Titanfall has maximum player count of 12 (alongside AI) [Respawn comments post #558]

Sorry guys, I was with you all on the whole "Respawn knows best" line, but now the Kooch is on it as well and god knows hes always wrong!!!

Titanfall anger is based on ignorance, or misunderstanding what the game is trying to do http://t.co/hLdoqAyky0

am I doing this right?

EDIT: god damn slow typing on a phone, beaten like something funny

It being a MOBA would require a complex leveling system with specific roles and builds, as well as player death being a really bad thing. So I don't see that happening.

I don't see why those things are fundamental negatives though.

To be honest it's because I feel that CoD is a gross product that uses psychological tricks to make people addicted to it, when it's really a very shallow and unfulfilling experience that results in anger more often than joy when playing it. And I think with Titanfall Respawn is taking another crack at it, to do it better than the multi-billion dollar game segment they arguably created.

I'd like to be wrong though, which is why I'm in here trying to learn more about it.

I don't think 6v6 is bad per se. I loved the GearsOfWar intimate and relaxing multiplayer.
Problem is, that I imagined this game having a "SCALE".
Now this scale, in my mind, has no sense to exist anymore.
Has a sense to have a "titanic" multiplayer map if only 6v6 human players are in? Nope, it would reduce momentum and flow of the game even with mechs and the so-called-AI (still not sure what this means).
So I guess maps will be quite intimate and compressed, not what I was expecting from nextgen.

Next gen design doesn't have to revolve around large scale sandbox design when more focus and attention can be applied to design elements more personally and intently by the hands of a level designer.

Respawn doesn't seem to be into shoehorning large scale "experiences" and I am delighted.

Its is a class based shooter with several human and Titan configurations. Guns and abilities are per class, so they could be like the special abilities.

Also, they could have it set that your death increases the cooldown of your Titan, which could ultimately turn the tide in battle.

While not a DOTA copy, it certainly seems to have some MOBA leaking in.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think this guy is Bish.

Not everything needs to be catered towards Sports.

Game is competitive, fun, and balanced -> It can be turned into an ESport.

Some designers though, have tried to do the inverse path, and ended up with neither. Just give us the tools and the community will say if it's meant to be something else or just a passing fad.

Of the specific points you made, I only think the one about helping bad players feel better with easy kills is guilty of your concern. Even then, they're still contributing to the fight if they're thinning out the enemy creeps. As long as they're contributing, I don't see how it's much different than say the medic class in TF2 who a new player can use relatively effectively with little effort and still make a difference.

Not all games in that genre has player death being a bad thing. DOTA 2 probably has it where player death is the worst.

He loses the narrative a few times and fumbles some points, but pretty solid outlook.

Wait...we have journalists on our side? What has this come to?

I am now rethinking my position.

It is a weird thing, but these can coexist. Titanfall can be good and journos can still try to score brownie points by defending developers' honor against the evil gamer hordes.

Respawn have a gold mine here if done correctly:

Imagine if they try to cater it to ESports and Pro teams with great ingame tools for Team Management, Clans, Replaying Viewing.

Oh mah gawd.
Give this to Valve, now.
IW was never into this during CoD, why would they be now?

I think what we need is a combo Mech and on foot game. Where not everyone has a mech, but they are super powerful. That could offer scale.

There was a PC game like this back when mech games were popular. Where you could exit your mech and enter other crippled ones, and where you were vulnerable while on foot. I forget the name of it.

That was what I expected from Titanfall when initially announced. Now I see it more as a FPS that combines CoD, Brink, Mirror's Edge and adds a BF 2142 type mech and some L4D style creeps, weaker than the player but masses of them to fill the screen. Not a bad combo mind you, but still not the massive true mech game I was expecting.

WTF am I seeing/ reading?

Titanfall looks fun but I'm really unsure about people thinking it's fucking amazing. I don't see the reason to justify anything about this game.
It's a FPS shooter with mechs. It does what it says on the tin.

I don't get where all the sudden anger about it came from and I certainly don't see why it suddenly needs a defense force.

