the titans, the Titan and player weapons, the burn cards, the ai, etc. It's not a bad thing and I learned the game and loved it but I think they tried to make choices that will let more people love the game this time without changing it too much or removing everything people liked.

That's not such a bad thing if it works out and gets more people to play it for longer.

I don't think the changes are so bad that the game becomes generic or worse though.

I have to agree unfortunately. Attrition mode is an absolute must. I'd also like to see them replace their tiniest most bottleneck-y maps, even if that just means sprinkling in some reworked "classic" TF1 maps. I'm afraid that was a design choice though which would mean most of the maps fit that description.

My problem with the changes they've made is they can't beat Call of Duty as far as casuals are concerned.

If they reduce Titanfall to Call of Duty's level of accessibility, COD will trounce them with their experience every time. They should be trying to be successful the same way Battlefield, or Rainbow Six Siege, or Overwatch is - 'here's our niche, you won't get this elsewhere'.

But instead it's 'You like Call of Duty, well we have Pilots vs. Pilots', 'You like specific lanes from A to B which you can camp for kills, like in Call of Duty? We've got you covered'.

Had a go at the second iteration of the technical test yesterday for a number of matches. I thought that the changes they made improved it a bit, especially the increase to the pilots speed (although I still would like it to be a bit faster) and the titans recharging statically instead of being kill streaks.

The new map they showed still didn't instil confidence that the maps are going to be more 'free-run' friendly, the maps were still quite a bit open, making it hard to get decedent momentum going.

I have uninstalled it however. The biggest problem I think is still the TTK. Its still instant meaning that the victor usually depends on who sees who first as opposed to skill. I saw in the change log that they tried to rectify this by reducing the timer before you got a weapon power-up (can't remember the actual name), but I can't see if that actually did anything or not. That felt more like they knew that the problem was there but they don't have much interest in fixing it, mainly because it will allow players who are pretty bad to still get a decent number of kills.
Basically it feels like COD with titans. I assume that thats the main draw or point of it, but I left COD a while back and don't plan on coming back unless they really pull a rabbit out of a hat.

I don't understand how the maps could be so bad... I really think the rest of the game is fine as it is with some minor tweaks here and there, but unfortunately there is no fixing the maps without major major rehauls of them.

It's like every map is Backwash from Halo 2. Whyyyyyy

On a Twitch stream/interview yesterday, a Respawn developer specifically ruled out the first-person animations (the stream was posted earlier in the thread). I seriously doubt that you will see any substantial AI enhancements at launch, if ever.

Lastly, due to marketing deals with other companies, the release cannot be delayed until 2017.

Yes! I've been saying that so long. Carve out a niche and make a success. No shooter will ever steal the casual audience from COD - only if they release another Ghosts :P

Im kind of glad other people had some issues with the maps. I wasn't sure if it was just being unfamiliar with them but they just didn't click. I remember not really having that issue with the original.

Sadly, all I could think about when playing this is that I could be playing overwatch instead. Obviously that's not a fair comparison but it didn't even have that same good feeling as CoD. It just felt kind of off to me.

Ruled out? God that's depressing.

Oh well. Like Chromehounds, another one of the greats is gone.

This is definitely an improvement over last weekend. Also after about a couple hours playing I decided to boot up Titanfall. Mind you I'm playing on the Xbox One, but TF2 is definitely a lot better visually and mechanically.

I played about a half hour of Titanfall 2 yesterday.... Then switched to Overwatch and had a way better time. :/

Overwatch, Rainbow Six Siege, Battlefield 1 & Modern Warfare Remastered. I'm struggling to think why anyone would choose this over those games. the most positive things I'm hearing about TF2 are generally "it's not as bad as you guys are making out".

The slight changes for this weekend have improved the experience, still so many things that are annoyingly designed though.

Even if I did want to pick it up day 1 I'll be far too busy with Battlefield 1. The release date does not inspire confidence in my opinion.

