You put pressure on the producers and consumers of anime to let them know it's not acceptable in this day and age. It's not that simple, obviously, but it's definitely not acceptable the way most anime treats women characters.

It's getting better, mostly from outside pressures and change in the industry.

Honestly, it hasn't. There's still a ton of creepy anime, and good series still get fanservicized.

I honestly don't think anything will change until the anime industry collapses. It's essentially a niche self-contained market in Japan, they can ignore a lot of outside pressure.

I mean the main incentive for change will be more Western influence (mostly money) though again "animators like lewd stuff" isn't really a Japanese exclusive concept. If the concept of "what deserves to be animated" were broader in the West, you'd 1000% see more fanservicey shows from our shores (though thankfully they wouldn't touch underage shit). Occasional boob jiggle doesn't really rise to the level of "unacceptable in 2017!" or "disrespects all women" so I'm not sure a moral argument will be effective and the worst stuff is in products that are designed to be basically porn.

Since you can't eliminate it (nor should) and the concept of anime is broad enough that's its often easy to avoid super fanservicey stuff I'm not sure there is anything to do besides standard artistic critique (just speak up as usual). Just encourage and support the good titles that don't have much of the stuff.

I wouldn't call any particular arc good, but there are plenty of good moments here and there. Really good individual episodes surrounded by lots of dumb shit and filler. The finale itself is pretty well done in the anime, but it's a slog to get to it (not that I think Toonami will air Shippuden that long anyways)

Plus he wanted to have the broadest appeal. If he named the villains as Rock Ninjas then the Hidden Rock wouldn't read the book and get his peace message. The characters are whoever the readers want them to be.
