They are a tiny studio that made two games, one of which was initially pitched for the PS1 and the other didn't exactly have the smoothest development.

The game's a proof of concept, the lead developer is now only contracted to work with Sony, it exists in the same way Half Life 3 exists, in our collective wants and dreams.

Why is it so hard for people to accept that the game has likely needed to be restarted entirely at least once? It seems to me they probably worked on stuff for a long time, then showed some of it, then either got into serious problems and had to re-do the entire game or realized PS4 was soon on the way and wanted to re-do it for that.

Then that takes more years, but I get the impression people think it's taken so long for one thing, but really it's probably like they've been developing multiple games/visions since they first started. This same scenario happened with Alan Wake. If they knew they would've had issues I doubt they would've showed it so soon.

I definitely believe the game will come out eventually, but what we'll see is not going to be what they started in 2005 or 2006 whatever the year was. I imagine it'll be the end of something they started in 2011 or 2012.

Just you guys wait until TGS. Prince Noctis will come riding in on the back of Ratcatchiwawafalconeagle and dazzle you all into oblivion.

If Sony would just be more open about the development of TLG, these gigantic threads wouldn't exist. When Alan Wake went through a complete overhaul, at least Remedy told about the game's status every now and then instead of complete radio silence.

TLG isn't some national secret, there's no need to be so secretive about it. It's just one game. I don't understand why Sony can't just give some information about the project status to put all this speculation into rest.

Presumably the reason we've not been shown anything all these years is because there is nothing to show. Hard to believe this 'game' will ever make it to retail.

An executive popping up every 2 years and saying 'it's still in development' doesn't mean anything.

you couldn't have me go from one range of emotions to another faster than by me expecting the last guardian to close the conference and then seeing the naughty dog logo pop up.

I see it as the same reason Valve doesn't talk about Half Life. They think it will only lead to more speculation and anger if it falls short of expectations or it continues to take long after they show a trailer. It's true that saying nothing will only increase the expectations, but with a game like Half Life 3 or Last Guardian they're already at their peak.

If you show a trailer of something that isn't done and it looks bad compared to what the end product will be (or what people think the game should look like), everyone is going to rage and say oh "it looks terrible it's been x amount of years and THIS is what we're getting!?!?" and so on. Gamers are whiney as fuck, sometimes justifiably other times just to be assholes. Some devs/publishers feel like sometimes it's best to just say/do nothing until everything is ready.

The trailer necessary to satiate fans would need gameplay that looked close to done, without framerate issues or visual glitches, which they're probably not at yet, especially since from what I hear it's the last year of development where the visuals increase the most. A simple teaser would not suffice, it would likely only anger fans more as we've already seen some gameplay, so now that's the benchmark for everything that comes after.

if that was the case wouldnt they just say it is cancelled?

Everyone and everypony! Listen, remember what Geoff Keighley a.k.a. the Dorito Pope and the Worst Journalist of Gaming Ever said that The Last Guardian is in full development, according to the new CEO and President of SCEA, Shawn Layden.
So, they are going in full-time development without no hiatus whatsoever, it is coming.

Remember?

IT. IS. COMING.

Damn it, I thought it might appear and it didn't, will I ever learn?

OK, after seriously thinking about all this without my rose tinted glasses on this is the conclusion I'm coming to;

the game is not dead but in production as clearly stated to us by Rohde. Clearly, this only just begun recently and as such there is nothing to show right now. Tretton's comment about the game being on hiatus was obviously the truth and the game must have at least spent 3 or so years in that state, effectively cancelled if you will. The original game for whatever reason you want to believe was not up to scratch or vision. New management has been sent to Japan to get their arse into gear (forget his name). So hopefully, this clean up in Japan will bear some fruit. TLG will be re-released sometime in the future but may not fully resemble what we have seen so far.

The fact that SCEJ got to this point is the part I'm disappointed with the most. And whilst Ueda is a creative genius, his role in all of this has to be questioned as well in due course.

Still in production though, hope we see it soon!!
there I go again

My body is ready to wait out the E3 ---> TGS (---> E3) cycle again.

I really can't imagine they'd continue to risk messing with the response to their conference finales each year if they're not trying get it done since they keep insisting it's not dead (and Jack even gave them a relatively decent chance to walk away and start something else).

I don't even want this any more, just do a Shadow of the Colossus Remastered with all those cool looking cut colossi placed back in.

That would need radical changes and improvements to the game. They were cut for very specific reasons; either because the method to defeat them was not fun and interesting enough or because they used way too many resources (this the PS4 would solve easily) or because they needed new gameplay mechanics (the small boar-like colossus, for example, required stealth/concealment mechanics to defeat and more advanced AI to traverse the open field where it was placed).

I think all of these improvements made their way into The Last Guardian as we've seen in 2009-2011.

I'm starting to think IGN was right and it's dead and Sony just said it wasn't to avoid negative sentiments before it's conference. I wouldn't be surprised if they just quietly announced the cancellation later on, in a period of industry calm. If we don't hear anything at TGS then for sure it 's dead.

Damn Sony, really sad that TLG was a no show yet again...but TGS is more likely to host TLG, because they already share 2 letters, T and G.

See you all at TGS then!!

;(

I'm really starting to believe that we need to ban any kind of mention for this game at least until they show something of it (if that ever happens lol.)

I love Team Ico but this has become just one big,sad farse.

Yup yup.

Man, fuck this negativity. I still believe. It's not cancelled altough embarassing that they keep silent. Why would they still acknowledge the game is in development? It makes no sense otherwise.

Shuhei Yoshida said:
Despite rumours to the contrary, it appears that The Last Guardian was never actually on hiatus.

That's according to Sony's Shuhei Yoshida, who pointed the finger at Sony America's Jack Tretton during an interview with Games Industry for putting the idea out there earlier this year.

"Hiatus, I never... It was Jack Tretton!" he explained. "He used that term, and I said no, hiatus is misleading. It was a hiatus in terms of releasing new information. The game has never stopped - the team has always been here. They're going through the re-engineering of the game, so the team size is smaller, because it's more engineering focused right now."

...

"We're waiting for the right time to re-introduce The Last Guardian in an appropriate way," he said. "I can't... Well, the game is in development, and it's well staffed, and Ueda-san is here, working - even though he's not a Sony employee, he's dedicated to the product. But we're not ready to update yet."

If you go back to last year's quotes from Shu, the team size was smaller only 8 months ago when they were going through the 're-engineering' of the game. That sounds as though they are going to redo the game but in PS4. And they are developing the engine of the game, before going into full development mode, which Shawn Layden told us a few days ago was happening right now.

I would say give them another six months to at least get something going.

Also his quote about re-introducing The Last Guardian, I think its going to have changed quite a bit since that previous reveal in 2009.

But yeah hard to believe that its been 8 years since SOTC, I mean how can Ueda have spent 8 years and come up with nothing...

This. I almost felt like we were purposefully being trolled. TBH by the end I was sick of seeing that Naughty Dog logo...and we didn't even get a Crash Bandicoot reboot out of it.

How could they not reveal something at this point? I mean show us a 10 second teaser, anything. There has got to be something done, right? ....Right?
