I often wonder this myself, there seemed to have been a period in time where CN was so reluctant to have anime on their channel anymore that disney picked up shippuden, which is MORE mature than OG naruto.

That is often how ensemble casts in shonen end up. Side Characters are often more likable than the main..mostly because we see less of them and thus don't get tired of their shit.
