Titanfall 2 Multiplayer Technical Test Impressions (XB1/PS4)

About people saying batteries are too easy to steal: not if there are people working with you or with your enemy. I've repeatedly been shot to bits by other titans or other pilots when I go for batteries when I shouldn't. I've also done the same.

It's also fun to shoot enemy pilots if they succeed in pulling a battery and then put it right back in to that same friendly titan it was pulled from.

In short, I love the battery system. But I'm a player who always tries to help others.

I just wish it had some thematic sense. Like, why does recovering a battery that was stolen from me give me full shield? I didn't have the shield when I started with the battery.

I have one very real complaint. I can't tell how much health enemy Titans have or when they are Doomed when I am melee-ing them or using the Flame Shield. Give me some alert saying enemy Doomed Titan or something.

I know "dooming" isn't a thing in this game anymore, but otherwise I have no idea when I should back away for a goose or go for an execution. SO ANNOYING.

You just gotta put your faith in Scorch and hold that shit down.

It requires new animations; it probably isn't as simple as placing the camera in the Pilot model's head. Then it could require the inside of the Titan to be more intricately modeled. And they might have to do that across all 6(?) Titans in the game, several animations for each.

On the list of things they have to get done before launch that would be way at the bottom.
Agreed, which is quite a bummer.

Got a hate message for probably being the most annoying pilot in the game lol.

Here's the clip.

lol

I got a Scorch Goose, that was fun.

Man I'm unstoppable in Bounty Hunt, but I feel like I play like ass every game. =( it's missing that "oh shit" feeling. I want it.
And flame shield will definitely be nerfed, it's funny though

joining games with only one wave left. =(

I played a game last night for the first time and I really liked it but I did not ever play Titanfall 1. The first one was just a lot faster?

So at the end of the game it told me I had 6 kills but didnt show deaths and I got the second most points on the team. Is that all there really is for stats at the end of a match?

Not a K/D perv are you?

Trying this for the first time. Can't invite friend.. what gives? Physically don't have the ability to move over to the menu option.

It doesn't work in the tech test, so they disabled it. You need to start a network, and then have your friends join it and then click the invite network tab to play with friends.

Played a couple of hours of the second T2 test last night.

It definitely feels improved over last weekend, and I definitely had more fun with it. I'm a little more convinced to buy the full release, but I'm definitely not going to pre-order it before seeing some reviews.

If you had fun, I wouldn't use reviews as a barometer. I'm fairly certain that PlayStation sites will most likely give it a good or above average score, provided this is PlayStation gamers' first Titanfall experience. Unless they use TF1 to measure it on, which is kinda odd, but you know. That said, for mulltiplatform publications, I can't say.

I just wish it had some thematic sense. Like, why does recovering a battery that was stolen from me give me full shield? I didn't have the shield when I started with the battery.

You just gotta put your faith in Scorch and hold that shit down.

That actually makes a ton of sense, no? If Titans had the shield upon landing, then the whole battery-giving-shields thing is more or less explained. I gather, Respawn doesn't want Titans overpowering too much hence the no shield at drop thing? Just a hunch.

Batteries were super easy to steal last week. This weekend, I've repeatedly been shot while trying to steal one. Either by Pilots or by enemy Titans. Also, not sure if it's just me, but there's weird hitbox thing whenever a Pilot is stealing a battery. It seems there's a few seconds of invulnerability once the stealing animation kicks in? I've shot a few Pilots trying to steal batteries and the hits don't register until after the pulling animation. Not 100 percent sure though.

I'm OK with the battery system since it promotes teamwork in a game that clearly isn't based on it. Most people will want to get their Titans ASAP and just tear shit up, which is understandably so. Once randoms figure out that putting a battery to a teammate's Titan nets them 30 percent Titan charge, you'll see more people doing it not purely to help, but to get their Titans faster.

Why is it so hard to play together with friends on this beta? me and 3 friends tried an hour to play together but when someone invited the party, someone would not receive the confirmation window, and if it somehow everyone confirmed, the game started but some people did not join the game, but instead stayed at the menu screen.

Very frustrating i never saw a online fps, even if its a beta, to be this hard to play online with friends

Respawn has said repeatedly that the invite system is broken. Yeah, tad annoying but I assume that'll be fixed come launch.

I think I'm getting a handle on the grappling hook, at first I felt it was "reeling in" super weak. But now I'm getting a better grasp on saving the second jump for a something of a "super-grapple", the flow is presenting itself.

I'm 5/50. In some matches, I get to be super effective with the hook, while in others, I get stuck on stuff and generally don't use it properly. :(

I hope there's a good movement vid/tutorial that helps players build momentum and such. But the maps need to be cooperative of this as well.

