Tom Henderson: Next God of War is 2.5D/metroidvania - Smaller scale than Initially thought

This is a good way to keep the franchise relevant while they work on the next big thing for it, they don't all need to be grand epics. Frankly this is what more publishers should be doing, but it feels like only Atlus ever try spin-offs these days.

Young Kratos, warts and all > Dad of War

Why? Cause Young Kratos is not a bore. He will burn an entire city state for mildly inconviencing him. And the series tried to go over the top every chance it got.

Allso real tired of Norse Mythology setting.

This sounds awesome!
Agreed. This sounds like a win for the old school gamers. Metroidvania 2.5d God Of War? That sounds really awesome.

We got more then enough big AAA 3rd person God Of War titles, I'm ok with this different direction as its not like all of Sony Santa Monica is working on it.

Something different is welcome for a change.

I, for one, welcome indie and AA budgeted games from Sony.
With the money they spend on an AAA title, they could fund several dozens of smaller games.

I'd need to see this in motion before I can care about the idea of a GoW Metroidvania. I'm not convinced.

Castlevania Lords of Shadow Mirror of Fate was close enough.

If it's something like that, I don't see the issue. Also not like GoW 2 didn't have that one 2D section.

if its good its day 1, metroidvania GOW at least is a fresh new thing for me.

Love 2d-2.5d stuff….small little holdover game until the next big thing comes out is nice….are they working on this with another studio or just solely sm?…. .. . . You still got that Cory game(rumored space themed game) too.

Wonder what the odds that we get a shadow drop tomorrow. Would be such a small game and there isn't really a better time to advertise this thing than during the state of play. Hopefully, they drop this for like 30 bucks, but my guess is it'll be at least 40.

I wonder if TC Carson is on this. Wonder if it'll drop on PS4.

They have Death Stranding 2 in a few weeks. Lost Soul Aside in August. Ghost of Yotei in October 2nd.

A shadow drop makes a lot of sense.

It will just be generic looking that even mobile phone run if it's true, not a graphical showcase for this gen consoles.
Not every game needs to be a graphical fidelity showcase. This is bad if you only care about graphics and nothing else.

Feels to me like this is plan C. The Emergency Situation title. You know, when all their gaas dreams crumble, you create something fast and cheap, just so you have a title to release.

Man i truly like Playstation and have always been with them since PSOne but...how is it that they give everyone everything EXCEPT what their audience actually wants?

Who in their right mind was at a meeting and thought "hey you know what kind of God of War game everyone wants?" and thinks about this...

Where's Bloodborne remake? Where's the next Uncharted? Where's the countless dormant IPs that never flopped that could be having new games?

I look at stuff like this and whatever the new Bungie studio is doing (the one that was just formed) and i wonder how did we get to this point.

Like...i am a huge fan of smaller scaled games but don't they do any market research for these things?

I seriously hope whatever Mediamolecule is doing is good. And Team Asobi even if it's a new Astrobot.

I think this is an amazing idea. Nintendo does stuff like this all the time and it works.

Okay so it's probably not a GAAS title. It's probably not an overbudgeted cutscene festival or walking simulator. It sounds like it's trying to be "just a game". Am I supposed to still be mad about this? I can never tell where the line is anymore. Where did we park the outrage wagon??

I'm pretty sure it's a small and quick thing for them to do while the main studio making a big one for the next gen. Can work just as good as POP metroidvania from Ubi, so I'm in.

Why wouldn't Sony just remake the trilogy. It's easy money.

They're probably holding off for a couple of reasons

They haven't made much progress with the Amazon TV Show, having just changed showrunners recently. The show doesn't even have its Kratos. We're probably at least two to three years out from seeing it release.

That timeframe puts us closer towards this being a cross-gen maybe even a launch title for PS6.

Pedro Pascal was cast as Joel on February 10th, 2021. It was nearly two years later that the first season premiered.
Craig Mazin was announced as the showrunner on March 6th, 2020, so nearly three years later.

If God of War takes that same trajectory we're looking at late 2027. We'll see if we have our live action Kratos by the fall/winter.

So yeah, easy money, but the smartest play is to release this closer to the release of the tv show, probably releasing a remake every 2 years like Resident Evil.

Sounds shitty. God of War should be about huge spectacle and set pieces, which we got on Ps3 hardware but on Ps5 we get 2D lol.
And no, the Sad Dad games don't count.

Sounds good to me, day 1. Love GoW, love Metroidvanias, love Blasphemous. I bought Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown full price at release and enjoyed every second of it, one of my favourite games of last year. It's fair to expect something that will be *at least* of the same quality.

Sounds good, won't bee too different than the first trilogy, chains of Olympus or Ghost of Sparta (which had fixed camera)

That Prince of Persia metroidvania was fantastic tho. If this is a similar quality, it'll be alright.
PoP has a miserable legacy of 2/2.5d games. The remake and Forgotten sands PSP were hot garbage, as was the GBA game.
Haven't played the last crown though.

Those smaller games are not often doing great financially- Journey did well I guess-, people seem to expect go big or go home from Sony, I think, but they are usually quite good. I rather have Sony burn some money with small games, than burn a lot of money on gaas stuff I am almost certainly not interested in. They should also allow smaller devs to make all sorts of games with their IPs if they occupy their own teams with these giant 5+ year mp projects. Expand xdev a lot. Naturally not completely hands off, since overusing characters in too many mediocre games will harm the IPs, but a couple of okay to good games could be a nice addition, for Plus too. Astrobot Bros/World could be good, Demon Souls or Bloodborne in 2D would basically be Castlevania, Sony could benefit from a smaller 2D fighter where there are too many but all missing interesting characters, they really need a karting game or arcade racer after fumbling Driveclub and Motorstorm, sending Modnation and LBP Karting in retirement and kinda not knowing how to improve or reinvent Wipeout. There are a lot of gaps that should be closed on small scale projects and some that should be explored and greenlit with a bigger budget if someone has some fresh ideas and showing passion and capabilities. Built new partnerships with next gen's Housemarque!

God of War, but like the last Prince of Persia in size and scope, would be fucking incredible if done correctly. I'd be far more hyped for this than another Dad of War entry. This could be absolutely amazing.

Great things about such low budget low end games is it will run very well on portable handhelds like the Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch 2.

I'm Ok with smaller size projects, you can afford more risks and try something different with less budget, less sales expectations and less DEI
