Tom Henderson: Next God of War is 2.5D/metroidvania - Smaller scale than Initially thought

  • The project is basically GOW X Blasphemous
  • It's being developed under supervision of Sony Santa Monica
  • Set in Greece before Kratos becomes a God
  • Deimos will return
  • "Better art style than Hades"
  • Mega Cat Studios (FNAF: Into The Pit) could be involved in the development.

This is my 9/11

It doesnt make sense a God of War game where Kratos is not a god. He doesn't have powers, he can't fight monsters.

It's like a Spiderman game with Peter Parker before being bit.

Bizarre idea.

Read on the purple place that they're actually on a support role, while the actual lead dev could be Drinkbox Studios (Guacamelee!).
That would make sense why they're comparing it to Hades then. They always had that cell shaded look.

He is born as a demigod.

If this is some smaller side project given its under supervision, that doesn't interfer with something bigger at SMS, then I'm all for it. Sounds like an indie collab which would be good. Sony needs to dip back into these kinds of smaller ventures again like they used to bankroll back in the day.

He led the entire Spartan army with assistance from the Gods as a demigod. He's Hercules's half-brother.

Go balls to the walls gore. I am kinda fatigued on God of War.
2.5D metroidvania will do just fine. Day one for me.

It's a bizarre post when Ascension already exist. More to it, he become god only by the end of the first GoW. He killed Ares while still being human.

I don't see where the problem is. I thought we wanted smaller releases from Sony and this sounds exactly like what some people that weren't big fans of dad of war have been asking for. They're probably working on the next "big" god of war game regardless of this spin-off.

This is Gaf, we are never happy.

God of War has never been known for platforming puzzles? Tell me you never played God of War without telling me you've never played God of War.

Also:

GAF: Sony should do more AA games
GAF: LMAO @ Sony doing AA games

I've played and finished every game in the series. The puzzles are all pushing around blocks and pulling switches. I wouldn't say Zelda is known for platforming puzzles either. Compare to Prince of Persia where actually 75% of the game is traversal puzzles and platforming.

it was a great game to use as a coaster, or a door stopper... even toilet paper if the plastic isn't too hard for you
So edgy. you know what they say, opinions are like arseholes and you can wipe your own with it if you're into that. I'm certainly not going to wipe mine with one of the great games out there though

I'll wait and see before making judgement. Can't say I'm bouncing off the walls in excitement for it though. I'd like to see what SSM are actually working on, since they're just overseeing this one.

adamsapple adamsapple should add this to the OP.
I'm intrigued, hope we see it tomorrow.

Bigger budget Metroidvanias are always welcome. Sounds similar to Prince of Persia. I'd be fine if they used this chance to make a new IP though honestly instead of more God of War. Game will probably be pretty good though.

But, just like PoP The lost crown, I hope it doesn't share the same abysmal, abhorrent and just plain awful and Marvel-ized art direction...

I mean, the designs in GOW and especially GOW Panderok are already so generic, so awful and so Americanized that I can't fathom how worse it could actually get, a game that really insulted both my intelligence and my time.

Fuck this franchise, it needs ANOTHER reboot after the shite that the last 2 games were.

I've been wanting God Of War 4.

I booted up God Of War 3 yesterday and its a DREAM to play. Smooth, quick, amazing pacing, fun as hell, visceral.

This reveal doesn't do anything for me the way its being described. Instead of hoping for gow4, I will just replay the classics over and over and be content with it.

GLAR has never really been reliable for leaks.

PoP was a bit bland in art style for sure, but the gameplay was more than good enough to make up for it. I expect art style to really pop in this if it's Drinkbox Studios. They usually have their own style, so if they're trying something a bit more serious or stylish as opposed to their usual Ren and Stimpy-adjacent style, it could be neat. They always max out the color spectrum.

I'm kind of expecting something like Shinobi, but that game has jaw dropping animations so we'll see.

Wut, God of War was already American as hell in its art style. It's made in California!

God of War doesn't seem like a good fit for this.

A Metroidvania, sure, I can see the series working with more of those elements. Something like Pandora's Temple in the first God of War would be cool if it leaned more into Metroidvania.

But a 2.5D game? No. God of War is about big league spectacle that pushes the hardware it's on.

It cant be worse than the AAA progressive slop sony is shitting out this days... AA smaller budget, gameplay centric, might be good.

The game could be really cool, and I personally like Sony taking risks on smaller scale games, but I just don't think this is going to be well received by the larger PS audience.

Love Metroidvanias so I'm all in. Still bummed Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown's team was dissolved, that was a great game. I want more franchises to try the Metroidvania route.
