The Psychology of Akira did nothing for me. No matter how developed Tetsuo's inferiority complex is, or how much Kei's transition from 3rd person Killing to First Person effects her, I have a hard time taking it as much more than different-style Kakkarot VS not-as-cool Vegita , lol. Oh, and with a REALLY cool bike.

Akira as a whole could have been made into a Vignette in Robot Carnival, and I think I'd get the same impact from it. I might have even enjoyed Megazone 23 more...

Well, Megazone 23 is the superior bike-centric animated production, so that's no surprise.
I think the other characters are interesting enough to flesh out the movie, but if they're a non-factor in your eyes, that's fair.

On a side note, I had to use a considerable amount of restraint to avoid fixating on K9999/fighting game jokes, so seeing your pics was a bit cathartic. We had the same idea!

Last night was a trip. I always wanted to see the movie on Toonami when I was younger, but I thought it would never actually happen. Seeing it on the block was just perfect, it was a fantastic fit.

I'm still shocked to see just how much they got away with. It was pretty much uncut, save for a tiny small edits.

Yeah I'll be surprised if the ratings aren't good. It was trending all night and (anecdotally) we had quite a few new people here on ToonamiGAF so I can imagine new people tuned in last night around America.

No its just I was so messed up last night I can only remember a few things. The ending pissed me off because I couldn't understand stand it and went to bed haha.

That's because Perfect Blue is a fantastic movie. It's also the most recent of all those movies.

Perfect Blue racked up all kinds of awards a couple of years ago when it was renamed "Black Swan" too.

It's definitely flawed. A lot of characters and plot points remain entirely undeveloped (Tetsuo's girlfriend is perhaps the worst offender); the adaptation simply doesn't do a very good job of keeping only what is necessary. The ending is also terrible as it basically just has the children summon up a way to abruptly and unsatisfyingly end the story. I'm hesitant to call it deus ex machina, but it's pretty damn close. Read the manga if any of this bothered you as much as it bothered me.

My problem with both the movie and the manga is that Kaneda and Tetsuo's relationship is not portrayed particularly well; Tetsuo flies off the handle almost immediately. You never get the chance to feel for him as a character or even get the impression that there was much of a relationship between the two. This should be a tragedy about the bitter end of a friendship, but instead it just comes off as Kaneda stopping this kid who stepped out of line. I don't remember what happened in the manga, but the way the movie tried to shove in their backstory at the very end doesn't work.

Now with all that being said, the plot is quite engrossing and the lavish, detailed animation is probably some of the best we'll ever see on the block unless they eventually get Redline. This is what makes me give it a 4/5; it's that impressive. Everything, particularly the action and destruction, is incredible to look at. Even with the problems it has condensing the story, the film is still great fun to watch. It's a classic for a reason.

*MegaRespect23* I generally like Side-characters (more than mains...), but here, I kept feeling like "Ok, they're THERE, and they did their jobs." But other than Kaori's tragic fate, I don't care so much about the rest. I think maybe it's the fact that the overall style is just a bit plain on main of the characters. When Kei and Kaneda were in Orange Prison Janitorial suits together, save for the times they closed up on Kei's rather well-drawn face, they could have been the same character, lol.

I guess that makes them feel like fodder to me, more than characters I'm concerned with. Even Tetsuo himself isn't much to look at before his transformation. And maybe I should be happy that 15 year olds actually LOOKED like 15 year olds in this movie, as opposed to the general anime "age is just a suggestion" feel most over-developed young'ns give.

And my mind is always on fighters, lol, glad to have fulfilled that thought for ya! ;) I'm glad I got to see how nuanced a ripoff K9999 is once again, even deeper than I remembered, lol.

It really is; I'm not one for Psycho-thrillers generally, but Perfect Blue really made me appreciate the genre, and the creeping destruction of Mima's grasp to reality was handled pretty masterfully.

I saw a review on Akira that tried to sell it as a masterful Psychological drama, and just had to think "NOPE!" Though the Milk-bleeding Horror-Bears were pretty creepy.

I agree with all of this, but dat animation let me forgive it's silly story.

Pfft part of the reason y'all are hating on the story is that as anime fans you've now seen what Akira did a thousand times.

This movie was groundbreaking story wise back in the day. To say nothing of the animation which still holds up.

Hell the only traditional hand drawn thing I put over Akira (and even then they had a bit of computer aid) is 08th MS Team which at times is just mind blowingly crazy looking.

To me it makes sense. Lot of people are gonna be super busy in the last week of December with family and stuff. Doubt many would take the time out of their vacation to watch a late night movie. You keep the best movies at the beginning of the month to get as many people watching.

Yep you start with the best and run the lesser draws at the end. Only thing I might have switched is Badlands and based much better than Milos Shamballa.

well, i still like the story. it's just incredibly obvious that it's not a great adaptation with how it chooses to condense that story, whether you've read the manga or not.

i dunno. i would've put Trigun over Summer Wars based on that. but maybe they want to close out strong.

Akira was clearly the biggest draw, fma 03 movie will probably do the worse due to brotherhood only watchers or manga only readers being completely lost. Summer wars is probably the biggest wild card I really have no idea how well that could do.

Finally watched last weeks Toonami. Adorable Medusa, bloomers, Suguha's booty, and FLCL... I missed quite a week.

Akira is gonna have to wait. Too late to start it if I want to enjoy it.

Yeah, it's hard to say how Summer Wars will do. Maybe some people will be all "Woah, that looks like that Digimon movie, I should check it out!" like some users last night. I don't know how much it would have helped if they mentioned it was by the same director of "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" since it probably isn't a house-hold name for anime fans, despite the positive reception. Honestly, I want it to do well because it IS an enjoyable film and to continue gaining viewers for Toonami.

Also, what about Trigun: Badland Rumble? Think that might bring in a decent amount of people, mainly the "Trigun should return" requesters?

It was a good movie. Most anime I've seen recently pisses me off. This didn't piss me off. I liked it. The plot was fine -- it's an action movie plot. Rarely do you get Lord of the Rings out of action movie plots. And honestly, I prefer when movies leave a few loose ends and undeveloped threads rather than telling a painfully simplistic story. Animation was tremendous, obviously. Thought the music was ok. VAs were good. A++ would watch again.

Only fault I really had with it were the exposition scenes with the military dude and the doctor. Nobody cares!

Still can't believe Kaneda's VA is that of Ichigo. Such a difference. He's actually a pretty good voice actor and can do emotions pretty darn well, yet he's stuck with boring old Ichigo.

"people bitching" still enjoyed the movie for its action and animation, and excusing the plot for "well it's an action movie" really doesn't fly when the movie was clearly aiming for something beyond that. trying to use that as an excuse is probably more insulting to the film than anything i or anyone else actually said.

Had good range as Vash the Stampede though. Bleach is pretty bad, I wouldn't use it as a measuring stick for VAs.
