Mission Impossible pioneered the CG Marvel uses now.

You only notice bad CGI. You don’t realize how many movies and scenes are using CGI while your thinking it’s practical. Using practical effects is almost a waste of time with the technology we have. Practical effects is mostly marketing hype. The problem is when teams are rushed and are trying to make deadlines.

This is true, but there is so much bad cgi around, it seems particularly like things that have a lot of action often end up being swirling masses of angles and textures that are just indistinct and blurry.

You're also right about cgi being used more than most realise, I watched a youtube video with clips of films with cgi then the original filmed footage was shown. Most of the time I was surprised at how much real stuff was actually cgi ...and I like to think that I'm quite aware 😬

I'm sure that video is fake.

Of course there is CGI in TGM, but I'm also sure the actors weren't put through months of naval pilot training, including escaping underwater and G-force endurance, just to film on a green screen.

From the production notes.

"The actors also had to learn how to run the cameras because when they’re up in the jet they have to direct themselves essentially. They also needed to be taught about the lighting, cinematography and editing, as it is the once-in-a-lifetime experience."

Sure, but hardly any of the cgi gest films of today manage to build a fraction of thr excitement I get from the great action films of past decades.

Saw Fie Hard with a vengeance recently, and my, that movie kicks ass.

I'd like to turn your claim on its head though. You don't notice good cgi no, but you do notice when shit is real.

CGI is fine as long as they dont go too far like they did with teh prequels. The effects looked good but it was so much green screen that the actors didnt get to "act" against eachother and all the performances were so wooden.

Hey YouTubers out there, did you figure out if this is real or not? As some of you have noticed, this is a fake video. It is originally from the new trailer for the upcoming "Top Gun 2" with Tom Cruise. In this clip I wanted to show the potential of visual effects in todays feature film industry. What do you think? Shooting practical vs. shooting on a green screen sound stage? Let me know in the comments

I agree to an extent.
These movies still use a lot of CGI but they do a nice job of balancing it out with a lot of practical effects and stunts too. It's the same as Mad Max Fury Road, it's not that it was all 100% practical but rather a nice mix of both.

Meanwhile the MCU feels like it has little to no practical elements, as someone posted in another thread we are at the point where even a scene of 2 characters talking in a bar is done on a green screen. IMO MCU movies look pretty bad. The MCU has a few standout effects like Thanos but overall I think they look pretty bad.

People don't really watch MCU for the action scenes though. People watch for the character interactions & power displays. The better action sequences in a movie like Winter Soldier pale in comparison to the Raid films. But Winter Soldier is still fun to watch cuz of the characters & set pieces.

I think both MCU and Mission Impossible movies have issues.

I like the more practical effects of the MI flicks, but it's not always the best. You look at the Helicopter finale where Tom pilots a chopper while also moving the camera and its supposed to be this amazing awe-inspiring chase, and yet it falls flat. A lot of the shots have a gopro feel because they felt the need to show Tom in the cockpit. The third person shots of the choppers dont really have the kind of intensity we saw in Black Hawk Down. I really dont think that shooting it like that made it a better action scene.

On the other hand, Marvel just doesnt give a shit about how poor their green screens look. End Game's final battle scene looks like a straight to dvd movie with its awful looking green screens. Oddly enough, the Infinity War's big battle scene shot on location looked far better so they CAN do it, it's just that they didnt even bother with End Game. Even the green screen fight on Titan against Thanos looked stunning compared to the End Game finale. Maybe they ran out of money or time because it looks cheap.

Mandalorian is not a series that I love, but my goodness it looks gorgeous. It looks amazing indoors, outdoors, under fake brown lights, in shitty sets, or on location, it just looks amazing no matter what. I dont think Doctor Strange looked bad or unimpressive, but it has so much CG that it does kinda take you out. Multiverse feels like CG world.

Lastly, one has to look at nolan's reluctance to use CG to see just how badly his movies suffer. Dunkirk was supposed to have 300k men and it looked like they had maybe a 1000 men max. It hurts the movie. Hurts the atmosphere. You need CG at that point. Tenet's big plane crash scene was underwhelming thanks to its go pro shots.

No one but Tom Cruise has the power to tell studios to fuck off or let him do this, the cost of insurance the studio has to approve here lol
One Bird to the face and he's done.

You can tell that it looks real in the movie.

Sad that they used so much CGI in MI:Fallout for the skydiving scene, totally unnecessary and actually undermined the fact that he did it for real also.

Even if Im highly skeptical of his religious believes, he is the last true Hollywood block buster star - he will never show up in some Netflix flick.

I want a Raid 3

All the cg is focused on not making tom look like a 60 years manlet.

Hey man being fun-size lets you be more agile & low profile, perfect for a spy. Ethan Hunt is not supposed to be a tall Bond-tier seducer, in fact if I remember correctly he is usually the one seduced by the women in these movies lol

Well they’re very inconsistent. Then again comic movies obviously require a lot more CGI then most action movies. So there’s a greater chance there will be some bad shots

Video is fake

Cruise really flew that plane.

And the CGI in the video is so bad it hurts

Your post backfired so bad, that it proved OP's point

I remember hearing like 2 years ago when they initially revealed the footage that they are two seaters so its real but someone else was flying.
