Transformers: Devastation |OT| Rising in Disguise

As far as licenses go... and Platinum making deals with Activision, I secretly want a Wolverine game from Platinum. Call Witchtime "Feral time!" and go crazy with the SNIKT.

Nice! Thanks for posting this stuff.

No problem. Trying to intergrate it into the combat system is a bit hard though since the hitstun and juggle potential of enemies isn't anywhere near as easy as other Platinum games.

This game needs some enemy variety in the worst way. I know the source material is limited in side characters for decepticons, but fighting the same few grunts and a whole level of insecticons over and over starts to get a bit old

Yeah. The blue enemies are the best to combo on but they always have a shield. Taking off the shield takes off half of their health.

Also, is there a reason why I can't stream this on Xbox One? It's officially launch day here in the EU and I can't broadcast directly from the Twitch app. I've tried other games and they work.

This is game is brilliant, combat feels really good. My only gripe is I wish block/transforming weren't on the same button, other than that it's awesome. Thanks Platinum

^I felt so too at first HOWEVER, even if you do a dodge that has you transform pressing Attack will have you hit your prior target, you just gotta acustom yourself to remember that vehicle and robot form 'are the same'.

Just beat it today. The sequel tease was just too much.

Sad to see that Devastator & Menasor "exploded" though. A Defensor/Superion vs Devastator/Menasor HAS to happen if they ever put out a follow-up

Ah don't worry
they're about as alive and well as Shockwave or Soundwave would ever be :P

Talking about Activision, they need to release X-Men Origins Wolverine on Steam...

Wolverine game developed by Platinum? Perfect formula!

I would like to see some dlc for Transformers Devastation, maybe some other characters, (all Dinobots for example)

Oh man, I keep thinking about this game at work. Been taking my sweet time on Commander mode using unupgraded weapons, it's been a great challenge (difficult, but the right kind of difficulty where I can overcome the obstacles with perseverance. I'm still in stage 2, but somehow have 8 hrs clocked on Steam. I'm pretty sure I didn't leave it running without playing for that long!

The more I play this, the more I find the loot system superfluous and tacky. Utterly inelegant implementation even when you ignore it lacking crucial UI elements to allow well-arranged gear management - never mind it missing immediate information in places - and I hate how it forces you to interrupt actual gameplay with pointless busybody work thanks to the relatively low inventory cap. It just doesn't really have a place in a traditional action game of this style and I'd much rather have seen something far more streamlined; earn standard weapon archetypes through normal progress as well as making them available for purchase afterwards to retain the current mix-and-matching, and instead collect the elemental / statistical components if you want your axe for example to possess specific attributes. Would heavily cut down on the menu bloat if instead you had "ice gem x 5 / fire gem x 7 / level 3 Focus enhancement x 2 / etc." in your inventory and the simplicity would make the ordeal far less cumbersome and time-consuming.

For me personally, it also ironically lowers Devastation's replay value since finicky activities like that are a major pet peeve. Which is a shame because I'm really enjoying the game on a mechanical level, more than I anticipated.

There is a sequel tease (I think?) in the ending for this.

They show some Transformer waking up like it's a big deal or something. I how have no idea who the fuck he is lmao since I'm not into the series.
He's that corrupted Nova Prime fellow who was mentioned and shown in a cutscene earlier in the campaign. The owner of the PStar or something.

The way I do it is, to just focus on 1 character and beat the higher difficulties using them while giving them the best weapons, then once I have more weapons with equal strength to the best weapon I can equip that on the other characters and max them out.

It's got that Musou-like attribute to it :P

Boy, Commander doesn't kid around. That Sideswipe vs Megatron fight was pretty tough. I guess the extra skills and weapons you get right after will even the odds for the rest of the game, but that was fun!

Uh, why are the vehicle sections God-awful and no-one seems to mind?

The combat system is good and I definitely appreciate it the more I do the challenges, but every time the game forces me on one of those chase missions... Ugh. And the level design? Typical Platinum games - not particularly great or interesting as it's composed of tight corridor followed by battle arena ad nauseum. The city and all other environments are by far the least interesting characters in the game.

The game is decent but I certainly preferred the High Moon ones so far. It probably helped that they weren't made on a shoe-string budget though.

If you have a good ranged weapon they're less irritating, but sometimes it's a little fun to just roam around the city area in vehicle mode once you've cleared much of the combat.

