Portrayals of nudity and sexuality aren't automatically gross. It's when it crosses into the gross, obsessive, voyeuristic, otaku-bait, completely-out-of-context territory that is prevalent in an alarming quantity of media coming from Japan these days that it becomes disgusting. Why do the costumes for the main female characters just barely cover their private parts? Because they're pandering to the smarmy, basement-dwelling otaku who'll buy their ridiculously-overpriced Blu-rays, that's why. It doesn't help that all of these characters are children in virtual stripper outfits. The animation, from what I saw, was pretty cool. It's a shame that they have to finance it by including imagery that could be considered child pornography if it were live action.

Telephones require an infrastructure, which obviously doesn't exist outside the walls. Carrier pigeons need to be trained to travel to locations, they can't find new ones on their own (in terms of communication).

You said that there might be some advanced civilization on an island. They wouldn't have invented cell phones? Or been smart enough to figure out a way to communicate with humans on land? I just find this all hard to believe but then again, it's just an anime..
