What is Torchlight?

Torchlight is an isometric ARPG in the tradition of Diablo and Sacred. The gameplay revolves around rapidly clicking on wicked monsters with your mouse and hoping that they have a nice pair of pants secreted about their person when they die.

Torchlight II is more of the same, but bigger.

Returning Features
  • OFFLINE PLAY!
  • Pets make a welcome return for those of us who get scared when we’re slaying the demon hordes on our lonesome. This time around they aren’t limited to selling, but can even head to the shops for you and buy items you need. If you’re going to send them back to town to sell your junk though, just make sure you always get receipts.
  • Tired of the fate of the world resting on your little shoulders? Why not cast a line into a nearby pond and see what you fish up? Fishing is back, for people who enjoy that sort of thing. Weirdos.
  • Mods are supported right out of the box, with the game shipping with TorchEd.

New Features
  • Cooperative play is here! You can now play Torchlight with up to 6 players in a single game. Don’t worry about annoying restrictions, Runic have even stated that the player limit is removable with mods. Players can freely trade, and if both flag up can indulge in a bit of ultraviolence against one another.
  • Character customisation is also a welcome new addition. Aside from anything else it means that people who only roll girls in RPGs aren’t stuck with a single class this time around.
  • Torchlight II no longer takes place in a single gigantic dungeon which inexplicably keeps going deeper. Instead the game features a large open overworld which is randomised at the beginning of a new game. This overworld has a functioning day/night cycle and is littered with random events and dungeons for players to sink their axes into.

Classes

engineer.png

Engineer: A melee fighter who wears heavy clockwork powered armour that collects energy charges during combat, which can then be used by the player to destroy things and get more energy. Also builds robots, presumably using clockwork. So they’re not really robots.

outlander.png

Outlander: A ranged specialist with some minor low magic skills, the outlander focuses on a high degree of mobility couple with hitting things very hard. However, they can also support a party using their debuffs and summoning abilities.

berserker.png

Berserker: A melee damage powerhouse, berserkers use their fists and any blunt instrument available to pummel the hordes into submission. They do have a softer side, and are avid practitioners of shadow-animal husbandry.

embermage.png

Embermage: The wizard class. Hopefully not as broken this time.

Multiplayer FAQ

What kinds of multiplayer options does Torchlight 2 support?
The game can be played in co-op mode over a LAN or internet connection. Currently there is a cap of 6 players to a game.

Is there PvP combat?
Yes! Bring up the chat prompt and type /pvp to flag yourself as being ready for PvP and you can fight with your friends.

How does loot work in co-op mode?
Every player will see his or her own items drop when a mob dies, so there's no need to worry about ninjas.

How does XP/fame work in co-op?
Experience points and fame are shared during co-operative play.

Where is my character stored?
All characters are stored offline, meaning that you can play the same character in singleplayer as you do online with your friends.

I have no friends. Is there a matchmaking service?
Sort of, it's more of a traditional server-browser than a game-finder. In order to use the service you'll need to create an account at http://secure.runicgames.com/ and login to the account when you start the game.

I do have friends (on Steam). Is there a way to find them easily?
Absolutely. Just register an account as above, then click the button about activating Torchlight 2 for internet play. There should be an option to link with your Steam ID, follow the instructions and any friends with the game who have created a Runic Games account will be able to be imported to your in-game friend list.

None of my friends are showing up, what's the deal?
Linking takes 10 - 15 minutes, so be patient. If nobody shows up after that time make sure that the friends you're expecting to see in the list have created their Runic Games account and linked it with their Steam ID.

I consider myself a hardcore gamer with a gigantic e-peen. What measures are Runic taking to ensure that other people can't edit their saves and get better loot than me?
None. If that's a serious problem for you then this game isn't for you.

There are currently issues linking your Runic Games and Steam accounts for online play. Until these are resolved, people have been using Hamachi:

I've been playing remote with my family in FL using this

Bought a 4 pack the other day, can't wait for next weekend. Steam username is rj119 if anyone wants to join in for co-op

Should have used the Diablo 3 error OT title.

If I can't duel wield swords in this game, I will be disappointed.

just on this note, I really didn't want to troll diablo 3 in the thread title. it would lead to too much unpleasantness. that being said, I did enjoy putting offline play in as a feature.

It's tempting since I did enjoy the first game, but with Borderlands 2 coming out I don't think I'll have any time for Torchlight 2. Then again, I could always play this solo during the times my group doesn't get together to play BL2.... Hmmm...

Doesn't seem like this game is going to have an end-game economy or anything because of mods and all that. Really wish it had some sort of end game setup.

I am probably going to get booed out of this thread but the last time I played it I didn't enjoy it. Don't get me wrong, I loved the default super fast speed, and the interesting and well done loot, but I can't get behind potion spamming anymore, or auras, minions and buffs that last 3-4 seconds when fights are 10 minutes of kiting in circles. Didn't like the UI either.

I'll keep an eye out for these and more issues to be fixed by mods and probably get the game at a discount way in the future. I enjoyed Torchlight 1 for a good 40-50 hrs and I hope this game and Runic the best.

Yea I agree about the short term buffs in Torchlight. It brought back bad memories of Ferine Avatar spam and paladin blessing spam.

its been so long since torchlight 1... and after D3... I do hope combat 'feels' as good. Like I wanna feel like I 'hit someone' and not activate the dice roll.

Yeah - closed servers would really make this game into a good contender. Sadly I'll probably just end up playing through it once and be done with it; Hopefully I can play with people who aren't hacking day 1 the best items in the game but I don't think that'll be the case.

shhh Graham I'm still compiling this Radiant map
Nice OP, jim-jam. Can't believe it's almost out now.

Will probably start out with Outlander.

I saw this randomly today when I was on Steam. Apparently if you pre-order it you get Torchlight 1 to play as well? Looks pretty cool, I like the art style.

One of the things I greatly preferred about Torchlight (and the Torchlight II beta) was the actual feeling that you were getting stronger.

My biggest problem with Diablo and a ton of Diablo clones is, you never ever feel like you're getting stronger. Even if you meticulously build the best character using guides, it's still never satisfying.

Yet in Torchlight, even on the hardest difficulties, a little bit of grinding and looting and you instantly feel a ton stronger. I love it.

Shame that it's coming out so close to BL2 as that'll steal my attention for the launch period, but afterwards I'll be into this. Liked what I tried of the Engineer in the beta, so I'm gonna roll with that.

unfortunately not, they completely overhauled the UI for the XBLA version of the first game and decided it was too much work for TL2.

This is why I am greatly hoping there is a mod for controller support eventually. There wasn't for the first one, which was greatly disappointing considering the XBLA version controlled so much better as a result.

You can be my co-op bro anytime.

As for the lack of endgame, it's not game breaking obviously, there will be some great mods out there for sure. The problem is, I'd like to be able to run through the campaign and still have something to do at the end. Not sure if you can beat one difficulty and then go to a new one. If so that'll be nice.