Oh man I didn't even think about the X-Men license in the "what IP should Activision put them on next" discussion. Wolverine with gore and zandatsu = greatest game of all time

I'd love to try the Uncaged version of that Wolverine game, obviously it's not Platinum tier but it looks really cool

Uh, why are the vehicle sections God-awful and no-one seems to mind?
If you don't want to do a chase mission, kill the enemy and don't let them get away. There's at least one hidden trophy for doing so

Beat the story campaign in Commander difficulty. The remixed match ups in the final chapter were pretty cool, and I liked the fact that the fight with Megatron was a clean one on one fight without bullshit, while the stage before it was filled with all out brawls with 5 autobots against a bunch of Decepticons. What I think was a bit of a waste was how underwhelming the final battle with Megatron in space was. He had some pretty cool moves like the spike hammer, but overall it was just too easy and it felt like more of a whimper than a slam dunk. To make it worse, the ending teases Superion, Defensor, Ultra Prime vs Nova Prime in a possible sequel. While I'm glad there's at least a chance they might be planning a sequel, I hate teases like that because it reeks of "Hey you know what would be REALLY cool? Haha it's not in this game!" :(

I loved the game though, and I would gladly buy another one for 50 bucks. Or a substantial DLC expansion for 20 bucks. The Challenge Missions which unlocked after beating the game look awesome too. Clone Autobots? Shockwave AND Soundwave at the same time? Shockwave AND Megatron? Sign me the fuck up!

Currently, the only disappointments I have over the game are:
- Underwhelming final battle.
- Motormaster is the only individual Stunticon enemy in the game.
- The stat/level and loot system feels like it unbalances the game substantially, and there's no good way to "revert" to have battles at optimal difficulty. Systems like this aren't Platinum's forte, and I think it would have been better if characters and weapons didn't have levels and ranks attached to them, just different weapons with fixed damage output.

Sort of feel as though this game is having its issues overlooked purely because of nostalgia/platinum love.

I mean, the combat system is very good and, even being awful at the game, I can see why people love it. But everything around that? The terrible driving, the loot system, the poor level design etc. really bring it down for me.

I guess I was hoping that I'd enjoy it as much as the High Moon games and, while I like the idea of G1 Transformers more, I'm just not feeling it. Then again, I've never been a huge fan of Platinum outside of Vanquish (and sort of MGS: Rising) so that certainly plays a factor.

Those things you have issues with don't really mean dick to me if the combat mechanics are actually fun.

I love the game but I can see where people are coming from when they mention it has a couple of issues. It does feel a tad rushed in places, like after the first fight with Devestator when Megatron calls him elsewhere - it just jumps straight into the next scene, Devestator just "disappears".

But God damn, the nostalgia "feels" this game is giving me. I'm not even out of Chapter 1 and I just can't stop smiling.

I didn't get mine either. Contacted support and the person seemed pretty clueless. Said they will forward to their promotions team to look into it.

Basically ordered from Amazon over using GCU just for the code so that sucks...

Best buy didn't give me a code either. So it sounds like activision didn't actually send codes out.

The 2 things I liked final boss fight
were that you fought in space and that final attack on Megatron. The QTE was funny

Mechanically satisfying combat between charismatic and lively cell shaded G1 Transformers to great music goes a long, long way. Would I prefer a more fleshed out and varied game wrapped around the core we got here? Sure. In a perfect world it would've gotten a longer dev cycle with a bigger budget, but facing the realities of this Activision/Platinum partnership, this is a fine product and I'm willing to overlook some things because of how well the game does what it does best.

I didn't like the "final" boss just because
it was a weaker version of what you just played

Initial confrontation with Megatron on the beach though is hype as fuck. I will say the QTE kind of pissed me off because I didn't think there were any in the game, then I finally beat Megatron and oh shit I need to mash oh god no *fails, restarts entire fight*

I totally agree with you. The final fight is fine in theory, but they really needed to make it much harder and have an extra layer of complexity to it. It just didn't feel that satisfying beating the fight, which is odd because most of the fights in the entire game were extremely satisfying.

I think it says a lot about the game where the level design is mediocre but people still love it. The fact that it looks like I'm controlling a G1 cartoon AND I get to beat the shit out of Decepticons goes a LONG way. When you couple that with the fact that the combat is pretty god damned good, it becomes pretty forgivable. We know this game was probably rushed and it certainly didn't have much of a budget so the fact that despite the factors working against it we got a fucking awesome game is something to be excited about.

