I was pretty hopeful just before the Naughty Dog logo appeared. With the 'it's dead' and then it's in 'development' rebuttal I was at least hoping for a logo and something to publicly say it's still alive. 30 seconds would be all that was needed.

It would have given a lead in to something bigger at TGS. A little memory jog for the fans awaiting something. A little sign.

It lowers the chance of seeing anything at TGS. If we get a tease then, then it will be 2015 before we get a trailer. That's too long.

Despite the Sony comments I don't believe I will ever get to play this game. Game ideas have turned out to not just work and not be fun and compelling in the past and I think this is another case.

They built something and it just wasn't a game that anyone would want to play. Atmosphere and story and world building can do a hell of a lot but if the mechanics are boring or dull then it's not worth doing.

It may not have been at E3 but the fact that Sony has vehemently denied the rumors of it being dead is enough for me to believe.

TGS here we come!

Look at it this way.
If it has been moved to PS4, and upgraded in the process, whenever it is re-revealed it is going to be amazing.

I'm now convinced The Last Guardian is essentially an ad-revenue generator for the media. As long as people continue to believe it exists, it would allow for more "officially cancelled" ad-clicks in the future.

Please add me. I played and beat both ICO and SOTC. I am willing to buy a PS4 for TLG alone. For me, Ueda's games have the same magic that A Link To The Past and Ocarina of Time did. I remember beating ICO and it was more of an experience than just a game. SOTC went even further and showed me that video games are not art. They have transcended art. They have become a perfect algamation of ART + LIFE + FANTASY. My appetite for this game remains unabated, I eagerly anticipate The Last Guardian.

Not sure why people are so doom-mongering. It's taking fucking ages to release, sure, but at least we know it's still in full development. I'm personally more upset about losing Agent, a game which really is dead in the water.

I expect to see something at TGS or Gamescom. It's more suited to those kind of shows, anyway.

lol. They haven't had a bad game yet. Possible, but not likely.

The Last Guardian being a bad game would be my primary concern as well. My suspicion is that the trailer released god knows when was made out of a fun little demo, but Team Ico couldn't effectively stretch it out to a ten-hour game.

The Last Guardian
AGENT
HL3
FFXV

These games.......

Agent and HL3 are slightly different in this regard, but certainly with TLG and FF XV, when you've had a game in development for over half a decade, and still can't even show off a vertical slice of the final product, then serious questions have to be asked.

If the game is still in development, then for what platform(s)? Is it playable yet? Can we expect to see it released next year? When are we likely to see actual gameplay? None of these should be too taxing to address.

It's a blatant case where a game idea failed and nobody that cares is left to properly pull the plug. I wouldn't even be surprised if somehow somewhere a couple devs still work on it in the spare time to keep the dream alive...

In any case, hype for this pile of nothing is ruining every sony conference for the past years. Time to properly kill the project, Sony.

I was never hyped for this game, I understood it to be either vaporware or in development hell for an indefinite length of time and not worth my anticipation or attention.

And the real kicker is when you see this compared to a game like No Man's Sky, being developed by a small indie team who have even had their studio and work flooded.

Dammit Sony, just announce that it's dead. 6 words will help me move on: "The Last Guardian has been cancelled".

Still holding out hope for Beyond Good and Evil 2 though.

Believe

I imagine that the play testing revealed it was 10 chapters of escort missions where the catbird AI would cause you to fail a chapter 50% of the time even if you did everything perfectly.

As catbird adapted to the player, the AI was less likely to do what was needed to compete each chapter and by chapter 8 all that was left was the dog-catch section of Half Life 2. Catbird was happy and didn't want to leave.

When they dumbed down the AI so that a chapter could be completed every time, it lost the magic that catbird would learn how to interact with the player.

That's my theory.

Everyone and everypony! Listen, remember what Geoff Keighley a.k.a. the Dorito Pope and the Worst Journalist of Gaming Ever said that The Last Guardian is in full development, according to the new CEO and President of SCEA, Shawn Layden.
So, they are going in full-time development without no hiatus whatsoever, it is coming.

Remember?

IT. IS. COMING.

And they are developing the engine of the game, before going into full development mode, which Shawn Layden told us a few days ago was happening right now.

You deny it's not cancelled, it's not on hiatus, that it's full development.