If this game was actually some new ground breaking marvel then sure, I can see why some people would be let down by the small online count.
It looks like a fun game. That's about it. I cant see people keeping hold of it and calling it a treasure in there collection when Titanfall 2 comes out.

No, Titanfall anger is based on a lack of clarity. People will get back on their meds when Respawn releases some gameplay footage and explains how the shit is going to work. They're trying something fresh and new in the online FPS world. Some of the stuff is hard to envision, and its implementation is even harder to envision. Parallels and comparisons offer glimpses of what they want to do, but miss the mark because again...it's something that hasn't been done before. Killable AI in the multiplayer? That by nature runs counter to everything we've been lead to believe is important to competitive multiplayer FPS since Quake. The core concept for the last 15 years (literally) has been man vs man in a maze. Fastest twitch wins. No more no less. They've fleshed this out over the years with vehicles, objective-oriented modes, and additional players, but the core itself has never been touched. This will change that dynamic somewhat.

Breaking that mold with an empty Tweet rather than video footage that explains it all while showing why it's fucking awesome was an unfortunate mistake coming out of the Respawn camp and has created what is more than likely unnecessary controversy. I'm sure they'd take that Tweet back if they could because information this significant should be accompanied by video to put the inevitable concerns at ease. But they didn't so here we are with jurno's getting a free story to write on and 2,000 page GAF threads.

If anything, maybe it will promp them to release video explaining the MP a bit sooner than intended. I'll take more Titanfall gameplay videos given info on the game has been rather quiet outside of those little titan introduction videos.

Lol people are really holding on to that drm thing. I Wonder what the brain scan of a normal human looks like vs a Sony Jihadist

LOL! I can't believe this entire time everyone I knew with a playstation was actually an undercover terrorist...who would've guessed. Thanks dude. On the real though titanfall is gonna be fun on any platform i'm sure. I bet the Xbone will be more fun just because of the controller, or do you guys believe that for a game like this M/K is more superior?

Jeez this topic is garbage.

People praising, people hating. So much subjective BS. So much anecdotal BS.

You all really suck sometimes.

Why not just wait until it's out to see how it plays before saying if 6v6 works or not.

Because there are other companies doing it right and proving that it's a viable strategy?
The very first CoD on PC was already pretty huge for competition play, if they wanted to do it that way they would've done so by now if you ask me

At the end of the day this is just forum drama, but wouldn't it be hilarious if Gaf's reaction spooked EA and they swooped in, demanding high player caps and ruined the game? I can totally see some small print in Respawn's contract that makes this possible.

I've long thought that Respawn needs to make Titanfall a lot more like Fuse.

Not being hyperbolic, my heart just sank reading this.

Not with Activision taking complete control of their creative direction
Why invest in balance when you can invest in KILL STREAK REWARDS

It's quite sad that people are dismissing the game before even playing it.

As many others have stated, player count doesn't necessarily make a game better. Most people, including myself, have yet to play the game. We should hold judgement over a game until it has been played.

Knee-jerk reactions are the BEST!!!!

Titanfall might end up being one of the great games of our time, but I still hate these gaming journo infomercials. But wait, there's more!

Yeah, the headline is a bad choice. The article was fine, but headline sure gives the impression of cheerleading. And there is just a hint of fanboyism in the article itself.

Yeah, can't argue with this at all. It's pretty spot on.

For a game that comes out in 2 months we know surprisingly little about it. I wonder if Respawn and EA are having a hard time finding out how to market a multiplayer only shooter.

Then again, Popcap has been putting out videos of Garden Warfare (which comes out next month) and have been explaining almost every last detail while showing gameplay. It's something that Respawn really needs to emulate in my opinion.

Respawn took the EA Partners contract due to the complete creative control and ownership of the IP.

EA can't stick their hand in the cookie jar too much on this one. Now, they had to give up publishing autonomy in order to gain these advantages.

6v6 has never not worked out imo in a FPS like this.

EDIT: Got me.

You might almost think a large number of people have played it with the current player count, as it was designed, and thought it was really fun.