Haven't had a chance to read through the entire thread and I'm sure my impressions have already been well articulated by others but something feels "off" here compared to the first. Doesn't feel as snappy or free flowing. I am still enjoying the game though.

Yeah.

Been playing with Stim and frankly I don't miss the grapple at all. Just wish it was available as soon as you spawn.
Yes, stim is still the better load out. I've been hammering them with replenishment being faster, and it immediately coming back upon death when power cell perk is equipped. Lets hope they listen

I feel like they know this though. They can't be that stupid. There's some really smart guys there. All this can be fixed with the right game modes, a.i, and maps. I don't think we've seen even half of what will be in the game.

You're hearing that because the crowd that really loved titanfall really wanted that game just remade with more content. In the end it's still a fun as hell game and worth every penny, i think. If you're a shooter fan you don't skip it.

I think I can't justify buying this. No matter what, it's not Titanfall. Playing as a pilot is horrible, and Titans aren't as interesting. The skill gap isn't there anymore.
I don't see how playing as a pilot is horrible? It's still very much fun and they even managed to get pilot v pilot to be decent this time. At first i also felt the TItan's were lacking but i've come around, especially since how fun Scorch actually is for a slower version of the Ogre. We've seen 2 titans out of all of them.

The skill gap at the very top has shrunk, but (i know i know elitist) did you ever reach the top of the skill curve in Titanfall 1? it's an honest question because there's still a significant skill curve here unlike other shooters. It's still bigger than COD or Destiny for example.

I don't understand why is it so difficult to implement, unless they're being adamant about. After all you get out of the titan in FPV, you climb and rodeo a titan in FPV, you eject from a titan in FPV, why that one interaction has to be in third person?

You know what?

The map is a big problem. I don't like it. Proximity radar doesn't help you pinpoint campers as much as it did in the first game. I want a map that shows me where people are if they shoot, just like the original. I feel like most firefights happen when someone gets the jump on your or camps/snipes.

It's never running around with an enemy and going up against them on a roof or inside. Pilot gameplay is so trash.

The added recoil is not welcome. Pilot vs Titan is pointless, Anti-Titan weapons are trash, the purpose of Rodeo is only to benefit your or someone else's Titan, not to fight them. You cannot 1v1 a Titan. Even if that Titan is casual scum.

I don't know how to measure myself but my MVP rate in R1 is around 80%, mostly I didn't have it when playing with TitanBrehs (GAF).

When my deaths NEVER feel like my fault, I think I feel what people hated about the Smart Pistol. I never hated dying by that gun, but I feel like breaking the TV every fucking time my glowing body gets jumped on in half a second by someone camping. It's trash and is basically why I never play CoD.

You can watch a video of mine if you want to be all judgemental, but seriously, MVP or not, the shit people die by in this game... I was watching a stream yesterday and literally every death the player is frustrated as fuck. It's exactly like CoD in that regard.

It requires new animations; it probably isn't as simple as placing the camera in the Pilot model's head. Then it could require the inside of the Titan to be more intricately modeled. And they might have to do that across all 6(?) Titans in the game, several animations for each.

On the list of things they have to get done before launch that would be way at the bottom.

Then why didn't they just have it in the first place? Did they not realize that it would be very jarring and annoying to go out of FP?

It seems like another one of those things that they just "forgot" about or just didn't care about, like how going into your Titan doesn't give anti-Titan ammo anymore.

Why are the first person animations so important to people? It's a little visual window dressing that has zero bearing on the gameplay whatsoever.

I've actually seen you in attrition. I just realized it now when i saw your "lasky" name in a video. I mean... listen, it sounds like simple frustrating from a lack of familiarity with the tech test and .the maps in general

And yes there are a lot of campers right now, and tons of snipers but what do you expect? That's how new players play the game, especially the probably thousands that are coming from COD. Not like we didn't get that in the original game. Only there you have more experience, you know how to play to deal with them.

If you're only playing bounty hunt i can see how you could be frustrated. It's a flawed mode, with not enough players. It should be 6v6.