This was definitely a game designed by people who love G1. We have the original voice cast for the most part recieting lines from the cartoon no less, the characters look and feel great, combat is great, and that last qte at the end...

This is a love letter to G1 and sort of a proof of concept. I REALLY hope it does well because if Platinum was given a larger budget just imagine what we could have next time around. Could you imagine playing with Superion? Or playing metroplex and beating the fuck out of Trypticon? Calling in Omega Supreme as a special attack?

They should make it so
its just for the player to get bonus Credits. it's 2015, game over via QTEs needs to be non-exisitent.

I got a grenade launcher weapon that seems to break the game. It stuns everyone for a good five seconds or more. Everyone. It can even affect multiple enemies at once.

Still haven't received my preorder bonus from Amazon. Emailed them and got a reply saying they were escalating my case to their "concerned team" and I can expect a reply in 5-6 days... really weird for Amazon. On the rare occasion I've had a preorder bonus issue with them, they've usually sent the code in their initial reply. Wonder if they were shortchanged on codes or something; did anyone here get their code from Amazon?

Didn't get one from amazon either, slowly winding my way through e-mail support.

Only one more day for me to get this, theoretically.

This is my biggest concern with the game right now, I'm seeing way too many reports of overpowered weapons, especially firearms. Do they stay overpowered throughout the higher difficulties as well?

This is my one real complaint about the game. It would have been way better if they didn't have loot, and simply had each autobot have their own two melee weapons and guns. So for example Prime would have the Axe moveset, Hammer moveset, and two of the gun types, Bumblebee would have Fists and whatever else, etc.

They threw in rpg type systems arbitrarily where they weren't needed and it just makes the game more cumbersome and awkward than fun.

Yeah Platinum has a real issue balancing difficulty, on both extremes. MGR is super guilty of this too. You can easily cheese that game on the hardest difficulty, but the challenges are an unbelievable pain in the neck.

Only one more day for me to get this, theoretically.

Playing on Commander now, so yea.

Just woke up and checked my email; Amazon came through with a code! Hopefully that means others will get theirs soon too.

Better raise the shields and man the battle stations, cause it's Red Alert time, baby!

I want a Platinum Star Wars game so fucking bad.

Imagine, Force Unleashed but good

Was talking with a buddy about this yesterday. It would be awesome if Platinum took its delicious signature gameplay and applied it to every licensed action property imaginable. Star Wars, The Guyver, Thundercats, Getter Robo, Gotrek and Felix. Everything

As the other poster who thought Platinum should remake Transformers The Movie said...

*Dreams*

Been playing some of the challenge missions on Commander and man, the encounters are much more intense. Started getting quite a bit of A rank equipment. looking forward to unlocking the higher difficulties.

Minor gameplay spoiler

anyone else really enjoy the turret sections? The patterns are great and feels mildly similar to Space Harrier's.

Since it exists solely for story I would've honestly totally been fine if they just made it a QTE fest instead of an actual fight

Yep, I felt the same way. Nothing incredible but for those sort of sections they're decent enough and don't overstay their welcome. I haven't messed with the challenge mission versions yet so maybe those will break me but we'll see

Soundtrack (like many other things) was outsourced. Some company I'm unfamiliar with.

I know some tracks DiCola did but the credits have Satoshi Igarashi (who has worked on a few other Platinum titles) listed as composer. I'd be really interested in finding out who worked on which tracks.

Actually had a good time with those, as well. Never thought I'd say I want more turret missions in a game, yet here I am.

Dear fans,

I've been waiting a long time to make this announcement, but Activision was so slow in granting permission that the game just came out and we STILL haven't receive permission to post anything on our social media sites! I think you'll be excited to know that Kenny and I contributed to the score of Activision's new Transformers game. We were hired late in the production process so we're not the only score composers, but the music we contributed (including a new vocal theme song!) came out sounding fantastic! Sorry I don't have a link to offer right at this moment but I'm sure the game is easy to find. Hope you enjoy!

V.

If I had to guess I would say the title screen, ending, and some of the boss intro music is Vince and Kenny, while the majority of the gameplay music is by Platinum.

Excellent, thanks for the quick reply.

So, when can I put money down for the soundtrack?

If Activision are being so tardy with regards to giving permission for contributors to even talk about their involvement in the game, I wonder if they'll even bother selling extra stuff like soundtracks or whatever. :(

So what's you're saying is, we need to mobilize on Twitter and make some noise?

Transformer fans, roll out!