I still have a fair few complaints and grievances with the game: maps, movement and game modes. But there's just no other game where you can call in a fucking Mech from the sky to fight with. These moments never get old. I hope that this time around they can keep the game and it's community alive for more than a few weeks

Seeing as it'll be out on PS4, I gather the community will be way larger this time. Will it stay as active though? Dunno. Maybe if Respawn times their free maps, modes and stuff intelligently?

My problem with the changes they've made is they can't beat Call of Duty as far as casuals are concerned.

If they reduce Titanfall to Call of Duty's level of accessibility, COD will trounce them with their experience every time. They should be trying to be successful the same way Battlefield, or Rainbow Six Siege, or Overwatch is - 'here's our niche, you won't get this elsewhere'.

But instead it's 'You like Call of Duty, well we have Pilots vs. Pilots', 'You like specific lanes from A to B which you can camp for kills, like in Call of Duty? We've got you covered'.

Post makes a lot of sense. But if they can market and sell people to "here's you driving a badass mech and going crazy on people!" That might work, no? Also, if Infinite Warfare MP sucks, I expect the CoD crowd to play this in its stead.

On a Twitch stream/interview yesterday, a Respawn developer specifically ruled out the first-person animations (the stream was posted earlier in the thread). I seriously doubt that you will see any substantial AI enhancements at launch, if ever.

Lastly, due to marketing deals with other companies, the release cannot be delayed until 2017.

Wait, are people seriously believing or thinking that the game might be pushed back just because of forum posts and whatnot? Not being a wise-ass but that's never going to happen. EA (and in turn, Respawn) might lose even more money if they delay it to the point that they need to sell even more just to break even. Lots of behind the scenes stuff are already in motion (release schedule, marketing, co-sponsorships, etc.). Heck, delaying it doesn't even guarantee that it will sell more or be a better game (since it being a good or bad game is entirely subjective as can be read in this very thread).

Don't get me wrong, GAF is very influential, but forum members represent a very small buying market. I'd say 90 percent of Titanfall 2's target demographic either doesn't know GAF, check Reddit or whatnot.

For funsies, I listened to the chatter in Networks (not GAF, but highly populated ones) and people were talking about getting it instead of this year's Call of Duty. some bitching about the unlocks, racist BS (as usual), but generally, not really complaining about the game itself. Mind, this is on PS4, so that might be different on Xbox One.

Respawn and EA (or any publisher/developer) would delay their game unless there's something super technically broken. Every game has flaws and complaints and if devs listened to each one, well, the game would never see release.

I'm going to push back a little and say this is a really fun demo.

I am wall running, sliding, hooking, and generally moving about the map at a super quick pace, just as I did with TF1. The removal of the lock on pistol is great. The removal of grunts in Hardpoint is fine with me. They felt out of place in that mode anyway. Bounty Hunt is a cool no game mode that will require plenty of teamwork to be effective. The energy core mechanic that gives Titans extra shields seems like another great way to encourage teamwork.

I know that I'm supposed to hate this, but I see it as a huge improvement.

You can push back as much as you want, man. This is why the thread exists. We don't need to conform to one thought. :)

And nope, you're not supposed to hate it. I mean, why would you need to? Because people said so? :D Reminds me of BF3 when people said it was shit and it was not Battlefield. I loved it, didn't care what others said. Same with BF4. You'll see people say how broken it is, unbalanced, how it's not a proper BF game and so on. But if you check the sales, player population, they speak otherwise.

Why are deaths important?
Not a K/D perv are you?

K/D perv needs to be a thing now. LOL! I was surprised at this as well. No K/D, no level indicator of the player on the scoreboard, etc. Not sure if I'm 100 percent for it, but it's a relatively small quibble.
---

At this point, Respawn should release a real demo near release with different maps, maybe showcase (even if it's not playable) kits, equipment, attachments, etc. I think the main issue now with the movements are caused by the maps, which I agree aren't conducive to wallrunning or building momentum at all.

So guys, how do points work in Hardpoint? I got like 11 kills but only 75 score

edit:

lol at joining a game where we are 70 - 350 and it counting as a loss when I leave. ffs

lol

Got a clip of the scorch goose?

THINGS I LOVE:

- The lethality of all weapons (everything is useful)
- Hipfire is great; keeps the speed up
- Grappling hook is a ton of fun
- Guns and Titans feel great to use (fundamental of any shooter)
- Slide is awesome

THINGS I WISH DIDN'T EXIST:

- Pilots being highlighted green or red
- Pilot vs Pilot shouldn't exist
- There shouldn't be a kill and deposit phase in bounty hunter; it slows the game down
- 3rd Person animations, but I've grown used to it
- Firebase map
- Would rather Titans start with a shield a battery removal takes it away

THINGS I HATE:

- Three lane map design
- Rodeo mechanic is very limited
- The game is coming out between BF1 and COD

My thoughts so far

Haven't waded through this entire thread, but has anyone brought up the possibility of switching the POV to third-person when you enter a Titan?

