I do like how the 99 anime handled certain things. The tone was a lot more somber and the mood a bit darker from the very start. Even Mito's reaction to Ging was a lot more negative in its depiction in the 99 version which felt a lot more weighty and added some real gravitas to things from the start.

It also kinda cut down on a good bit of the exposition, so....

To go into more detail about how the 1999 anime ended, it had the Phantom Troupe fake their deaths as seen here, then in the post credits scene, it's revealed that the bodies are fake.

The arc was concluded in a series of OVAs. Funnily, the OP for it includes a section where Kurapika is happily running with the others until he realizes the Troupe aren't actually dead, which he isn't given an opportunity to do in the actual course of the story. Here's the OP, but NOTE that though there aren't any major spoilers, it does indicate which Troupe members get focus in the rest of the arc.
