Tom Henderso doesn't know PS5 Slim name or not

About the Slim, I just saw this:

Who knows later, although I think this one is given a lot of balls. But due to the architecture of PS5, the idea of being able to snip the size seems strange to me.

I'm in no rush to get a PS5 but I do hope it's this year. I only need it to play VII Rebirth. I could buy the current PS5 but don't know where I'd be able to put it. Hopefully the new model doesn't look so silly.

Yeah if he has no idea why not just say "I have no idea" and leave at that

NeoGaf exclusive. This is the first time I'm going public with this info and I'm risking a lot for you guys right now: I don't know anything about the Ps5 Slim or if it's even happening.

I'll eventually get a PS5 as well, hoping the designers didn't go full stupid with this one.

I'm sure there will be a redesigned PS5 to cut costs and streamline production. It's not a Pro because that doesn't make sense in 2023. Whatever redesign is coming this year, I don't think they'll go with any of those old taglines "SLIM" etc... It will probably just be PS5 that is cheaper to produce, uses less power, same performance and maybe it will get a price adjustment.

Some people are going to be mad when that bitch is still big.

It'll have to shrink somewhat or it wouldn't even be worth it for them to do it. The internal revisions they've already done leave the current chassis with unused space as it is. Thus, the existing 6nm chip (which might be all that is in these) can already support a smaller case that would save them money on shipping and storage.

Except Tom doesn't just make shit up

I read this as he knows a redesign is coming he does not know if this will be a "slim" model or not

This. With his latest tweet quoted in the OP, Tom did state that he has seen some prototypes of it, and doesn't think that they were that much of a "slim" model at all.

Insert gif of that person in the green windbreaker yelling no. If those goofs don't at least lower the volume by a good 20-30%...

5nm PS5 chip should have at least 70MTr/mm2 so with 10600mln transistors it would have been 152mm2. For comparison 7nm PS5 Fat chip has 308mm2.
7nm 308mm2 230W peak total system power
6nm 260~mm2 210W peak total system power
5nm 150~mm2 120W peak total system power ???

So way smaller console.

At least with Switch owners there's at least the eventuality of the next system where as Slim stans might be hurting if this is really just the new dd-optional base model. At least they can share a room on monday therapy sessions. Hope they keep the design on it though even if controversial to some, I really like the DE version standing vertical.

It won't be 5nm

I am guessing it will be revealed soon. Spider-Man 2 is starting some media blitzing this week, and I personally expect an announcement either at the end of this month or next month with a bundle shown for the game in the redesigned box.

The detachable disc drive rumor sounds so weird to me.

Why not just cut the price of the disc drive model and discontinue the digital model?

This way they only have to produce the disc model and save money on producing another SKU/peripheral (detachable disc drive).

The idea that they will sell a separate disc drive makes no sense to me.

I think the whole point is to push people towards digital by selling an overpriced disc drive. And digital is obviously more lucrative for both Sony and the various publishers

Every minor hardware revision was called Slim for obvious reasons. If this version is called different, the administration marketing sucks. It sucks more than instead of PSP 2, having a portable called differ... Oh, shit

Agreed. This would basically be their way of going digital while avoiding the backlash from an angry mob of anti-digital players. With the detachable drive players can just buy that and still have the option they want.

If they are bringing out a pro at some point it makes no sense to have a "slim" branding.

It would only confuse the customer base.

So I think it will just be as Tom says a redesigned model ( likely stealth dropped) like they will just have it at a showcase as a footnote.

Then in the future have an actual pro model release and this one just be a Ps5.

I don't see it as a negative, as long as the physical option is still there. I expect PS6 to have some kind of drive and physical releases, though they'll be more and more for people with poor internet connections

There won't be a "slim" branding. The redesigned version is always replacing the original model for Sony. I still don't believe we're actually getting a pro. Not before the end of next year anyway.

Megaton, it's a portable ps5, has a 15" screen, a 50,000 mah battery, weights 15lbs and cost $1499.
