You can use the Analog Stick, it isn't that bad on PS5 anyway.
But using the D-Pad help you understand how the game is designed and won't let you overdo any moments, if you're your okay with it then use them.
It a lot better then the old Analog Controls on the PSX

Nah, the stick feels bad. If you turn the sensitivity down, you turn slower whilst running, but your stationary spin speed doesn't adjust. It just feels all wrong.

Dpad is a good sub for a keyboard, but it's just so noisy on the Xbox.

Stay strong people, find stuff the old fashioned way and explore! It's a very rewarding game when you stumble across that switch you've been searching for.

No there's definitely a problem because the game isn't that dark.
need to know what platform it's on and what's causing it because as you can see from mine and others screenshots, it's actually a bright game and the darkness never goes to the point of crushed blacks

I admit I abused Photo Mode to find keys I was missing in Palace Midas and The Cistern. But I legit could not see the keys on the floor. I love the remastered visuals, but some of they redone keys they made are too small and can easily blend into the environment.

That was it though. The rest of TR1 I was able to do legit.

Based on the pictures posted ITT, I'm not too fond of the augmented draw distance. The Colosseum felt so large, mysterious and ominous because stuff in the distance was hidden in the dark. Same for those giant rooms with the sphynxes.

I'm not going as far as saying that it's like removing the fog in Silent Hill, but in those very large rooms it kinda spoils the atmosphere.
The skylight in Tomb of Qualopec is out of place, too. It really takes away the feeling of being in an underground death trap, with a million tons of rock above your head.

Overall this still looks great, though. I'm definitely getting the game at one point.

I was playing with remaster graphics until the coliseum. It's just not the same without the darkness wrapping you. You lose the sense of scale indeed. I know it was a software/hardware limitation at the time but it was also a happy accident that elevated the isolation.

TR1 had them. I wish this game did it the other way around. Save crystals 1st, then unlock save anywhere..

Half the challenge was finding the crystals to begin with.

Need some "Modern Controls" advice. So in the original "Tank Controls", there is this perfect way to line up running jumps from the edge of a platform: you walk to the edge, press down and Lara hops backwards the exact distance for "run to jump", then you press up then hold the jump button and she will run then perfectly long jump from the edge of that platform.

Is there any way to do this with the Modern Controls scheme? Because when you press down with those, Lara just faces back towards the camera. I guess the question is "Is there any way to do the 'hop backwards' movement in Modern Controls so that you can line up the perfect long jump from an edge?"

EDIT: Found an answer to my question: basically there is no direct way to do this, but there are a few indirect ways to work around it. This video explains a couple work arounds, and one of the comments has another work around. They really need to patch in a button mapping for this when in Modern Controls.

Ideal is original graphics with 60 FPS mode, PC version draw distance (it was fine as it was, levels art design suited the then tech limitations that added draw distance constraints), 2-4x higher texture resolution but with point sampling and mip-mapping (to minimise surface aliasing), and maybe also graphics supersampled down from 6K to 4K Native.

I found another graphical error, in the Damocles key room in St. Francis' Folly the shadows of the falling swords aren't visible, mostly in the new graphics mode but they also flicker out and are only visible in certain distances/angles in the retro graphics as well, just a bit more visible than in the new graphics. Their rotation when you're ready to go out is the only thing indicating something's different without having to look up so folks dying from this will be miffed as there was no sound or anything else to show them they sprang a trap mechanism when taking the key from the next room (and it doesn't help that the first sword actually goes right through the wall to get you rather than being safe up until you peek out from that part of the ceiling, but that's how that was in the original, though they could have changed it here).

This is a remaster/port of the original 3 TR games from the 90s. Great games let down by Crystal Dynamics being butt hurt that the originals are better than anything they could produce.

I did enjoy the Legend Trilogy quite a bit, and when it comes to the Survivor Trilogy, I felt TR2013 was a very good start that just didn't get properly followed up on. However when it comes to atmosphere, ambience, platforming, music, and challenge, I do think TR I-IV remains unmatched.

I've been a huge TR fan all my life, so at this point I'm just hoping the next game is good. But if I had a magic wand and could give Tomb Raider to any developer out there, I'd give it to FromSoftware. Playing Dark Souls and Elden Ring made me realize that FromSoftware are masters of the craft when it comes to level design, artistic style, exploration, and action, and I think they would absolutely CRUSH a Tomb Raider game.