I always feel like, with the Titan being so slow compared to pilots, the lack of environmental awareness is just a killer. Usually with an FPS you can minimize the lack of environmental awareness by posting up with your back against a wall or you just keep moving to make it hard to get crept on. But in the Titans, neither strategy is viable because you're such a huge target and you move so slowly.

Maybe if you switched to third-person in the Titan you'd be better able to wreck shop on pilots buzzing around you. (This would make Titan v Titan battles less interesting, though.)

Alternatively, maybe equip the Titans with a version of the auto-pistol and/or scanning/targeting tech that makes enemy pilots glow orange in your field of vision?

I just feel like something needs to be done about the vulnerability of Titans versus pilots. It really detracts from the power fantasy that piloting a Titan should feel like.

"supposed to hate this"

Lol

Don't let people peer pressure you into hating something because its "like cod" or "too casual". Play what you like and have fun with, don't play stuff that you don't.

Games dont need to be so serious.

When a pilot rodeos you, they have to jump off your Titan. At that point it goes back to Titan vs pilot at close range which is almost always in the titans favor. Its usually in the pilot's best interest to escape and the Titan should try to get the kill and steal the battery to heal itself.

Even with Titan weapons they take a long time to kill a Titan and they all expose the pilot easily to the Titan.

I think the balance is really good in titans vs pilots now, in titanfall 1 it was definitely in the titans favor. Electric smoke and cluster grenades along with the machine gun made it very easy to bully pilots.

I like the new rodeo system. I like knowing that rodeoing an enemy gives you benefits for your own gameplay or lets you help a teammate. I like how it forces the pilot off the titan and makes them escape to get their battery, and gives the titan a chance to kill them without getting out of the titan.

I'm convinced rodeo'ng is going to be mostly suicide, even ignoring the Scorch cheese, once people get better. The dismount is too predictable due to canned animation.

Been playing Hardpoint and enjoying the heck out of it. Yeah its not TF1 kind of awesome but the changes they made has made it much better than last test. Now if only we had some awesome maps to parkour around.

Bounty Hunt can die in a dumpster fire though.

I love this game. Bounty Hunt feels so much better this weekend now that the Titans feel better. The core gameplay feels really solid and fun. I'm someone that never got a chance to play the first and this is now one of my most anticipated games this year.

My few recommendations for changes:

-Allow players to choose human/robot and male/female for their pilots

-Titans should have electric smoke charged and ready to go as soon as they drop

-Rodeo needs a few tweaks. Let Titans start with a shield as long as they have a battery. It's very strange that you can pick up your own battery after taking out the pilot who stole it and be stronger than you were before hand. If they already have a shield, allow for an overcharge.

-If a pilot is carrying a battery, they can throw a grenade in before the battery has been removed from a fresh Titan. Something needs to be done about that.

-It shouldn't be so easy to grapple onto a Titan and rodeo immediately after jumping off.

-The tacticals that aren't grapple need to be buffed so that they feel more worthwhile.

-Players should get credit for Dooming a Titan

Rodeo and stim/cloak/grapple away/drop a decoy tho

But it's timed / canned. So the Titan has plenty of time to put his back to one of the many open fields and rip the Pilot apart.

It won't result in 100% Pilot death due to circumstance, etc., but once Titans get better, the Pilots are going to die. A lot.

1. Overcharge shields? No way. After a lot of playing I like the Battery system. Either remove it entirely or keep it in. It's no big deal.

2. I agree, it's daft. But this is a problem with animation etc. it's unlikely to change very much.

3. I don't think Pilots should be forced to jump off at all. Even with Grapple, it's fine. Pilots shouldn't have a hard time Rodeoing if you're going to give the Titan better smoke.

4. They should come back when you respawn. They should come back when you exit a Titan (as well as your 'nade). Cool down for Stim needs a little work.

Hey now, I'm downloading the new Xbox update and then will get the game lol.

I've read a lot of feedback about TitanFall 2, and I wish that I could put into words how I feel about it the way others have. Quite frankly there's something off with this game that I can't quite put my finger on. Movement this week is better than it was last week but it still feels off, like I should be able to carry momentum more easily and not get caught up on objects that stop me in my tracks. I feel like I'm fighting against what the game wants me to do when I attempt to chain wallruns and build speed. As a Stryder user in R1, I became fond of using my Titan in a sort of way that maximized my health while still providing hit and run offensive attacks to help my team (Plasma Railgun FTW). R2 seems to have simplified Titan on Titan gameplay to the point to where outside of using the environment for cover and maneuverability there's not much to it. In bounty hunt I drop my Titan pretty early in a match, proceed to stomp AI in a corner of the map until I'm group attacked by opposing titans/pilots and there's not much more I can do besides kill AI or damage enemy Titans before I'm inevitably forced to eject.

