Why does the gate exist? Why do Ed and Al exist? The same reason the gate's power of alchemy only flows in one direction. That's the universe of the show.

it's a gate. you can go in a gate and out of a gate. if they're going to go to the trouble of explaining equivalent exchange and all that, why are they allowed to stop halfway because it's a work of fiction? why doesn't it work both ways? "because fiction" is laughably terrible reasoning used to dismiss criticism because you can't actually think of a way to defend it. if the show actually makes an effort to explain this and seem grounded in some kind of reasonably plausible scenario, it doesn't get to just quit and chalk it up to not being real. that is incredibly lazy.

again, everything you mentioned is explained within the show except why the gate is there, which i have covered. homunculi exist because they're made from failed human transmutation and then raised by Dante. "why do Ed and Al exist" is a horrible comparison. "this device does not make sense" is not the same as "why do these characters exist?" even remotely.

Mustang is basically comic relief in the 03 series.

At the time the 03 series ends, the manga was at Mustang vs. Lust, so he hadn't really done much yet. All of his scheming with Grumman and Briggs, etc, hadn't happened yet.
