Tom Henderson: Ubisoft plans to release an Assassin's Creed Game every six months for the next decade

From the Xbox Two Podcast:

In the podcast, Henderson talks a little about Ubisoft's current development pipeline for the next few years, which he describes as "strong". He lists a bunch of titles that are currently unannounced, including a new Ghost Recon game, Far Cry 7, the rumored Rayman title, an extraction shooter called Far Cry: Maverick, before then going into the many, many Assassin's Creed games in development.

They've got Assassin's Creed Shadows, they've also got Assassin's Creed Invictus next year, Assassin's Creed Hexe, Assassin's Creed: Black Flag remake, and they plan to do a new Assassin's Creed every six months or so for the next ten years, I believe.

If Ubisoft actually sticks to those plans, that means we'll be getting 20 Assassin's Creed games of varying size and scope over the next ten years, which is a completely absurd level of output that you have to wonder whether a developer that's already in a bit of trouble can pull off. Not to mention that these plans may not go ahead if Ubisoft actually decides to accept a buyout and go private, as recent rumors have suggested.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't this series go from every 3/4 years, to every year, to then every 2 years and now they want it to be every 6 months?

Hired so many unqualified people that they only know how to milk 1 franchise till the company goes bust.

When did that ever happen? It was already milked pretty hard ever since the first game came out. Yeah, they skipped 2008 after 2007, but then they fully went into 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012...

Ironically, 7th gen was kinda already like this with the handheld and mobile games. The only period in which AC wasn't (relatively) milked hard was from 2016 to 2023, but now Ubisoft is looking to come back with this.

This company is beyond salvageable. It's really sad, not even ten years ago they were honestly one of the better AAA publishers. But man, it went to shit real quick.

So the idea is to completely saturate your own market to such an extreme that it becomes salted earth?

What is this strategy called?

The way the release them now is related to the cod cycle, why is 6 less months any different? I say let them pluck away at historical events, there’s multiple events.

While this is absolutely stupid of them to do, clarifying that it's a mix of different types of games is important imo. These upcoming titles include free-to-play spinoffs, mobile titles and even remakes. The only big new titles that we know of are Shadows, Hexe and a game most likely centered around the age of discovery. It's not like we'll be getting a Shadows like game every 6 months.

But yeah, this is still very much going to contribute to fatigue. It's like they completely forgot about their past. AC was a yearly franchise from 2009 to 2015 and people were constantly asking them to stop it because they became tired of it. Repeating this is not going to land, especially because Ubisoft is, rightfully so, a much more hated company than back then. People today have different expectations believe it or not, which is why the gameplay of both Shadows and Outlaws didn't win anyone over. The controversies that surrounds those games is just the cherry on top.

But I guess erasing 10 years of growth in like 2 seconds would send any company in panic mode, at that point you want to play it safe. Ubisoft has a legion of developers at their helm, so throwing all of them on AC and Far Cry will result in more titles being produced.

I just looked at Wikipedia and yeah, my memory was definitely off.

They really threw away all their other franchises to the side to milk this one franchise.

Please don't. The quality is just going to plummet. It already has. It has more or less been downhill since Black Flag with maybe a slight return to form with Origins.

Make me Ubisoft CEO and I promise you, I can get that down to weekly releases. You will make so much money, you won't know what to do with it.

Mean while at Playstation Studios......

I'm not saying it's a good thing, but this is just for one IP and Sony can't even do this with multiple IP's
Both are ridiculous
