It's just as much Black Star not knowing how to work as a team. basically Maka and Death the Kid need to accommodate for his lack of team work is what Stein was thinking in his monologue before the madness and maka's thing.

It's not a personality thing, it's a power thing. Maka simply is not as strong as Kid or Black Star, he won't lower his soul resonance to her level, and maybe Maka can't get up to his level.
