Toonami is BACK

Early Toonami had a late night block called "Midnight Run" that was an early relative of Adult Swim. It had a weekday afternoon block that was replaced by Miguzi in 2004, and it ran on Saturday evenings before Adult Swim after that.

Midnight Run was basically the Gundam movies for a while.
Ah, memories.

Was Samurai Champloo on toonami back then? Don't know where I watched it, but I did.

Think I might have saw some DBZ. Was Toonami a late night thing, or a mid-afternoon thing?

Champloo was on Adult Swim Action block (The thing Toonami is replacing). Toonami mostly ran 5 days a week in the mid-aftertoon/prime time slot for 2-3 hours (depending on the year as it expanded to 3 hours one year). It eventually got consolidated as one long action slot on Saturday nights (Muguzi the younger audience action programming took over.. was horrible ><) right before Adult Swim but do to the Cartoon Networks Management at the time (Separate from Adult Swim these days) they killed off almost all Anime on the channel and canceled toonami as a consequence. Any and all anime action licenses went to Adult Swims action block after that.

Best response.

Samurai Champoloo and Cowboy Bebop were on Adult Swim.

Toonami was both. I believe they were originally an afternoon block, then they added a block on Saturday night for more mature stuff.

Eventually, Adult Swim took their Saturday night block, and the afternoon show turned even more kid friendly, ending with that piece of crap Tom 4.0.

What pissed me off most about TOM 4 was that they didn't explain it.

Can't speak for anyone else, but despite the little amount we have seen of it, I like the Toonami universe.

Even though I've seen them both so many times, I really just want to see Funi dubbed DBZ and Yu Yu Hakusho again with the bumps!

A new series of CG shorts with plenty of Steve Blum would be one of the best things about a Toonami revival.

Such great news.
I had a blast staying up all night on GAF and Toonami a month and a half ago.

I can't wait to see what they have in store for us.

Yeah still remember the various toonami events they would have every other year that focused on some large rebranding campaign for the Toonami block, usually for the better. Part of made Toonami such a good block was the stuff they did when the actual shows weren't running; the promotions, game reviews, music video and various experimental stuff (The night of music videos was awesome during the midnight run times of Toonami before Adult Swim took over). It just had its own image that made you get pumped up for the shows like no other, plus the commercials for upcoming shows that got you excited for what was coming. A lot of that is going to be hard to replicate but if they just keep a similar style to Toonami 3.0 I might just tune in for nostalgia even if the shows themselves are just Bleach and FMA. The presentation was where it was all at.

Thisthisthisthisthis. Especially if they get some high action anime to pull clips from. Soul Eater/TTGL/One Piece... Let's fucking go.

Toonami wasn’t all about anime though, it was about action packed cartoons in general. What American, or any other country for that matter, cartoons could they air alongside the anime?

I am really happy. Not for me, because I don't watch TV anymore, but for the children of today that will now get to experience the awesomeness of Toonami that people my age did.

Honestly, besides TOM, there's not much Toonami has to offer now.

I'm guessing they'll place Black Dynamite in there.

Bring me Panty and Stocking or Deadman Wonderland and I'm in.
(Will not happen but a man can dream)

OH MY GOD!!!

I've been keeping up with this since April 1st, following all the little signs that this would happen. I knew about the blank schedule on the 26th, but never though it would actually be coming back so soon! This feels so fucking good right now! Thank you Adult Swim, thank you!

I never understood why they couldn't just air hugely popular shows like Naruto and Bleach with subs the same week it airs in Japan. They already do online simulcasts, and hordes of people torrent it every week. I bet they would get way bigger numbers if they kept current instead of waiting for a dub.

meh

Everything they air I'd most likely already seen. Great news for those without the internet tho. Ill change my tune if they make some new stuff tho.

I wonder if they'll air DBZ or Kai?

Having no Dragon Ball would be ballsy.

Nick has Kai locked up nice and tight. No way CN's getting it, unfortunately. Might be the single biggest programming blunder they've made in the last five years.

I loved Toonami so much. So many nights without sleep. Tom 1 and 2 were great. Tom 3 was so-so. Thankfully, I have absolutely no memory of Tom 4! Envy me!
