Transformers |OT| Transform and roll out...

Any place I can buy a toy of Bulkhead or has that ship sailed?

Secondary market only. There were two Bulkheads in the TFP line, an earlier First Edition one and a later Voyager in the main TFP line.

dsc00306.jpg

TFP Voyager on the left, First Edition on the right.

The First Edition one is infinitely superior to the TFP Voyager. It'll run you more money but if you're a fan of Bulkhead, I highly recommend tracking down the First Edition version. There is not a single thing about the TFP Voyager that is better than the First Edition one. The First Edition is without question the definitive Bulkhead toy.

PS: I want to get into the IDW comics. Any tips?

I recommend just jumping in at the James Roberts era. I just re-read the entire IDW line and it really is amazing how the quality leaps skyward as soon as he shows up.

I suggest this as a "prologue" read order.

Prologue
Last Stand of the Wreckers - Vital backstory to a major MTMTE plot reveal
The Transformers Ongoing (2009-2011) #22 & #23 - Vital backstory to another MTMTE plot reveal plus the first story to start laying down Roberts' version of how and why the Great War started
Drift Miniseries #1-4 - Backstory on Drift and the Crystal City which becomes relevant later; note this is the adjectiveless Drift series, not the Empire of Stone series

From here you can jump into MTMTE Vol. 1, which starts off with the Death of Optimus Prime one-shot. All you need to know in terms of what happened between what you read in TF #22 and #23 is that a huge stupid fight happened on Cybertron, Optimus Prime was killed in the process using the Matrix to save everyone (it's what he does, after all), and the Great War ended with the Autobots the victors. Now they have to figure out how to live without war after fighting for millions of years.

Season 1
MTMTE Vol. 1
Spotlight: Hoist
Spotlight: Trailcutter
MTMTE Vol. 2
MTMTE Vol. 3
MTMTE Vol. 4
MTMTE Vol. 5
RID Vol. 1
RID Vol. 2
RID Vol. 3
RID Vol. 4
RID Vol. 5

From there it goes into Dark Cybertron, which is not great but it changes a lot and leads you into MTMTE Vol. 6. From there...

Season 2
Dark Cybertron Vol. 1
Dark Cybertron Vol. 2
Transformers: Punishment
Windblade Miniseries
MTMTE Vol. 6
RID Vol. 6
MTMTE Vol. 7
Combiner Wars: First Strike
Combiner Wars (RID Vol. 7)
MTMTE Vol. 8
Drift: Empire of Stone Miniseries
Transformers Vol. 8 (note: at this point RID changes its name to just Transformers)
Transformers: Distant Stars
Sins of the Wreckers Miniseries
MTMTE Vol. 9
Transformers Vol. 9
Transformers Holiday Special
MTMTE Vol. 10

I'm not caught up beyond that, when it gets into all the Revolution stuff, but that should give you plenty to read before you have to worry about that.

Just finished Sins of the Wreckers. I don't know, didn't really resonate with me. Was also disappointed that
it did mention what was hidden under Aequitas. Wonder when that reveal will happen

Also, Make Toy's Not-Computron is on sale for $250 at BBTS. Kinda tempting. How big is it in comparison to MMC's Feral Rex?

Pretty small, although some would argue that Predaking should be bigger than your average combiner anyway. I'm not a fan of Quantron overall, but that's a damn good price.

What didn't you like about him? I thought he had good reception. He's also the only Autobot combiner I like. Though until recently the Autobots only ever had three, right? Man the 'cons sure outnumbered them in that.

And yeah, the few times he appeared Predaking was shown to be larger than any other combiner.

Edit: Also noticed that Maketoys's Not-Scorpinok and Not-Metrotitan are $325 at captured prey. And that TFC's Not-Superion is $350 at BBTS.

Like Giant, which I believe was done by the same designer, several of Quantron's component robots are super annoying to transform, basically doing the "explode out into pieces hanging off a metal crossbar" thing where you have to fit them back together again. I think the giant bow is stupid looking, I don't like the weird backpack thing he has going on, and overall he's pretty dinky next to the other third party combiners I have. On top of that, while I'm not a huge stickler for G1 accuracy in my non-MP toys, he seems more "inspired by" Computron than an honest stab at making Computron. Too busy, too many weird pieces hanging off him that don't need to be there.

This is probably not helped by the fact that I don't much care for Computron or the Technobots to begin with (they were the last G1 combiner I tracked down, mainly due for completion's sake), but while Quantron is overall a quality product on par with what Maketoys usually puts out, I just find him to be both underwhelming and overdesigned. If I were in the market for a third party Computron, I would go with Warbotron's offering.

