It's rare that I like male vocalists, they either have little ability or waste their technical ability by adopting silly singing quirks of their genre. But then I might be a tough critic since I'm a singer myself. Anyway from semi-popular people the only truly good male singers I can think of right off the bat are Shane Barnard and Derek Webb, oh and that guy from Keane.

Goddamn! Who in their right mind would name Usher and R-Kelly as the top 5 vocalists of the past 15 years?

Usher has a good range and a lot of power in his voice. Plus, his vocal arrangements are nice. You have listend to his albums, right? Not just what you hear on the radio.

Man, when Beck tries, he's amazing. He has the more soul and funk than any white boy should.:p Such a well rounded artist.

I have to add Dave Grohl because he hasn't been mentioned. :D
If you guys ever hear him do Baba O'Reilly with Nirvana, he's only second to Daltrey.

Cedric of ATDI/Mars Volta has a really unique voice. Plus he can really sing, too. Most people with his tone are typical semi-whiny indie rock singers, but not Cedric.

Chris Cornell is god damn overrated. He's good but not the legend people make him out to be. Couldn't sing a really fast song to save his life.
Listen to Jesus Christ Pose or Full On Kevin's Mom. He might not sing fast to match the music, but it doesn't matter. He still owns.

Wait, ATDI and The Mars Volta....that's the same singer???

Usher and R.Kelly have a freakin ton of talent, and a ton of range. There are not too many people out there that can sing like they do. Whether you like their music or not. Talent is talent.

Days like these...

Doubtful many of you have ever heard of these guys but here goes my list for what it's worth

1. Stevie Wonder
2. Arnold Jarvis
3. Robert Owens
4. Peven Everett
5. Sean Escoffery

You must be a young man. Listen to some Otis Redding, Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Temptations, The OJays.....LIVE, then go listen to Usher and R-Kelly....LIVE, and tell me what you think.
You'll never convince me that they're (Usher/Kelly)top notch vocalists because i listen to a different brand of music than you do. I'm in no way a music snob, but after being raised on music that meant more than being an on 'stage personality' with tons of flash but little substance, i've become a bit jaded....

I agree, his voice is amazing, although i liked him better when he sang with ATDI....

I heard The Mars Volta first and liked the voice. I knew At The Drive In was the predecessor, so I got one of their cds, the most recent. I couldn't stand the voice. I can't believe it's the same guy. Maybe I'll give ATDI more of a chance. I'll give the CD another listen right now.

5.Bruce Dickenson (Iron Maiden, Bruce Dickenson - does anything really need to be said about him? I mean...he's Bruce Dickenson)

So true. Dickinson pretty much fused an Opera style into metal, it's what made Iron Maiden so goddamn good!

I saw Tomahawk open for Tool during the Lateralus tour and they were nearly booed off stage. Worst act I have ever seen. The frontman mentioned something about how he enjoys being booed. I hope it wasn't the same band you're talking about.

Same band. I've seen Tomahawk and Fantomas open for Tool, and I really hated them. However, I gave it a second try and found out I really liked them. Tomahawk is Mike Patton's worst project since it's the most typical rock one though I still find some of their songs damn good. (check out North 101, God Hates a Coward, and Mayday) Fantomas just went over my head when I first saw them. It was my first time being exposed to such a different form of music.

ATDI is more noisy, unrefined, chaotic...TMV is more conventional. actually i preffer TMV as well.

I LOVE (!!) Tomahawk. FNM just edges it out as my favourite Mikey project simply because they have more material out.

Who I think are the better vocalists of the latter 15 years?!

Maynard James Keenan
Chino Moreno
Mike Patton

Eminem

goddamit, Griese!

OMG DIABLOS IS BACK =O

I count myself lucky to have seen Alice in Chains on the Facelift tour - they supported Megadeth at the Edinburgh Playhouse.

I've seen many, many bands over the years (including Soungarden, Faith No More) but no one even comes close to Layne Stayley that night. WOW.

Love Hate Love that night was a thing of such awesomeness I can't even begin to describe how amazing it was.

Sadly missed.

The next best performance after that was probably Chino Moreno from Deftones - somebosy mentioned doin stuff live - Chino is far better live than on record.

Nowhere near Layne though. What a voice.

Sorry, but this has to be said.

Pumpkins are a great band, but a good singer Billy Corgan is not. *Especially* live.
Depends on the performance and song. Even I can't stand to hear him belt out "Blank Page" during their 2000 Universal Amphitheatre performance from LA. Its really, really, really bad. But sometimes, his voice is fine. No one said Corgan is a great singer, but the interesting thing is that they had a lot of success in the early/mid 90's despite the fact that he isn't the greatest singer in the world.

His voice is... different. He mostly hits the right notes and everything, it's just really nasal and whiny. I think the nasal part is what turns so many people off, because I couldn't even begin to list all the rock bands that have lead singers with whiny voices.

William Hung set a whole new standard, on the other hand. :p

That's cool and I *love* the vocals on Gish, but I was challenging on how anyone could possibly say Billy is in the top 5 vocalists of the last 15 years - it's unfathomable.

Someone mentioned Bono in this thread...

Have to agree - he may be a pompous, self righteous prick, but if it wasn't for him, there wouldn't be a Thom Yorke, or a Chris Martin...

Well, the vocals on Gish were kinda layered to create a very unnatural sound. It was almost like a metallic sound (no, I didn't make a typo and mean Metallica. :p) MCIS on the other hand is raw. One of my favorite SP bootlegs, 1996/04/07, features (as usual) very whiny vocals from Corgan, but it sounds more like he did in MCIS - a hybrid of punk rock rage and semi-soft singing... not this super nasal effect that a lot of people couldn't stand, myself included sometimes, that evolved afterwards. All of SP's performances from the mid 90's and before (and even a lot of the Adore tour) has some form of acceptable vocals IMO. One of the things I liked most about SP is the fact that no matter how bad the vocals were, it didn't matter because the songs were so good. Sometimes vocals don't matter, and to me, SP was one of those rare instances. A lot of people forgot about that and now judge every alternative rock singer like they are in some watered down version of American Idol. It pisses me off. It's alternative rock. Not opera!