I think every Titan should start with electric smoke, it's a basic ability and having to "earn" it is akin to not starting a match with stim/cloak/grapple etc. it gimps Titans and makes it entirely too easy for opposing players to rodeo you. This of course allows for the battery/shield minigame to take center-stage but honestly it's just not that great of a mechanic. It's entirely too easy to constantly rodeo a Titan, especially with the grappling hook or stim. "I've worked hard to earn my Titan, now that I've dropped it I only need to kill a pilot who's stolen my or someone else's battery oh and earn Electric Smoke in order to make it complete!" who thought that was a good idea? It's odd that I'm campaigning for Electric Smoke considering no one uses it in R1, but the changes to the games core have made it integral if you want to use your Titan to substantially influence the outcome of the game, this is something it appears Respawn does not want you to do.

The core of what I loved about the first game has been watered down in my eyes to appeal to what people who didn't invest in R1 thought it should've been. I'm not sure if I'm going to buy R2, even when I'm having fun I can't help but think about how the first does movement and Titans better.

Oh and the 3rd person animations are really bad. I loved the immersion that 1st person brought in R1, and while I don't see any good reason to have moved to 3rd it wouldn't be so bad if it weren't so janky. Reminds me of ReCore.

I find the 3 TT maps to be truly lackluster, but some of that is due to how they are utilized in the Bounty Hunt game mode (I don't really play the others). Players need to be motivated to move around constantly, I assume this is why they originally nixed Titan timers but the mode is really about playing it safe, getting a titan, killing AI/bounties, ejecting, playing it safe some more which I find pretty boring and uninteresting. If given a choice between Attrition and Bounty Hunt, I'd never choose Bounty Hunt.

Cosmetic customization for pilots needs to be thorough in the retail game, everyone is a Spectre character and the design is weak IMO.

The red/green player outline in the game is just completely baffling to me.

I'm getting annoyed playing with crappy teammates who seem to flip the spawn just before the bank opens. Come on guys, I have $700+ of you bounty and you're going to leave me to die?

The battery system is just stupid. It's people constantly getting out of their Titans to get one, which ruins the flow of the game.

I think that people rejecting it because it's too different or not the same as titanfall 1 are doing it a big disservice. Or they've got some elitist complex about not being able to play a game if it's branded as too similar to COD.

This game is not trash. It is not garbage. It is not awful. It may not be what you expected from a titanfall sequel but the game is not poorly made. It is possible for a game to play well and be designed well and with a complex gameplay system but also not be what you expected. We also are playing a small portion of what the full game has to offer and people totally ignore that when evaluating this version.

That's my problem with all the complaints. It feels like complaining that the game isn't what you wanted it to be, not evaluating it on its own. The first game still exists on PC and XB1 if you want that. I'll still play it from time to time as well, but I think titanfall 2 is offering a lot of good and unique gameplay of its own.

I like the new rodeo system. I like knowing that rodeoing an enemy gives you benefits for your own gameplay or lets you help a teammate. I like how it forces the pilot off the titan and makes them escape to get their battery, and gives the titan a chance to kill them without getting out of the titan. I like the hipfire on the SMGs and how they feel for on the run shooting. I like the slide/jump bunnyhopping, I like the weapons a lot. I like the bounty hunt mode and I actually like the maps being designed around it. I like that the titans are more vulnerable if you rush to use them and tougher and longer lasting if you take your time and are strategic about it.

In evaluating R2 on it's own I've come to the conclusion that it's not what I want it to be, there are lots of people in the same boat. Respawn has even made changes to alleviate some of the misgivings folks had about the game. I don't even think most who complain think the game is "trash". It just features a slew of changes that no one asked for. The game is called Titanfall 2, comparing it to the merits of the first comes along with the territory.

It'd be cool if there is a titan or titan option that lets you pick batteries up without getting out. Stopping to pick up batteries doesn't bother me though. It's a maneuver that puts you at risk. It's smarter to have a teammate do the leg work while you cover him.

Managed to get in a match of week 2, and I think the changes they made were really beneficial. As it's own thing, I'm enjoying it a lot more than I was last weekend. However it still ventures far enough from the original game that I'm not exactly thrilled for the final product. Going to have to play a few more matches.

The battery system is just stupid. It's people constantly getting out of their Titans to get one, which ruins the flow of the game.

So kill them when they get out?

I think it adds a good element when you have a team that works together at it. Just right now seems like a lot of people don't know how they work or how to use them. So many people run past them and don't bother trying to assist the titans on their team.