Yeah, both he and Green Giant are by the same company. And one of the reasons I like him is actually the deviation from the G1 design. I'm not a big fan of offerings that stick too much to the originals, though there are limits like Make Toy's Not-Scorponok. It helps that I'm not personally attached to any of them other than Devastator.
Other than him, the only other combiners I'm interested in are a Devastator (need to do more research on this), Unique Toy's Ordin (though I'm not a fan of how it seems like the shoulders just have animals sticking to them instead of really changing) and TFC's Hades (but the cheap looking combined head holds me back)

I keep almost pulling trigged on TFC Hades..... not sure so expensive but I like what I see. It comes with all the parts to make the chain staff thingie?

I have four of the six Hades guys (last two on the way thanks to a Black Friday sale), and they're worth it all on their own. The combined mode is just gravy.

I actually really like Hypnos on his own (but not enough to buy him), and I don't have enough space to show them separately.
Also, I didn't realize how expensive it would be to buy them all. Even with this discount it would cost you $540 for the set.

Well I read the Windblade comics on sale on comixology right now. It did a good job bringing me up to speed for the most part even though I didn't really care about Combiner Wars in the slightest. The Windblade mini and the follow up afterwards involving Windblade traveling to other planets (including a Beast Wars planet!) Plus the art was super cute and expressive.

Windblade is supposed to be getting her own series soon right? Once I plow through MTMTE I'll start it. I think I might just skip over Robots in Disguise since I was pretty bored by the parts involved in Combiner Wars. Might just read it when I have to.

Other than that, watched a few episodes of Robots in Disguise. I like the cel shaded look but this one is definitely skewed towards a younger audience. I like how there's just the one kid and his dad instead of this huge gaggle of lame humans. The first few episodes are pretty meh but Prime had the same problems so I figure it'll get better by the end of the season.

If you have read Windblade now I guess there is even less point in going back to the RiD comic. It chronicles some events that are interesting for both MTMTE and Windblade, like
Starscream's ascension to power, what happened to Bumblebee, and Megatron's return and 180º
, but at this point it will make for quite boring read since those you already know the end result of, and they are mired in some pretty uninteresting writing. And whenever Ramondelli is drawing I want to claw my eyes out.

And yes, Windblade has an ongoing now, it's called "Till All Are One" and it's actually on its fifth issue or so, but you might want to wait to finish MTME (and especially Windblade vol 2 if you haven't, but I think you have, from your description) as a recent even crosses over both of them and it's right at the end of MTMTE and the start of TAAO.

I watched the first episode of the RiD cartoon and disliked it quite a bit. It seems to aim for an even younger audience than Prime, which I should finish watching some day. The fact that I also dislike the toys (while I liked and own a few of the Prime toys) doesn't really help. :D

I kinda just want a toy of Grimlock and Windblade, but my TRU has none.

Although what I really want is a toy of my favourite gay robot person Knock Out.

But yeah I finished the second volume of Windblade (Knock Out! Dinobot! Tigatron and Airazor!) and I really loved it so it's super exciting to hear that Windblade is continuing in her own series. Starscream as the legitimate, all powerful head of Cybertron is really cool and I love Rattrap, but the stuff written by the RiD scribe was a snoozefest and I hate the blocky art; I like it more when it's drawn like Windblade or Prime/Animated where the characters are all round and angular and have really expressive faces.

I suspect a Grimlock is coming up in either the second half of Titans Return or the next line after it. For Windblade you'll have to go back to the one from Generations a couple years ago and for Knock Out you'll have to go back to the TF Prime line. Unfortunately neither figure is particularly great.

The problem is that I'm enough of an obsessive to want a toy of the version I like (ie: if I get a toy of Windblade I'd need it to be of her comic incarnation and not from the cartoon), meanwhile I'd be down for a toy of RiD!Grimlock because he's big and dumb and silly and I love those characters.

Is Takara Grimlock a good toy? I've never bought a Transformer before.

Jeez this will be the first one I own since Beast Wars back in the 90s.

It seems reasonably easy to get a Windblade still, especially if you live in the US:

I wouldn't tarry, though. I personally love her, but I did mod her a bit to solve some of its flaws (extending her heels for stability, and adding some paint here and there).

A nice Grimlock you can still get for a pretty low price is the Fall of Cybertron one. I have the suspicion MTMTE's design may be partially based off it.

As I often said, I hate Ramondelli's art with a passion. It's so utterly lifeless. I really like Windblade's art, it's very manga and an interesting contrast with Alex Milne's art, which still remains the undisputed king for me.

