A patch for The Last of Us Part II Remastered is now available. This update adds feature support for the PlayStation 5 Pro, as well as additional minor fixes.

PlayStation 5 Pro

  • New rendering mode added that takes advantage of PlayStation® Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR)
    • New “Pro” mode renders at 1440p, with PSSR upscaling output to 4K, while maintaining a target of 60 fps*
    • Performance and Fidelity rendering modes are still available and provide smoother experience and high framerates compared to the original PS5*
*Enhanced features require a compatible display in addition to the PlayStation 5 Pro console.

Looks like Pt 1 is also updated the same

PS4 game at 1440p without locked 60fps is a little underwhelming for a Pro patch, but what do I know.

What was it before? I know it had a 60 fps mode on PS5 right?
It's PSSR version of Quality mode. That's gonna be typical. It's using 1440p to 4K. Its going to look much better but not so in motion probably. The thing is all inhouse sony games use very custom better version of AA and Upscaling which already looks great without PSSR issues. That being said if they sort out PSSR temporal issues it could give you case of almost native 4K quality which is pretty good.

It looks better than native 4k, actually

Question is, what enhancements are coming to Part I! That game already looks ridiculous, so I'm curious to see what the Pro does for it!

I wish PT 2 got a proper remaster like TLOU Remastered. It's basically the PS4 Pro version ported over without any real enhancements, those cutscene models are ridiculous

On paper it actually did kind of provide a similar upgrade the original TLOU PS4 Remaster over PS3 OG, higher resolution, double framerate, much increased LOD, better shadows..

Real problem is, this time, original game already looked like this:

You don't want to mess too much with a (colossal and massive) game looking like this, not on a quick "Remaster" you're scheduled to ship fast.

Native 4K can be many things. It can be 4K low settings and all. Ofc that's not that in this case. But any ML Based solution is going to look far better in static screenshots than native, what matters most is motion. Currently even DLSS also has issue with some type of rare transparencies although it is in top notch shape, PSSR looks hot or miss. I hope there is some kind of Negative LOD bias effect that this could use. I see it brings out details quite a lot but somehow messes with depth and occlusion. This game is a bad show to test PSSR. It already looks great, we gotta see PSSR in Alan Wake atleast to see how it works in third party games.

It looks better in motion as well

It looks considerably sharper than base PS5, so it’s a good example

I mean I could get that on some level, but the problem I run into is that it if you have a PS4 Pro I didn't notice THAT much of an upgrade.

Additionally TLOU Remastered used the cutscene models which I was hoping would be the case here. I mean if you never played it before, sure, totally worth the upgrade.

We've been saying this about AI Upscaling for DLSS for years and I'm happy that PSSR is letting you guys see the magic.

1440P where we need to optimize and upscale, native 4K is the biggest waste of resources I've seen and I'm on PC gaming with a 4K monitor, you literally can't see the difference.

rofif rofif come back from your self imposed exhile, I need you to eat this wonderful crow now that console bros are seeing the benefits too.

The existence of DLSS is why PSSR seems so underwhelming to me. I expected Sony to come out swinging with so many years to learn from. To actually perfect it, but it seems like this new Upscaling is a borrowed feature of next gen RDNA with only minimal tweak to make it proprietary. When Sony engineers do something from ground up it usually delivers better results or used to. Honestly this proxy war is gonna be unhealthy.

It's hilarious how many haters come out of the wood works on these topics.

First, they claim, "Hey, this is a PS4 game, who cares" (why are you in the thread) or that "Naughty Dog was lazy for not doing more". I think most people would rather Naughty Dog focus on new games rather than adding raytracing to old games.

This looks better than fidelity mode on PS5, yet it runs at 60fps instead of 30 fps.

The "PS4 game" ran at 1080p30...

4x the resolution and double the framerate... but it's still a PS4 game... You're doing 8x the work of the PS4 game...

And if you think it's an old game and it doesn't matter, focus on newer games.. you guys are hilarious.

It's hilarious that how many corporate shills come out here overhyping existing stuff, picking proxy wars to the point I have to think either these guys don't own Playstation and their brand loyalty comes from social media or are converts from PS4 gen because how many times I am going to play The Last of Us. It's on 4 different systems now. I gave the PS4 version a pass because it was a truly worthwhile upgrade but wtf is the idea of playing this game on PS5 Pro. To me what's the most shill thing here is how come the forum is not filled with threads saying how come there is no launch title or a fucking new game from Sony to play on this new console when they are making their most premier studio release no new game for 4 years.

Can we just appreciate that Sony likely just gave AMD the RDNA 3 blueprint for a.i. upscaling???

When you think about it. This update is actually better than Alan wake 2. Yea, I am dead serious. Talking about performance mode here, and I don't really care about fidelity mode. Maybe 40fps mode is ok if the performance mode is really bad.

Give me sharp image quality plus stability over graphic. What the point with better graphic if it look blurry and instability issue with dithering on my giant 77in 4k TV. What is the point Remedy?

You've got your head twisted...

  • Who is overhyping anything? Be specific
  • Who said you have to play TLOU again? Why did you come to this topic about it getting updated?
  • Maybe not everything is about you. A lot of people have never played TLOU P1 or P2 and now they can on PS5 Pro. It's a simple update that didn't take resources away, yet you're also complaining that they didn't do more to it
  • No launch title? This isn't the PS6, what was the PS4 Pro launch title? Make it make sense
  • Naughty Dog hasn't released a game for 4 years? Has CD Projekt Red? What was the last Rockstar game released? Where did you get in your head that they need to release games ever 4 years, but other companies don't?

How does this track? Let's start with your own premise that you don't care about the extra bells and whistles in their new fidelity mode.

The new performance mode does exactly what TLOUp2 does. It takes the base PS5's fidelity mode and delivers it at 60 with pretty much the same fidelity. If anything Remedy did more for their 60 fps mode here than Naughty Dog did. This just doesn't track.

The PS4 Pro and the Xbox one X didn't release with launch titles either. Mid gen systems never have so far.

As far as ND and not releasing a game. Well they got stuck working on their GAAS game that got canceled and have now moved on to making a new SP title. What am I supposed to do? This shit happens sometimes games get canceled and it puts a studio behind. That's what happens when you take chances on a new game\mode\IP sometimes. It doesn't work out and you get behind. Crying about it in a neogaf thread isn't going to change anything and I honestly don't want people to do that. Let these studios take chances sometimes they'll fail it's ok.

Maybe someone can try this out too but the 2.0 patch did something to the graphics of Part 1! The patch notes say they introduced a new rendering method for the Pro but on my standard PS5 the graphics are now worse than before. At least in Fidelity mode (which I prefer).

Foliage and fine detail like hair, Joel's beard and fences are flickering now. Everything looks way too sharp. Quick camera movement stutters now too. The game just looks "wrong" now.

This reminds me on Horizon Forbidden West at release. The fidelity mode in the game was overly sharp until they toned it down via patch!

I'm a little upset right now. It's my favorite game of all time, I have hundreds of hours played and it looked perfect the way it was.
I immediately noticed something was wrong when I booted it up yesterday with patch 2.0 applied...

I hate this. Their fucking Pro patches shouldn't influence the games on standard PS5!
