I agree, but having caught up on the manga recently I have a new level of appreciation for how they pick things apart and who exactly makes which specific statements along the way. It works out.

They know there is a traitor in the midst, and they know that humans can shift into titans. Plus they've seen the armored and colossal titans have intelligence, it was a safe bet to make the person might have been a titan shifter