They say it's in full development. That's pretty specific.

Oh dear. So this is going to be a thing from now on, I guess.

The only place the words "full development" appeared was in Geoff Keighley's tweet describing his interview with Layden.

Go to 3:27 in the actual interview, and listen as Layden never uses the word "full."

I just think they couldn't pull off what they plan technically speaking. They had to really master the PS3 to pull off SOTC and it seems the PS3 didn't give enough to realise Last Guardian, that's all.

SOTC was PS2. (I assume that was a typo).

If that was the case then PS4 should be perfect but I've run out of hope and faith and now require proof. Your move Sony

Are you insinuating that Keighly doesn't carefully consider each and every word he sends out on social media? He wouldn't just arbitrarily throw out in adjective like "full" to describe just how in development it is if it didn't mean that there's a team working super hard on it and making tangible progress they can't/won't demonstrate.

Can't wait to play Half Life 3 in 2016 and Telltale Presents: Shenmue 3 in 2018. The Last Guardian should fit nicely in 2024, the same year GTA: IX comes out.

You had an eventful, long life as vaporware, TLG. Goodbye.

It's not the first time Keighley misunderstands the situation. Remember this?

Are people hyping this game off of 1 CGI trailer released years ago?

That was not CG, and there were 3 trailers, a short making of documentary and a vertical slice preview. People looking forward to this game were excited for it long before it was announced. That's because the people behind it have made two of the best games in the history of gaming.

It's just a goddamn shame.

For me, Ueda hit such incredibly high heights with Shadow of the Colossus... and I firmly believed that with his artistic perspective and story-telling ability he was just starting a phenomenal career. ICO was great, but SotC was that next level to me.

He didn't have to do something 'bigger and better' to follow it. He just had to make another personal, profound experience. When TLG was first announced, it seemed like a natural progression- ambitious and stylistically consistent with his previous two games.

It seems that ambition got away from him- and not only has it become a likely huge headache for SCE (who, I should add, have been almost super-humanly patient and giving with this man's visions), but I can't help but think it has severely damaged Ueda's overall reputation.

How can anyone ever give this guy a sizable budget/production again?

Maybe that's a good thing.
Maybe after TLG wraps and actually releases (and yes, I do believe it will), he will concentrate on smaller projects again? Maybe that's exactly what he might need to get out of whatever potential funk a 7+ year development could do to someone?
Or TLG will be the greatest game anyone's ever played and "what have you done for me lately" will erase all of these years of mockery and frustration?

I'm just sad about all of this.
The industry needs creative minds like Ueda, but at what cost?

I do wonder what Ueda is going to do next. He is very fond of Team ICO.

Keep hope alive. Up with hope down with dope. I believe I can fly. I think about every night and day. I spread my wings and fly away. I believe I can fly. I believe.

I would like to say that Mr. Layden is using the TGS opportunity to re-reveal The Last Guardian, but the bitter cynicism I've developed over the years regarding this title leaves me to believe that we won't see a single glimpse of The Last Guardian until next E3...at the earliest...if they don't announce a cancellation before then.

This right here.

Fuck you Sony. You know there's a million people out there waiting to see a glimpse of this game. They've been asking you for years. Literally fucking years. You deny it's not cancelled, it's not on hiatus, that it's full development. Sure you can muster up a few seconds of footage. Something. Anything.

But instead you take 20 minutes talking about some shitty cartoon show on PSN? Fuck you Sony. Fuck you.

Actually, that's not really Sony's fault, but more of Ueda's. I guess you could blame Sony for not forcing Ueda to produce a demo by E3, but what if the demo looked really, *really* rough? At the same time, I wish I had infinite time on projects like Ueda /dream

The last guardian is not canceled, they would have canceled it fucking ages ago if Sony thought dvelopment was fubar, sony has canceled plenty of shit when i didn't work out. Y2k will repent and eat his hat eventually.
Too bad the game has low chances of being ico/soc quality after so long, see bioshock:infinite. Temper your expectations when it comes out.

I'm honestly pretty hopeful that it'll finally show up at TGS this year given the new gen is finally here and that they acknowledged its existence for the first time in a while. If it doesn't show up there though it's probably dead.

Only 3 more months until we see.

If it ever does come out, it will almost certainly be compromised.
