It happend that i'll be interviewing Nadeo guys tomorrow, so if you have any interesting questions, feel free to share'em with me. Be sure I'll add them on my list.
Maybe they already talked about it and I didn't see it, but I'd like to know if the user created content is going to be as open as United. I'm talking about custom icons, re-textures, custom soundtracks, etc. There were a lot of copyright infringement stuff in United and I'd like to know if they are allowing that in TM2.

Yeah, that's a great question, have been intending to ask them for myself.

Looks amazing in the 1080p video.
Gorgeous IQ and framerate.

For some reason I had to loop it first till it was fully buffered to properly play it, fucking hard drive dying on me I guess.

vvv : everything you want to know is in the trackmania 2 thread.
Nations and united were a lot of fun, nothing generic about trackmania.

So I'm gonna be a heretic and go ahead and ask it...what's the big deal with this game? From what I remember it was just a generic arcade racer when I played Trackmania on my PC. Am I wrong?

I can't even comprehend how someone can call Trackmania generic. There's nothing out there like it customisation and fun wise in an arcade racer

Gamersyde videos are insane. Does anyone know system reqs for T2? Me haz:
phenomII x4 3.2ghz, radeon 6870
Enough for smooth 1080p/60fps????

It became modding phenomenon. Users are creating INSANE tracks, and really lot of people are playing it now.

Yeah, even the first Trackmania was so far from generic. It's not "arcade," either, but that's another battle!

That video is very impressive. I've not played the series, how viable is just having a gamepad? It looks very precise in that video, but I've seen some wacky stuff from the first one, I gather it's quite an arcadey experience, I wouldn't be missing out not having a wheel I gather?

3/4 guys in the TM WCG09 final used gamepads. Obviously it is very viable.

I own Trackmania on the PC, but I've hardly played much of it yet.

I actually used to own Trackmania for the DS (the first, kinda iffy version) and I played a lot of that. The quick races and puzzle-y levels made it perfect for a handheld. The version I had was a bit buggy and didn't control as well as the PC, but I still had a lot of fun.

Since I've barely touched TM1 on the PC I'll probably hold off on getting TM2 for a little while (coming to Steam would help twist my arm!). I would instantly get it if they made a Vita version that allowed for track building and sharing. Oh, who am I kidding, I'd get it for the Vita no matter what. :D

What do you guys prefer, keyboard or a controller?
Keyboard. Whenever I use my 360 controller, I feel a delay with my inputs. Not sure what it is but it's always been there.

I have to admit I'm a little bummed that it isn't available for pre-order on steam, but honestly it looks like a ton of fun so I'll likely just pre-order it from their site.

The videos sold me on the idea of Trackmania. I decided to download the free version to try it out, and I'm getting 60fps with high settings in solo mode, and 30fps in multiplayer. Do you guys set graphics to minimum in multiplayer since performance should always win out in a competitive environment? The game seems overwhelming at first.

You might try triple buffering, if you have vsync turned on. Vsync will result in a 30 fps lock if you're getting say, 50 fps instead of 60 fps.

Yeah, I'm not really convinced he understands the meaning of generic.

Edit: Gorgeous videos, as usual, blim.
I'm not really sure how you can extrapolate a lack of understanding of such a basic word from what I said. I basically asked why you guys liked this game, but instead I get insulted with no explanation as to why you like it at all.

You got insulted? You didn't call Trackmania generic without any reasoning? All people said is that it was anything but generic...I don't see any insults...

You said Trackmania is generic. The only explanation is you don't know what the word means.

Controller, I steer using the DPad, I havent experienced the lag people have mentioned. DPad works excellent for me. Hate the keyboard hehe

Noone insulted you, its just TM is as far from a generic racer as you can get. Even the games playmodes (time trials with timed duration) are just as far from generic as possible, Ive never played another racer with that kind of multiplayer vs design.

Well it definitely wasn't a huge insult or anything. Whatever. I should have just asked why people liked it. Instead I'll just get responses like the one below...

I'm not insulting you. The reason you got the responses you got is because you said something untrue.

If you want to know why people like the game, it's because it's a very arcadey racing game with great controls, fantastic online play and crack-like addictive qualities.

I'm sorry if you feel insulted, but that was a really big misuse of the word. Trackmania is a pretty unique experience in the racing genre.

Someone already summed it up, but people like Trackmania because of its tight controls, unique tracks, and the heavy focus and integration of leaderboards. It is also the definition of an easy to learn/hard to master game. There's not really any secret techniques that the fastest people use or hidden information that new players might not figure out. It's a very pure, approachable, challenging game and it's one that players of all skill levels can easily find some way to comfortably challenge themselves. It's also very easy to learn how to improve via the replays on the leaderboards.

Furthermore, the track editor guarantees an almost limitless supply of tracks.

In summary: Great controls, great features, great customization, huge emphasis on community and sharing. And obviously, the tracks themselves contain plenty of interesting elements that you don't really see in pretty much any other modern racing game.

Damn, what kind of computer is needed to run those gamersyde 1080p@60fps videos? I have decent PC, and still no luck.

[phenom ii quad 3.2ghz, radeon 6870, kmplayer, vlc, mpchc]

Using WMP with a Q9400 @3.3Ghz and a 460 GTX, neither even breaks a sweat running it at 60fps. Something is definitely off.

Yeah I downloaded the wmv files and WMP plays them flawlessly but VLC would stutter and stop. I had the same problem with the BF3 60 fps footage.

Any announcement on a Euro price (I imagine its going to be €25) and availability?

VLC won't use hardware accelerated codecs installed on your windows PC (since it's the main point of VLC to use its own codecs), so especially for WMV files it's going to stutter a lot more than WMP. Personally I use MPCHC, ffdshow + the awesome LAV Cuvid decoder http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=160290, so I basically get the best of both worlds.

Weird... When trying to play the "Time Attack 1" video from Gamersyde (WMV format), it stuttered like crazy on Zune. Using Windows Media Player, it was smooth, but the sound was desychronized. =(

Might only get it tomorrow. Not sure if I want to stay awake until it opens ... btw where will we buying this from? I mean url buddys?

nvm.

So I guess using a wheel is out of the question for this game? I looked through the TM2 forum and from the few posts I could find about controller support - it looks like there was no centering force / FFB for wheels - only rumble and much delay from analog steering.

if any GAF'ers get the BETA that have a wheel - please post results!

I'm sure someone will beat me to it but I'll give it a go with a G25 tomorrow evening. Can't imagine doing well with a wheel in this game though and using a wheel with a third person/behind the car view feels so weird. In my opinion trackmania is perfect with a 360 pad.

Trackmania would be difficult with a wheel...a keyboard would be much easier, in fact.

And yeah, a 360 controller works very well in Trackmania. My only complaint is that I feel the deadzone is a bit high...maybe that's fixable with the custom drivers though.

Yeah, I didn't think about the 3rd person view being the only option, that would make using a wheel a quite a challenge - LOL!

Guess I will just have to settle for using a pad on this one!
