Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter - Switch 2 version announced, demo available now, opening movie released

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

The Switch 2 version of Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter will be a digital-only release worldwide, with "no plans" to release a physical edition. It will offer a higher resolution and frame rate, as well as faster load times compared to the Switch version. Users who purchase the Switch version in either physical or digital format will be able to upgrade to the Switch 2 version by purchasing the "Upgrade Pack" for $1.00 / 150 yen. To play the Switch 2 version, you must purchase the Switch version and the "Upgrade Pack."

I'm not even mad it's an upgrade from the Switch 1 physical version. Better that than a game-key, imo

PC port is honestly much better than I expected. The pre-rendered cut scenes are 30fps  and capped at 16:9, but the rest of the game supports 21:9 (nothing above, unfortunately) and an uncapped frame rate that you can cap in the settings. Looked great on my monitor at 144fps at 21:9.

Voices are a little jarring, since I recently played through the originals with the Japanese "Evo" voices modded in, but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

Now to decide if I want to get this for PC or Switch, that $1 upgrade working with the physical cart has me excited.

That's a pretty good approach. It allows folks to get physical Switch version on the cart and then get a very cheap upgrade.

I will grab a Steam demo and try it out over the weekend. I really like TitS FC and SC, so hopefully the remake will be good. It's a shame that SC remake is years away if it even happens.

Transferred over to the Steam Deck to give it a shot there. Game plays nice and looks decent enough for the screen size, but struggles to keep 60fps. I capped it at 40fps and it feels pretty good like that. I'm curious how the Switch 2 version will look / play.

The demo progress carries over to the full game btw

Played some of the demo.
Looks like this is the first time they've added a 120fps mode to a console version too. Drops resolution and makes jaggies more obvious but seems to run fine.

I don't think there's a need to swap from the 60fps mode, personally, but for those that do, there's the option now at least.

Shadow quality is kinda shit regardless of either mode, tho.

Schera's intro is just a shot of her boobs. Nice.

Oh, pretty cool.
I've been waiting for this. I'd love to play it on the Switch 2, but I'm really worried about the performance.

Is the demo available on the Switch 2 at the moment?
I can't check right now.

Shit now I don't know which version to get.

I assume ps5 I could get 4k 60fps, and switch 2 is stuck with like 1080p 60fps?

Modern Square Enix could never

Really looking forward to this one. Going to down load the demo at lunch.

Also kinda like the upgrade path... buy physical on switch 1 small fee to bump to switch 2 version.

Played an hour or so and loved it. Going back to cold steel combat after two daybreak games felt surprisingly refreshing. Not playing anymore, I will save it for the full release.

jshackles jshackles RPGSite did 2 features on the quality of the various versions of the game (incl performance on ROG Ally and Steam Deck), can you add them to the OP?

That's what I wanted to know. I put a bunch of hours into the original on Steam, but stopped cause this was coming. Level cap or do they not give you a lot to grind, especially in those beginning hours.

Is it even worth playing the original with this round the corner?
Yes, the original (FC) is a charming game and still worth playing. Additionally you will be able to play the sequel (SC) immediately instead of having to wait for the remake.

The original games can be found for cheap too, FC costs around 5 euro on CDKeys for example.

After playing the demo a little…….

This my first experience with Falcom game and it's pretty good, I like how expressive characters are in cutscenes.

Does the save transfer in full game like Octopath? If not I don't think I should play the demo any further if I'm already sold on the game.

Yes, the only thing that might happen is that you wont get any of the trophies that you would have playing the full version.
If that's the case then I should just wait for the full version.

I'm already very sold on the game. I heard Falcom games are not very high budget but to me this game looks gorgeous and very good character animation and it runs silky smooth.

Anyone saying to play this over the original has to ask if that person plans to play the other games after this because man there are some baffling name changes in this gungho translation that directly clash with the established english terminology of the last 20 years of trails games.

Just a few snippets like the lovers couple in Rolent Armand and Ellie got their names changed to Areum and Aria so now people who play this and then encounter Armand and Ellie during the little sidequest in Azure dont even get the little callback.
Other little things like Esmelas Tower is now Jade Tower and so on, i dont know i hope the full release is a little more consistent with established terminology for the sake of consistency with the rest of the series.

I haven't tried it yet because I'll just wait for the full version but most of their games are pretty low budget. This one seems like the highest budget game they've done so far. The good thing for them is the each arc revolves around a certain country and has you revisiting these places throughout the games so they have the option of reusing a ton of assets.

Wow, I'm surprised you've never played a Trails game! You would definitely love this series. It's basically JRPG heaven 😅
I always wanted get in to it but it just too many games, I admire the fact it's continues story but it hard to know where to start. It basically how some people feel trying jump to One Piece.

Whoever told you that was dead wrong. Honestly, they're the best in the business.