Man, I've been dancing around buying Quantron for days now. The more I look at him the more I like him, but I'm still not sure.

I watched a review of Inferno, although I skipped around to not spoil the transformation. He looks totally awesome - so glad we're getting him and Grapple. Mine is paid for but will have to wait in my pile for some December releases.

Even if I didn't collect all the MPs, I'd get Inferno just for how that ladder works. Takara still has the magic when they want it.

Have the production models been improved? Know there was concern about the rear in truck form, as there was like no details at all, tail lights, etc, just red plastic truck butt.

Recent test shots in video previews just have the flat red back on the truck. Could use a bumper or some taillights but then again screen accuracy demands otherwise, so...

In other news, Machinima is doing two followups to their Combiner Wars series, titled Titan Wars and Power of the Primes. Pretty good odds we know the name of the toyline after Titan Wars now.

Godbomber?

http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Godbomber

Godbomber_toy.jpg

I actually own the original, a few years back Takara reissued God Ginrai in what must have been industrial amounts, and you could get it for ridiculously cheap (as in, the entire set, Super Ginrai + Godbomber for 30$). Its "combination" with Super Ginrai amounts to falling apart into a pile of pieces that you attach to Ginrai, and as a result he wins the award for most hollow Transformer ever (his arms are particularly sad), and is basically a brick (shoulder swivels and that's it). This version is much, much improved, basically a proper bot, and I particularly like that you can open the truck's front to seat three titan masters (and that it actually has windows instead of holes).

Didnt see it posted here and searching showed nothing but if you are interested in a Combiner Wars Menasor or Superion boxset check your local TJ Maxx or Marshall stores. They are selling them for $40 brand new

Picked up a set of each for my kids for Christmas.

Welp, that's the first trade of MTMTE.

It really is as good as everyone says. I felt immediately invested in every character, Tailgate and Swerve were the highlights for me, and I'm honestly shocked to say that for a comic about 30 year old robot toys. The art was clear and beautiful and most of all expressive, Chromedome feels really alive and he doesn't even have a face.

I'm uninterested in RiD but maybe I'll pick it up on the cheap some day if I need to. Between MTMTE and Windblade I think I'm happy. Optimus was always the most boring part of Transformers (except for Primal, natch), but Death was a really good one shot that set up the status quo, though I guess I'm supposed to know a lot more about this series going in than I did.

Just read Transformers: Chaos Theory (second half of the book is a James Roberts story) and Last Stand of the Wreckers. You're set form then onwards and it'll be smooth sailing.

Glad you're enjoying it mate :D

So about that new mobile tf game
Will Tarn be in this game and have the shun goku satsu where he dashes towards you, whispers in your ear, screen goes dark multieple explosions flash then he poses with megatron's face flashing on his back?

So, was the new MTMTE issue their way of saying Revolution won't effect the series much?

Also, I was kinda hoping
it was the real Thunderwing, but then it'd be too similar to Grimlock's current arc.

I think Roberts was making fun of the whole major crossover thing. Like that one Marvel one shot that made fun of its constant annual renumbering and relaunching of its comics.

Also, contrary to what you're seeing, I am unable to create new threads for a certain amount of time, so I'd really appreciate it if one of you fine folks could make a thread for this
The Guardian interviews James Roberts, author of hit Transformers comic

Some choice quotes
Michael Bay was in Oxfordshire recently to shoot The Last Knight, the final* instalment of the mighty Transformers franchise. The maker of the highest grossing movie of 2014 – Transformers: Age of Extinction, which took over $1bn – was up to his old tricks, stomping on British sensibilities by converting beautiful Blenheim Palace into a Nazi HQ.

But, in another wing of the franchise, the shape-changing robots have been venturing into much less likely territory, exploring such weighty issues as social mobility, personal identity and various corrosive ideologies – while also establishing the world of Transformers as a homonormative society.

*It's very likely more Bayformer movies are coming, so just read that as latest instead
Roberts has even dared to rehabilitate the classic Transformers bogeyman Megatron, going back to his early days and depicting him as a young radical. “Originally, Megatron was an incredible thinker who advocated non-violent resistance. He was in the Tony Benn mould, an international socialist. He campaigned for emancipation and equality, but eventually concluded the system had been engineered to withstand any form of dissent – other than force.

“As is the case with grand tragedies, he travelled away from the goals he had in the beginning and walked that well-trodden path from communism to totalitarianism.”

Better look at Voyager TLK Optimus:

I'm digging it a lot more than any of the Knight Optimus' from AoE's toyline; the eyes looks off to me though. Really looking forward to seeing the rest of these toys.