Played this for a couple of hours last night. I had TR1 as a kid and while I enjoyed it, I never got super into it, and I think it was because of the technical limitations at the time. It was just an ugly, fairly clunky game. But the level and gameplay design really shine here with the updated graphics and 60 FPS. Modern gaming is just so much more user-friendly than it used to be, especially when comparing PS1 games to modern releases. I find most non-RPG/Resident Evil PS1 games to be completely unplayable now.

Everything nowadays is basically on autopilot and it's refreshing to go back to these games and actually needing to grab ledges, etc...and knowing if you miss, there wasn't a checkpoint right before that jump.

I really missed that feeling on exploration games.

That was entirely by design too. Everything is grid based. You will make almost every jump that seems impossible, but they make it just far enough that you think you may not reach it. Fantastic design.

Also the controls just feel amazing in the original. A tad slow, sure, but even the very first secret felt better than the most challenging moments in the modern games. Back flip onto a sliding ledge, jump, grab ledge, and pull yourself up. Or you can jump behind the slope, slide, jump, grab the ledge, and pull yourself up. Simple, but feels more entertaining/rewarding as it requires basic timing and doesn't show a big yellow icon/ledge. You have to actively look for it.

what's weird is that it was this issue, rather than any concerns about political correctness, that i remember some people getting upset about when the games first released: lara killing endangered species. i gotta admit, it even felt a little off to me (tho it never stopped me from loving the games)...

TR4 & 5 Remaster package would be cool. But personally, I'm not a fan of TR4 for a number of reasons. Lara also looked like ass in those games.

And the jumps gives you the suspense right up until she grabs that ledge or don't and you like "oh shit, fuck I didn't save!!'

Nice bit, I was just in that part too. I like using these kinds of jumps in normal traversal too, to climb up places faster without the hanging on and climbing animations, just hop up. Was the other part with the pressure plates opening the gates with levers inside and what not always so strict in the timing, it took me several tries to just barely get in the last one. I guess already this early in the game you have to master the rules of the controls/gameplay to get by (or maybe the 60fps somehow messed up the timing of that stuff?). On to Palace (of? missing typo since the 90s?) Midas.

This! The Sega Saturn version has distortion effects when Lara's under water but the camera is above. It looks actually amazing and was never transported to any other version.

I'm pretty sure the original PC release also has water distortion similar to this (also absent in this remaster), at least in one of the 3D accelerated versions, unless that was a modification by the folks who made the modern Tomb Raider patches (not Open Lara, that has different shader based water).

You can see it here and in other random playthrough videos though it's not easy to know which exact version folks are playing I guess, but it's clearly not Open Lara or console versions and it's an old school effect rather than something modern. DF retro's Tomb Raider episode sucks about this stuff.

Edit: wops, that is using an older version of TR1X (renamed Tomb1Main) so I guess we know what version and that's indeed a reimplementation of the engine in open source format so I guess it has things the original didn't (like the braid) but I l read the changes and it doesn't mention distortions...

Beat TR1 yesterday, and right now I've made it to Tibet in TR2. Goddamn I loved these games. It's such a shame they would never make anything like this today. No yellow paint, no quest markers, no protagonist that's talking out loud and giving the player directions, none of that modern day shite. So this was obviously a design choice based on lighting & shadow logic.
But as I say its not even that bad in game.

Currently in Egypt, the remaster is everything I hoped it would be. To echo what I said in the other thread, they simply do not make games like this anymore and the more I play it the more I feel like it's a miracle it was ever made at all. This is a game uncompromising in it's vision and one that literally lives up to it's title. No hand-holding, no objective marker, no explanation of what key is needed for what door, explore, use your brain and figure it all out on your own.

I could wax poetic about this game's soundtrack for days, I think we can all agree the main theme of TR1 is one of the most iconic songs of all time. The word that always immediately springs to mind for me is "wistful", it gives me a sense of longing for things long lost, it's also infused with rays of nostalgia and promises of mystery, absolutely perfect. Every single song hits though and fits whatever the player is seeing on screen to a tee, it really is something special.

I'm so happy this exists, it's been quite a trip down memory lane and I still have so much to look forward to. I haven't played these games since their original release, it's amazing how much is still crystal clear in my memory but also how much I barely remember at all, I'm surprised and delighted all over again. We all universally agree that St. Francis Folly is a masterpiece in level design but I'd forgotten just how brilliant The Cistern was too, I've been playing with a near permanent smile on my face, it's so good.
